    I like how this video's POV is like a neighbor putting their camera on a neighbor who knows how to garden and will explain what he knows to the new neighbor, who wants to learn how to grow.

    Thanks for the advice to wait! It's already June and we've got some leaves growing already. It's our second summer in this house that had the vines with it and I thought we pruned in the spring!

    well,... glad I watched. I knew in my heart it was too late to prune here in SC but I have been working on a trellis and wanted to move them off the chicken run arbor because it's too difficult to prune. So now I have to wait until next year... will probably just get new plants soon so I can use new trellis... ugh. Oh well... another mistake.

    • @TheMillersWay
      @TheMillersWay  4 роки тому +1

      You can still prune it but wait until they start growing.

    You're right, the professionals say to prune back to 2 buds. I'm new at this so I don't know.

      @@TheMillersWay Let me know how that works. We are in Litchfield and are very novice. We only have 8 vines, 4 standard concord that have been in the ground for 2 years and 4 (I wish I didn't plant) seedless concord that are about 5 years in the ground. My training on those started out okay, but I'm at a point where I do not know how to get them back into shape.

    Hi there. So we live in the Pacific Northwest. I have a concord vine that is now 3 years old. Has never given me grapes but this year grew tremendously. So do I prune in February?

    • @TheMillersWay
      @TheMillersWay  Рік тому

      If you have never had grapes on a three-year-old vine, maybe you are pruning it too aggressively.
      If you have been pruning every spring, give it a rest this coming spring and see what happens.

      @@TheMillersWay I’ve never pruned it yet. The deer have usually eaten it too far back until this year. Never has given grapes.

      I would prune the vines in late February/early March of 2023. Pruning the vines should stimulate grape production.

    thank you for ur tips! Do you prune in the fall? Do you believe that prunning grapes is better in the spring than in the fall? Thank you!

    • @TheMillersWay
      @TheMillersWay  3 роки тому +3

      Prune grapes in late winter. Fall pruning creates risk for hard winter freeze damage to your vines.

    Thanks for sharing the video, are these seedless concords? reason I ask i just planted some concord seedless. Also looks like from the video you are using the spur pruning technique? instead of cane pruning? hard to tell from the video are your vines overlapping in the row? Thanks for your time.

    • @TheMillersWay
      @TheMillersWay  2 роки тому

      No they are not overlapping and yes I used spur pruning technique. Thank you for your questions and for stopping by. We appreciate it.

    Sir, thank you for the tutorial. Can you tell me how wide the plant gets? Can I plant the grape tree 1 foot away from a fence or I need walkways on both sides?

    • @TheMillersWay
      @TheMillersWay  2 роки тому +1

      Plant grape vine 8 feet apart, in rows 5 to 6 feet apart.

    great Vid! Thank you. I haven't started pruning my vines yet do you think its too late? It'll be my first time, looking after my recently passed fathers 30 yr old vines. Hope i don't screw it up..

    • @TheMillersWay
      @TheMillersWay  4 роки тому +3

      Not too late. Vines should have buds swelling. If they have been neglected for years, start out slow. Trim out crossing vines and vines close to the ground.

    Is this just one vine planted and gotten so long or there are multiple vines planted?

    • @TheMillersWay
      @TheMillersWay  2 роки тому +2

      They are multiple vines and over the years they got longer. Had to prune them every spring.

  • @jeffkimble8857
    @jeffkimble8857 2 роки тому

    No professional would ever say prune Concord grapes to 2 buds. Concord typically fruits on buds 4-8. Your trimmed canes need 4-8 buds. Any more is wasting energy. Less will mean reduced fruit.

    Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else wants to discover how to grow grape vines on a trellis try Grape grower folio (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my colleague got great results with it.
