This is part one of a series in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia! A melting pot for many cultures, this means there is nothing but unique and extraordinary takes on dishes as you see the culture and cooking flavors come together. . I start my day off with a classic Malaysian Breakfast then head off to the Batu Caves to witness some breathe taking views. I finish off my journey in Petaling Street or the Chinatown of Kuala Lumpur. I find so many Chinese influenced Malay dishes and other Chinese classics! I hope you all enjoy the video, feel free to comment, like, and subscribe if you like the content and want to see more! Also let me know what you would like to see and where you would like to see my future travels take me! Wishing you the best, Max McFarlin
Max McFarlin bro you haven't seen what local festive season had to offer, mouthful of food that'll blow your mind but easy on your pallet.. Each state of m'sia is superb
I travel to Malaysia from the UK twice a year and the primary reason for my long journey to KL and beyond is the cuisine. It simply can only be described as utterly incredible!!
I'm soon moving to Malaysia for my higher studies and your videos are already a great guide 😂 cuz I can't wait to try all these delicious dishes that you're trying! 😃❤️
dude. your face reaction when eating all that food was the bomb. makes me drool even im malaysian. you should be on reality show just for that sincere natural reaction.
M Arin thank you soooooo much for saying that! I’m still feeling super awkward in front of the camera so having you say that means a lot! Just trying to be myself and spread nothing but positivity🙏🏻 what part of Malaysia are you from?
So glad you appreciated Malaysian food! I'm a Chinese but know what, I love Malay and Indian food as well!! Thanks this beautiful diversity for existing in Malaysia throughout these decades:)
유진 ユジンEugene oh yes the diversity is a beautiful thing! Really has molded into something so unique! Wait, so you’re Chinese but you have korean and Japanese written avatar! That’s pretty diverse and awesome too😝🤗
I'm glad you found the food in Petaling Street. It's far better than the touristy food that are sold in Alor Street. Also, we call them Chinese Food or if you want to be specific, it's Malaysian Chinese food. When we say Malay, we are referring to a particular race. Malaysian Chinese food are not (only) influenced by Malays. In fact all food in Malaysia has been influenced by each ethnic group. Eg. Curry Mee; there is a Malay version, Chinese version, Indian version, Mamak (Muslim Indians) version, et cetera. If you were to explore each state, Curry Noodles will taste different as each state has their own take on just this one dish. Now imagine the variety of dishes that we have here in Malaysia that has been influenced by Malaysian Chinese, Northern and Southern Indians, Malays from various tribes and states, Indonesians, Thais, Mamak, Punjabi... the listt goes on. I don't know if anyone had already mentioned this; but that crunchy thing in the Hokkien Mee is deep fried pork lard. On the Fish Head noodle, the fillets are mainly from fish heads and that part with the long bones are from the rib section just before the head of the fish. We also have curry versions. The sugar in the Tau Fu Fa is Palm Sugar we call Gula Melaka (Malacca Sugar). It's so nice to see the look on the faces of foreigners when our food hits your palates. It's sad that many who visit us for the first time, are just too frighten to try the local dishes. They really don't know what they are missing.
Victor Lopez thanks so much for all this information man! This was actually really helpful so glad you chimed in! What are some of your must have dishes from Malaysia? Certain dishes I must try in specific states? I feel like I could learn so much from you!!
That's a huge list actually but off the top of my head are Bak Kut Teh, Chinese Chicken Rice, Rojak Pasembur and Chendol in SS15 Subang Jaya and Chinese soft skinned Popiah (klang is my spot for this) to name a few. You should also visit our weekly night markets (imagine the Pasar Ramadan you visited but much larger). If you come back here, contact me. I can show you the sights.
Jalan alor has varieties beyond chinese food. But sadly many stalls are run by migrant workers(not locals) i was told. And slightly higher price as it is touristy of course.
Great video! You definitely taught us to be open-minded when traveling and visiting other countries, accepting and respecting their food, culture and tradition. Amazing!
I am Malaysian and proud to be Malaysian...watch all your tour vids to Malaysia, thanks for your compliments about our food. Malaysian food is heaven 😍 drooling... enjoy...

Going to visit my best friend of 7 years for the first time in Kuala Lumpur from the US in 3 weeks I can't wait to experience the culture and especially the food with good friends
Max McFarlin , you welcome! However, I would like to make a couple of suggestions... RM10.00 instead of 10.00 MYR... a spoon is for scooping and a fork is for stabbing, not the other way round as is the norm in the US 😅 J'ai beaucoup aimé votre vlog. Jusqu'à la prochaine fois, à bientôt!

Hi Max! I came across your channel while binge watching Malaysian food videos. Considering you're rather new in this, I'd say you did quite a good job. Part of the joy of discovering a new channel is seeing how you guys grow from all aspects (commenting, editing, shots, developing your unique style, etc etc). What I like about you is that you're genuine, and did not resort to over-to-top commentaries or making a general fool of yourself. I hope you'll stay true to yourself, and take your time to develop your own unique style since well...Rome wasn't built in a day, yeah? lol All the best in your foodie channel, and you've gained a subscriber. Looking forward to more videos from you :) - A fan from Malaysia.

hi@@Macoi24 i know this is 5 years late but only just stumbled on your channel. Hokkien mee is definitely my fav and only in KL, because if you had Hokkien mee anywhere else, be it in any other town, state or even in Singapore, it would not be that dark special sauce one you had in KL - the KL Hokkien mee is one of a kind and the best version of the dish! 😋
Omg!! You did your research well! Village Park has really delicious fried chicken!! And all the other food you had are some of Malaysia's must eat!! Can't wait for more videos from you!
I've just binge watched all your videos and now Im happy that I was able to find your channel and learn all these amazing foods but... now I'm jealous and hungry 😳! Thanks for sharing this with us, your fun and entertaining to watch, I hope you gain far more popularity because you truly deserve it. Keep up the great work and enjoy your travels ☺️
Wow, thank you so much! This comment means so much to me!😁🙌 I will definitely keep working hard, my journey is just getting started and I cannot wait to continue to improve and get better!
Your food selection in KL just hit the right node. You really eat like a local! The best ever food vblog starring KL food. Come to Penang to try out our food too! Cheers!
I am glad to see that you are really taking the opportunity to enjoy our local cuisine. Sadly once you have it and when you return back to your home country you’ll be craving for it! 😝
Beautiful food in Malaysian very good healthy foods and the best food in town food is very good fresh healthy foods thank you for sharing your beautiful video love it all thanks
That sweet syrup on the tofu dessert is called Gula Melaka syrup and its made from palm sugar! Your videos are good and your openness to try new foods is amazing. Keep up the good work!
alanna Silver thank you for the information! I love trying new things or iconic foods from an area! I’m far from home but the food I try always connects me back🤔
hey bro, nice vlog, i am a malaysian chinese and i have been watching a lot of vlogs about foreigner trying malaysia food. i personally like your video the most compared to other famous youtubers' vlogs just because you have a damn good taste like mine, all the foods you tried are my top favourite foods here. nasi lemak, hokkien mee, apam balik, taufufa,...dont forget to try various indian roti(roti canai, roti telur, roti tissue,...) with nice curry.malaysia is surely a food heaven in the world~ enjoy your trip at malaysia~
hinz tan wow! Brother that’s some awesome news man! I can’t tell you how much that means to me! Ready to go make some even better videos! Glad you enjoyed them so far👊🏻👍🏻
Yes, Max, you really did your homework. You went to all those popular outlets. You have a good informer before hand. The most important, Max can take spices, that is how to enjoy Malaysian food. Foreigners whom are not able to take spices, cannot evaluate our food properly.

The coconut and peanut pancakes it’s called “apam balik” . Malays sell em too. Thin noodles = “mian sian” . The most tastiest noodles for any soup dishes
19.20 That was pork lard my brother. In my state which is called Melaka they cook Hokkien mee with charcoal. Fyi in Malaysia Melaka and Penang are specially famous with foods. You should come in the future.
Welcome to Malaysia! Hope you stay here longer because of we will be celebrating Hari Raya (muslim celebration) on the friday. I hope you can get to know a local that will offer you to celebrate together. And dont forget to visit bazaar Ramadhan. Starts late evening. You can find it anywhere. Lots of foods for you to explore. It ends probably this thursday so hurry up! Enjoy your stay and will be waiting more videos from you. Cheers!
Khalifa Allah Khalifa I got the opportunity to go to TTDI but unfortunately my stay was very short! I can’t wait to come back and be immersed in the culture for longer! Thank you 😊
Max McFarlin ahh i see. Well hope to see you soon back here in Malaysia! Oh and you have to visit our islands too. Pulau perhentian, pulau kapas, pulau redang, pulau langkawi and more. Not to forget our borneo islands too( sabah and sarawak). The islands there is the among beautiful island in the world. Hope you will explore more here. Cheers
The croutons in the Hokkien Mee are fried pork lard. That's why its so fragrant! I love the lard! Always asked for more when i ordered and Malaysia has the BEST fried mee! Love your videos by the way! Awesome!
Everytime I go to Malaysia, I can't wait to taste Malay Food, especially Malay Nasi Lemak. If you ate it with Malay Sambal Sotong, it would totally make it so much tastier.
I laugh when you show that you go back for that apam balik at the end.I know you will.. That is like guessing an ending of the story but surprising at the same time cause it is truely happen as expected. I'm enjoy watching it. Amazing video.
Suryafara bracke thank you so much! I had to go back or I would have had nightmares about not doing so😂 plus that guy making them is just too friendly!!!
Every time I go to Petaling Street I have to buy that peanut apam balik. Its too addictive. I can totally understand why you want to go back for second helpings.
Rosli Romasa Rms I have eaten it so many times already. The stall at Petaling Street is very popular. I always make it a point to buy some when I go there.
You know when you're a Malaysian and on a strict diet, watching this does make you question the whole purpose of what you're putting yourself into. -.-"
Stumbled into your channel n got excited to see you enjoying all the food. The hokien char mee has sambal (spicy ) it spices it up. It is a side dish that you can ask for it. Must try bakut teh and pork curry at Munggo Jerry
This month are the month of Ramadan, you should go to Bazar Ramadan, that are the foods heaven...you can go to Kampung Baru bazar Ramadan or TTDI bazar Ramadan...
Best time to be in m'sia during festive season is february fir chinese new year, you can find open house organised local government, its all invited. Eidul fitri for muslims this year in june 15th, also there is open house
Noor Azlina Baharuddin yes! I actually went to a bazar with a loving family and got to experience the breaking of the fast. Just a once in a lifetime experience I’ll never forget.
Kuala Lumpur Malaysia nice place to eat. For you it a great place to eat. Love tat facial expression. Making me hungry. That’s a nice temple thank for the tour Max. That’s a huge cavern. Now for more food. Yummmmm
Hi, that crunchy piece of thing that you're not sure what it is, actually it's oil fried pork lard. It's the remaining crusty part after going thru the frying process and is called "Chee Yaow Char" (in Cantonese lingo). It is a must have if you want your Hokkien fried mee(noodles) to taste good with a crunch to it.
Bro if you really like great authentic Malaysian food, go to Penang. It's mostly non-Malaysian chefs cooking the dishes in Kuala Lumpur and it just tastes different. I'm from Kuala Lumpur myself.
The yummy part of the peanut " pancake " is the edge piece - with the crust ! Next time , u must try Nyonya food in Penang- Its a food paradise! The flavors are soooo bursting with lemon grass , coconut , lime leaves etc 😍 Also, If you like the thick noodle in black gravy, u will love Char kueh tiao , another famous " padthai - ish " dish but more yummy
The way to do the million dollar bite with nasi lemak is that get a bite of the chicken mix the rice, sambal, anchovies and peanut in a spoonful and stuff it in your mouth like there's no tomorrow. The hokkien fry noodles you should ask for the belacan which is a chili paste that you can go with the noodle. I recommend that you split your noodle in two portion, one with original flavor and the other one with belacan it's awesome. Eating that fish head noodles with that much chili padi in one bite is ballsy man even I don't dare. The tau fu fa/ soy bean curd is best eaten with brown sugar syrup or you can try it with the ginger sugar it elevates the flavor to a new level. Drinking soy bean milk I recommend brown sugar it's way better than white sugar. Anyways hope u enjoy your stay here.😄
Darren Chan you’re a knowledgeable person😁 thanks for all the information and I loved my time in Malaysia! It was much too short so I can’t wait to be back!
U r really fun to watch.. 😍and 1 more thing, in sabah we call that apam balik, is terang bulan..so if u travel to sabah, ask them kuih terang bulan.. 😄
angela d adam Ahhhh perfect!!! I will try and remember that! No guarantees because I forget things so easily😂 glad you enjoyed watching! Welcome to the family😁
we are celebrating eid fitri next week. make sure to go eid fitri open house to sample our malay traditional dish. welcome to malaysia and have a safe trip here.
"Anywhere that have fried chicken for breakfast is the place I wana be" 😂 Heck yeah! 🤜🤛 RM10 for a plate of chicken nasi lemak is hardly expensive considering its a popular eateries in KL. As a traveller its best to eat food u know is safe and in popular eateries you know even the local approves of (minus those local bargain food hunter that commented) 😅
Parny 25 true words have never been spoken more! It was a great spot for the first time and now gives me a bases for when I go back and try to find a bargain spot😁
The chicken at Village Park is huge and so tasty...as a local, rm10 is fair! Some places tend to overcook the chicken but they keep it so juicy even though they churn the chicken out at lightning speed. The crispy bits are the best!
The kaya toast you dipped in the tea is usually served with a half-boiled egg that has soy sauce and white pepper on it. And you dip the toast in like what we Aussies call "toast soldiers". Jalan Petaling rocks at night. The hotel I stay in when I go to KL is right on this street. Bargaining for stuff is a sport and a great way to spend an evening interacting with the stall owners. 10:15 The drum of charcoal with the chestnuts in it is a smell that drags me back nearly fifty years. I swear I can smell it 200 yards upwind! Did you try air mata kucing- literally "cat's eye water"? The sauce on that tofu will be gula melaka- palm sugar. Then you've got the places that sell sliced fruits on skewers.
Ohhhh yes, these old videos. First time to Malaysia and sooooo many mistakes haha. No there is so much I missed! Oh well, gives me a good reason to go back!
@@Macoi24 I recommend you to visit Penang as there are also wide variety of food over there like curry noodle, nasi kandar also known as nasi ganja (addicted rice or drug rice in english, haha, i know weird right?)..and the street stall of char kueh teow.. you will love them..! Mouth watering!!
Also not to forget, penang laksa.. actually I can go on and on.. I myself haven't got the chance to taste them all yet eventhough I have been my life time here... Hahaha.. imagine yoh have to go for diet here..can never work
natrah01475 awhhh man! I definitely want to go to Penang but I need to wait until I can have a long time for vacation for work! Because I know it’s going to take me a long time to taste all this delicious food! Can’t wait to get my chance though!
Rizby Rizal Faiz I Forsure will! I barely got to scratch the surface with what it has to offer. Although I’m grateful for everything I got to experience and eat during my short time🙏🏻
Oh no... You were just steps away from a more well known hokkien mee place... google petaling street hokkien mee. And if you like yong tau foo, also nearby go to Madras Lane, very popular for yong tau foo and noodles. Looks like you'll have to make a return visit, Max... lol
14:48 whatever noodle soup you ate. Looked so yummy and healthy. Malaysia have so many different groups live there. Food must be amazing to eat Thank your for the virtue tour. Love it.❤❤😊😊👍👍🌹🌹

hey bro, nice vlog, i am a malaysian chinese and i have been watching a lot of vlogs about foreigner trying malaysia food. i personally like your video the most compared to other famous youtubers' vlogs just because you have a damn good taste like mine, all the foods you tried are my top favourite foods here. nasi lemak, hokkien mee, apam balik, taufufa,...dont forget to try various indian roti(roti canai, roti telur, roti tissue,...) with nice curry.malaysia is surely a food heaven in the world~ enjoy your trip at malaysia~
hinz tan wow!

19.20 That was pork lard my brother. In my state which is called Melaka they cook Hokkien mee with charcoal. Fyi in Malaysia Melaka and Penang are specially famous with foods. You should come in the future.

Hahaha that act of putting a bag of iced-drinks on the face - we Malaysians do that too sometimes! 😂😂😂 we too can't really stand the heat tbh

natalie khoo yesss! I want People to know more about a city and place than the food! You need to know the environment and people too!
Shouldn't have watched this at 5 AM 😂
Savage Sagwa ohhhh yeah that’s rough🤪
Savage Sagwa im watching this 4 minutes before 5AM 😂
Love 😍 love 😍 love 😍 the food u eat.. Make me always hungry
Bro if you really like great authentic Malaysian food, go to Penang. It's mostly non-Malaysian chefs cooking the dishes in Kuala Lumpur and it just tastes different. I'm from Kuala Lumpur myself.

Next time , u must try Nyonya food in Penang- Its a food paradise! The flavors are soooo bursting with lemon grass , coconut , lime leaves etc 😍
Also, If you like the thick noodle in black gravy, u will love Char kueh tiao , another famous " padthai - ish " dish but more yummy
Ohhhhhhhhh, that sounds like my favorite combination of flavors! I cannot wait until I get the opportunity to come to Penang!!!!!
Thank a lot Max..great review
Suhaimi Rahaman just glad you enjoyed it! I hope to do better the next time👍🏻
@Max McFarlin ,very nice vblog of yours, just subscribed. Have fun in Malaysia and why not hop over to Labuan Island near Kota Kinabalu as well?
Mohd Sharkawi Lu Abdullah welcome to the family brother! I’m not in Malaysia right now, but I’ll be back in 2019 to take a very extensive trip!
Max McFarlin No problem. Malaysia welcomes you.

Aku bangga jd rakyat malaysia🇲🇾
"Anywhere that have fried chicken for breakfast is the place I wana be" 😂 Heck yeah! 🤜🤛
RM10 for a plate of chicken nasi lemak is hardly expensive considering its a popular eateries in KL.
That crunchy thing in your hokkien mee is deep fried pork lard...god's ingredient!
Yes that's the most important ingredient in hokkien mee ❤️
Love your voice max, a sweet guy u r!! Love your vid too!!
Wonder Indigo I’m so glad you loved it😊
Darn it man. I've eaten all these before, yet you managed to get me hungry again for them.
hound3000 mmmm, well please do go and enjoy them again😋
The country where u can never get enough of the food and stay hungry forever.
natrah01475 exactly!!! Definitely ate my fair share while there! And so much more to go🤗
@@Macoi24 I recommend you to visit Penang as there are also wide variety of food over there like curry noodle, nasi kandar also known as nasi ganja (addicted rice or drug rice in english, haha, i know weird right?)..and the street stall of char kueh teow.. you will love them..!
