Another tip to AVOID freezer burn...the rule I learned is cook, completely cool, and then freeze...any heat in the food while covered will cause condensation inside the dish which then turns to ice when frozen!
Melissa Mikaelsen I use the Food Saver Vacuum Sealer and have never ever had freezer burn. I completely cool my food (freeze casseroles in the dish I will cook it in and then remove it & slide it in the vacuum seal bag and seal it). I write reheating instructions & pan size on outside of vacuum sealed bag
This video answers SO many questions I had! I love all of the tips! I would love a video on what foods don't freeze well or to watch you make Instant Pot Freezer Meals. It still makes me nervous!
Thank you! I was totally planning on talking about what you can and can't freeze in the next few weeks! I think that is the second most asked question I get on freezer meals. :) Thanks for the Instant Pot freezer meals idea - I can totally do a video on that soon. Stay tuned and thanks again for the ideas!
I am so glad you did this video! I am a homeschooling mother of 6 children and am going to start freezer cooking to make things a lot easier for me. I literally took notes while watching this video and I just subscribed! Thank you for sharing!
Homeschool Royalty wonderful!!! Thanks for subscribing! I’m super impressed with anyone who can homeschool - it’s a lot of work but can be so wonderful I hear! And freezer meals sure can help save time - let me know if you have any questions! I’m here to help! 💕
Thanks for watching my freezer meals for beginners video on how to get started! Leave a comment below if you have any questions or other awesome tips to share.
Thank you, Kate! Super helpful. You're right, I've been kinda nervous about this are. I like the tip about lining the baking dish with plastic wrap for easy extraction later. Good one! Thanks again, I'll certainly be stopping back.
I have a family of 4...2 boys 14 &16..LOOOOOOOORD they can eat!!!! The reason i was looking into prepping dinner/meals because I get home too late and I'm tired. I eas cooking almost every day even if I got home late. IT STOPS NOW!!!🛑 I started looking for containers to use to ho from the freezer to the microwave...what was safe....what was durable...how long will the meals stay fresh..etc...So you now have a new subie 😁💝. I will be taking my journey thru your videos today to learn more. Thank you
Great video! I love following you on Pinterest and UA-cam. I have recently purchased your book and I really enjoy your intro with all your tips and supplies. I use your freezer meals with my meal planning. I am getting ready to post a video on freezer meals and I am going to provide a review on your book. Thanks for the tips!
I am a fan of Food Saver vacuum packaging or like. Another thing is to pull a vacuum on refrigerated foods that you use a lot of. I buy dry black beans, soybeans, lentils, peas, pressure cook them and then store them in mason jars that I pull a vacuum on AND pack them still while hot so to increase the shelf life. But for regular used items, you can pull a vacuum with your Food Saver on your foods you keep in jars with special "vacuum seal" universal lids and food will not spoil nearly as fast.
I appreciated all of the tips in this video; juggling as many things as I do I can see the value of making freezer meals ahead of time--it'll save so much time and not just money (BUT not to say that THAT isn't important, too, ROFL).
Great tips indeed! But what I have noticed is you are using so much one time usage plastic :(. Please try to avoid it or use re-usable meal boxes. We waist so much plastic these days. And also those folie baking plates.. You only use them once and then throw them away. It is not sustainable ❤ but other tips were great, thank you!
Thanks for the video! I have a few questions and would love if you answer them, listing them down below: 1. I'm also planning to cook & freeze meals for a month. Should I buy a dedicated deep freezer for it or my refrigerator's freezer compartment would suffice? I have heard that deep freezers (especially chest freezer with manual defrost) might be a better option, would love to hear your take on it? 2. I'm also concerned about potential food poisoning risks if food is kept for too long, or if compressors auto stop and food is melted/thawed a little bit during the day. I think refrigerators might do that instead of manual defrost deep freezers. Again, would appreciate your views on it. 3. Have you stored kneaded dough ever? I have heard that it goes bad really fast Thanks in advance, have so much more to ask but these are the top 3 questions!! Would appreciate a reply!
As far as freezer burn is concerned. I make meals and freeze them in light weight cheap throwaway containers lined with cling wrap and leave a little extra so you can lift it out of the container. Be sure the size of the freezer container will allow the frozen meal to get placed into the vacuum sealer bag. I usually buy the kind of bag that can be cut to the size you need, vac seal them up and return it to the freezer. As she said be sure and mark what the contents are and date them.
Great tips, Karrie! What is the best way to remove air from the packaging? Also, love your ideas about creating freezer meals for smaller families. Thank you! :)
Thanks Liz! So there are several methods to remove air from the packaging, and I'll have to do a separate video just on this (thanks for the idea!) For freezer bags - you can press the bags food while you seal, almost right to the top and then seal to get the most air out. Some people also just press the bag as much as possible, then seal. And then there is the straw method. Add a straw to one side of bag, Seal the bag all the way up tight next to the straw, then suck the air out, then quickly pull the straw and seal. It works great - almost like vacuum sealing. Which reminds me - you can use a vacuum sealer too! :) For baking dishes, I press the air out using plastic wrap on top first, then cover in foil. Hope that answers your questions!
I NEED THAT BOOK! Just a quick question, if you are freezing in quart jars, how much "head space" should you leave? I'm concerned about too much and getting the freezer burn issue or not enough and breaking the jar or something. Perhaps freezer bags are easier in the end LOL
Hi!! Great question! I like to leave about an inch of headspace, and to help keep freezer burn off you can freeze it until solid press a piece of plastic wrap down inside touching the frozen liquid, then add the lid. Honestly I love the freezer bags more, they thaw so much faster and I seem to always be in a hurry come dinner time. :)
anyone got any good recommendations of ways to do this sustainably... like what tubs are the best? just don't really want to be creating so much waste if i do this at uni.
I am quite sad that I just found your channel today and realized that you are no longer making videos. 😢 I did check on Amazon for your cookbook, so I guess I will have to settle for that.
ha ha ha ha .. you had me on tip #1... make meals you actually like! That is soooo funny! and so true! I think I have things in there that are still there! LOL oh dear... That was a great tip with the container too! Never thought of that! But.. I have now! LOL .... Great video! ~Elizabeth

Looking forward to more videos! I have the round containers for the IP cooking! Got a big Zaycon fresh order coming so am going to need to get my freezer organized!
I usually cook pasta 5-6 minutes, so its mostly cooked, but still hard kind of, then cool quickly and add to pasta bake dish to freeze. Then when it's baking it will not end up being super mushy!
I love the idea of freezer meal prepping but then I saw how much shit you used that would end up in a landfill and I was like...”nah” I’ll deal with washing my casserole dish.
For reals though.... I *almost* didn't post this first video at all...because I'm such a perfectionist! And that sound is horrendous! Sorry!! Promise it will get better!! I ordered in some better audio equipment...and after doing this first video I've learned so much! :) Thanks for commenting and hope you stick around! :)

Dip the bag in a full sink of water. Pushes out all the air, instant vacuum.

You probably also don't want to be eating that much aluminum.
I was thinking the same thing. But couldn't we wash and reuse containers or zip bags or metal 9 x 13 metal pans
Great tips for eating healthy.
I've been a Follower for quite awhile and really enjoy your Blog too!
Thank you!!!! So grateful for ya Tiffany!
New subbie! Love these tips!

2 gallon freezer bags work well for some meals.
I am quite sad that I just found your channel today and realized that you are no longer making videos. 😢

Liked your video continue
you need to find a place to do your videos that does not have so much echo other than that great job
George Stokes yeah The echo was bad in this for sure! First timer making a video - I’m doing better now!

lovely video Karrie :)

Thank you!
Ok if you put your freezer meals in aluminum pans do you cover the top with plastic wrap then aluminum foil? Thanks
My product is Indian curry paste. I am using plastic container to keep in freezer for long time self life. Is it ok? Plz comment.
Question - So if a meal calls for pasta. Should I undercook to El dente, so during the warm up step, your pasta isn't mushy?
I usually cook pasta 5-6 minutes, so its mostly cooked, but still hard kind of, then cool quickly and add to pasta bake dish to freeze. Then when it's baking it will not end up being super mushy!
I didn't know we can put instant pot containers directly on the pot?
What are good freezer containers?
" its probably still there." i laughed out loud

Tip number 7? How long should you put hot meals prepping in the fridge and freezer? 🙂
great tips.

Thanks. But in India we prepare each meal fresh. using fresh vegetables and fresh spice and herbs even in busy working schedule.
Which means you didn’t have to watch or comment 🙄🙄🙄
