So no... they didn't have to give it to the king. Someone bought it and gave it to them willingly. Also, it was a british owned mine in a british commonwealth colony. Without the british digging it out, it'd still be in the ground. So south africa doesn't have any claim to it. Spanish gold was Spanish gold and still is Spanish gold. They still have the same monarchy going on over there now as they did in 1650. So yeah, they should have claim over that. Unless it was mined with slave labour then there's an argument to dispute that.

@@ronaldjamescastillo1882it actually refers to the dangerous work conditions and high death rate in natural diamond mining. This is a big reason why diamonds have their insane price. They occur naturally very often and aren’t scarce at all. He’s right though, if it was just sticking out on the surface the miners would have taken it out immediately. He likely owned or helped manage the mine. So we can safely say it probably is a blood diamond. It’s likely people died getting to the point in which he found it either way.

You really didn't pay attention to the video. There were two halves. One was just over 500 carats, the other was just over 300 carats. Plus, there were several smaller stones as well. In total just under 1100 carats for all stones combined. You always lose a significant amount when cutting gems regardless to get the right facets and shape. All gems start out bigger before cut.
