I have searched and searched for a thorough explanation about pruning grapes, and I am so glad I finally found this video! Now I understand both how and why to prune the neglected grapevine in the backyard. The photographs overlaid with coded graphics made the concepts very clear and easy to understand. How generous of you to share your expertise with us freely. Thank you so much. To your health!
I'm studying for WSET level 4 and had real problems absorbing the info about viticulture - if you're not a farmer or ever stepped I foot inside a vineyard, it doesn't exactly leap off the page... So, I just spent the afternoon watching most of the videos so far. I was looking for something that would take me through the process of looking after vineyard step by step and I struck gold. Thank you so much for posting, Tom. Finally I understand about spurs, cordons, fruiting canes etc. They're unbelievably informative and really well done. This must have been days and days of work - it's a fantastic resource to make available for free.
THis man takes the time to explain EVERYTHING from start to finish AND both ways of pruning them...HE HAS THE BEST VIDEO of over at least 30-40 ive watched..HE KNOWS HIS SHIT AND IT SHOWS..the others are way too lazy to take the time to break it down and take it for granit you understand the parts they leave out...HATS OFF TO THIS MAN AND HE SHOULD MARKET THIS ON DVD,he deserves paid for his time and knowledge....
Some people have complained about the "slow" place of this video, but it contains a level of detail no other video I've watched include. if this video video was faster-place, those same people would likely complain about lack of content. GREAT VIDEO!
Learning from the ground up. Spent hours watching small videos that explain nothing. THIS explains it very very well. Thank you for taking the time to share this wonderful information. :)
This is absolutely incredible information. Step by step, old-fashioned, old-timer wisdom here. I love the pace and the patience you exhibit, sir. You're from a different time in America: a BETTER time. It's as if I'm being taught by my kindly neighbor.
Thank you Tom. This is indeed the first video I see explaining the two types of cane pruning, renewal spur and fruiting spur. Thanks so much. I just subscribed.
What a detailed info about pruning of grapevines. I am a newbie grapevine grower , I only planted my grapevines in pots and are loaded with fruits but I did not know all about these pruning techniques.
Excellent Grape videos clips. I watched several video clips made by you and all of them were awesome . Thanks for your teaching style. It was easy understanding. I enjoyed it. Thanks!
Awesome! My dad asked me to come "cut" the grape vines. No one knows how. My grandfather lived to 100 and it's been sitting for about 6 years now since he passed on. It's a HUGE, covering over like a huge hall! they used to sit under for shade. It's beautiful, but needs big help!! I don't even think my grandfather kept it up as he used to at his age. So now I'm searching, scrambling to learn. I've always wanted to learn and I'm so glad I found the perfect videos to help. Your a great teacher, good speaker, not repeating yourself, lol, not talking for the sake of talking as many UA-camrs do. So I thank you so much!! I wish I could send you pics of the over 100 year old Concord grape vine I've got to figure out how to prune, here on Cape Cod!! But I'm sure there are tree people around if I feel it's too much. Just doubt dad will let ANYONE pay for a pruner and won't pay himself either! Old school. Anyway, thanks so much!! On to the next video!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you for the explanation of how to prunes grapevines as well as why certain things are necessary to do, like leaving a cane or two that may eventually replace a cordon. I planted my grapevine 21 months ago, and today realized it needs pruning, but had no idea how to shape it and what to trim in order to get fruit. Hap lots of leaves this year, no fruit yet.
Thanks for the advice! I’ve been converting my backyard into a permaculture yard and I have surrounded my yard with grapevines I propagated. Thanks for the advice on pruning!
Your video was in a long list of pruning videos. Thank heaven I kept watching with the hope one of them would make sense. Yours has!! I am not kidding, the other videos left me saying I don't get it! I don't get it! I don't get it! Now I am starting to understand. I will watch you set of videos probably several times until I completely understand. I am so grateful for your through explanation! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!! Judie
Love the video, starting my buffalo grapes first full year so far I have my fingers crossed and I’m glad it survived the negative 15 degrees C we got here this winter ( went out and checked one of the lower buds I want gonna use for life and no visible damage to the vines) hope all is goin well and best of wishes to all in this growing year.
great video. should i care about spur renewals if growing on 16 ft by 16 ft by 8 ft high pergola. i have trunks growing from only 2 corners of the 4 corner pergola, and there are canes all over the top covering it completely. I think i should just slightly tip (heading cut) prune 1 year only canes and spur prune (1 or 2 nodes) older canes and laterals? appreciate thoughts?
This has to be the poorest execution of pace AND the best execution of content. Yet it DID delivery what is missing in so many or all other videos on the topic. Good work with photos of different stages of growth. Thanks for the help!
I have a 4 year old grape vine that has not been pruned correctly and has not produced any fruit. Should I hard prune most of the canes back when it is dormant?
When you have one concord grape blueberry Vine with multiple shoots coming out of the ground. And you have a fence that's 6 ft wide and 6 ft tall, which method of pruning would you use? I'm very confused. Thank you
Thanks for your videos. I have one question regarding pruning that is the following. If we have a cane system and for some reason, we want or need to change, can we keep the cane and transform that to a cordon?
Greetings from Nova Scotia, Canada! Appreciate your methodical approach! Just recently acquired 2 mature vines (about 5 years old) which I have replanted and they are responding well. They were pruned hard for the transplant and my intention is to train these across and over a pergola. My question is whether I should prune to secure structure during the growing season or wait until normal spring pruning??

Yup, watching all of his videos took me from someone who knew nothing about grapes, to someone quite knowledgeable.

lol...thanks. not sure faster words would have given me the best outcome but maybe it would have forced me to pay 100% attention to catch everything.
Dang wish I would have found this earlier. Just finished my pruning.
