I’m getting from time to time this same “SWR high” sometimes and I traced it to originate in the connection socket of a short cable at the back of my SWR meter box. This is a new cable and it’s contact is very “shaky”, the slightest tap I give it and the reception hiss flips on and off. The only stable position I’ve found is to have slightly/almost unscrewed, still in full contact. Could be the mechanical contact of a cable sometimes.
Hello, good video, difficult to diagnose, with out specific test equipment, well deduced mr Fred, but could you advise me on how to get a dx call sign,is there a website you recommend, anyhoo thanks success.
High John. There are a few callsign groups around. I ve stuck with Charlie Tango as they have a website and forum as well as a FB page. Check out the video link below. ua-cam.com/video/tIZoYRtd-RU/v-deo.html
I would Suspect Moisture getting into Antenna Coax Connections and causing High resistance or open circuit, Always best to totally seal the SO259 PL259 Connectors at the Antenna with Self Amalgamating tape this also stops corrosion of the connectors...Anyway good luck Fred and All the Very Best Wishes Hope you and yours have a great New Year.
This happened to my 99 antenna after it was up for about 7 years - SWR shot up, etc. I put a dummy load in place of antenna at the end of the feedline and SWR was great. I ended up putting a Maco 5/8's G.Plane in it's place, rather than another 99 though.
Hey Fred, that seems like a real puzzler. Just so you know, the antenna does have one or more electronic components that can short or fail. I suspect using higher than normal wattage could possibly cause these parts to fail but in your instance it just seems like everything went bad instantly. I look forward to part 2 where I am sure you'll figure it out
Good video Fred, problematic issues are changes in swr, I've recently fitted a RM 203 p and are struggling with swr spike on SSB at PEP, I'm tendi g to lean to it been a harmonics issue and am going to put a low pass filter in the line. Had any similar issues ?
@@CB-RADIO-UK what's your normal length for patch leads, you can't seem to get a definite answer, on the net that many differing views,I've been keeping all mine to 18in. Ive fitted a low pass filter in tonight initially it didn't make no difference, I'm not getting the high warning alarm on the DX10 now so that's a bonus.
@@CB-RADIO-UK cheers, I will keep that in mind, I've disabled the high swr alarm on the radio as I know it's not mega high, with the amp off it's about 1.5 average across the bands, a bit higher on mid block but high band and the Muppets its 1.5 and below. Only on pep does the swr alarm come on.Cheers for the comebacks 👍
An antron should show a short circuit at the plug Fred, so your fault lies in either the 213, more likely the plug at the aerial end or cable close to it due to fatigue over time. Antrons do fail with time, but usually still show the short on the bottom. Good luck Fred, I look forward to seeing it repaired. From Tim HT, from Nuneaton 👍
fredintheshed1 that’s good, it is also normal for the aerial to show open circuit between the socket on the bottom, and the brass ferel on the top of the bottom section, due to a capacitor in the radiator 👍 good stuff fred🙂 hope it’s sorted. From Tim Ht Nuneaton.
fredintheshed1 thank you very much for your reply, I also use mini 8, from my radio to antenna mounted on the outside of my building I had my first contact a few days back around 6 miles from me :) I am currently using a York 863 which I have had from brand new as not sure whether to invest in an ssb radio like the grant 2 or ss9900. 163CT210
Had a a99 some years back had a issue after 10 yrs of use there was a hairline crack at the base of the antenna water had managed to work it way in it had in fact oxidized my complete run of coax i would hedge my bets it a water issue Fred
Had same Problem yesterday, on mid day swr 1:1,4 and in evening (raining) swr 1:5, on my pl connection was water had posted about this cbstm.wordpress.com
Part 2 will be uploaded on Sat 12th Jan.

Get a wire up Fred, inverted v or something like that, easy to make, easier to fix.
Great video mate fully enjoyed it very helpful keep it up mate
Good vid Fred hope you get it sorted Pal 😎
good luck mate hope you get it sorted. happy new year
Cheers bud.
Keep on keeping on fred you'll crack it!!!..... if you don't ill i'll have to change my thumbs up....pressures on kid!!

Hi Fred I’ve got a vary hi swr on my 2016. How can I get it down plz
Check all your connections on the plugs for any shorting. Make sure the antenna is in free air not near solid objects.

A simple VOM meter says nothing about RF behaviour.

Cheers Andy. I do have it working at the moment but not convinced the A99 is not on its way out.

Only when i run a longer 1m patch lead.

I try to keep them as short as possible. Most are 50cm but 30cm is better.

Fully agree about antenna switches mate. I use Diawa switches £60 each and they are still crap. All the best mate.
Yes they are not great. Even the really expensive one's have issues.
you will fix it fred I have utmost confidence in you "fix it fred" has a nice ring to it ha ha
I'm thinking of making a wite jpole, been reading up on them today, saw a few UA-cam video too, seem like a good bit of kit.
Wire jpole not wite jpole lol
Would be helpful if you provided a link to part II where the problem is solved.
Had an issue with the video on Part2. You can see here the problems with SWR and the antron. ua-cam.com/video/apHvcpkQVVA/v-deo.html

Thanks Tim. Yes a couple of other people have commented on the open circuit with the meter.
Just checked it with a meter following a re-plug and now have a closed short circuit and the plug end.

Hi Fred not related to the video, just wondering what coax you use?
RG 213u from a switch box to the antenna and then Mini 8 to the radio.

Was it the coax at the feed point or another short of some kind?
I had a short on the antenna plug.
@@CB-RADIO-UK ok. I just had the same problem today while raining. I'm thinking it's my lightning arrestor getting wet.
water ingress in the coax by any chance ?
Yes i think that is the cause unless the antenna has a fault.

It could be Rob as there was oxide within the coax plug.
Have you experienced DC low warning on this or on the 6900
Yes ive had the DC LOW warning. Normally means your power supply is not putting out enough amps.
@@CB-RADIO-UK ah bugger just noticed it's only 5amp as used for bog standard Muppet radio years ago, can the ss6900 be turned down in power
@@CB-RADIO-UK only happens in FM and am tho
Good luck
Where is part two😀?
Cant rem if there was a part 2 but this was the cure ua-cam.com/video/qrB0-7T2fok/v-deo.html
I think I'm going to piss myself laughing on part 2 Fred I'm going to try to get the second hand antenna 99 for peanuts
LOL. Yes something not right with the old A99.
That lean in the antenna would suggest something has failed in the antron 99... Good luck mate.... You will find the problem.
Yes this was noted by Awesome Dave also. Cheers
Where is part 2 ?
I think that one got deleted.
Had same Problem yesterday, on mid day swr 1:1,4 and in evening (raining) swr 1:5, on my pl connection was water had posted about this cbstm.wordpress.com
Any plans to get your HAM ticket?
None at the moment. Its prob on the bucket list.
@@CB-RADIO-UK I would totally go for it at some point mate, it's nice to have access to any band you want.
My antron did that straight from the box. Knights sent a replacement base and problem solved
Awesome Daves failed after 5 hours. I dont think the build quality is as good as the early ones.
Fred do you know you’re onions from your unyuns?
Nope :-)
My radio swr 1.6. Is bad damage my radio.
No 1.6 is fine. Start worrying 2.5 and stop at 3.0
