Interesting fact about this....the audience hadn't heard this song before. The show was recorded 20th March '82. The album wasn't released until 2 days later on the 22nd. This was the 21st show of the tour to promote the album Number of the Beast. This song was only recorded for the album in January 82' and the tour started late February.
Iron Maiden are kind of like the standard bearers for metal. No matter where the genre goes, Iron Maiden is always there, they are great, and they are consistent. They also helped, along with Judas Priest, creare the traditional style and aesthetic in headbanger culture.
Regarding the crowd, almost none of them had heard the song before. This show at Hammersmith was the night before the album was released in 1982. No internet, no advance radio play, no knowledge of the set list. You just showed up and wondered what you'd see.
SCREAM FOR ME SHEIK!!!! And A New Maiden Head is born!!! Up The Irons!!!! Next Up....Try Wasted Years by Iron Maiden...that will hook your head!!! That, or Can I Play With Madness.
Hey, brother! So glad you decided to start with Iron Maiden! I find this song very uplifting despite the lyrics! If you want to see some great crowd reaction, try "Fear of the Dark (Live at Rock in Rio)" or "The Trooper" (from the same concert). Iron Maiden makes very "energetic" performances, despite some of these guys being granddaddies. If you're still interested in digging deeper into the classic Metal rabbit hole, I suggest one of the following for the next reaction: Black Sabbath - Paranoid (official) Black Sabbath - War Pigs (official) Metallica - Master of Puppets (lyric video) Metallica - One (there's a subtitled version of the original video, which I recommend). Grant it, there's plenty of hair found on pretty much all of the band members (back then), Iron Maiden is definitely NOT a "hair metal" band. Most hair metal bands have a good percentage of their tracks sounding rather "pop". In other words, if what you're listening to sounds as if might hear it today on a "classic rock" radio station (often), then more than likely that band would fall into the genre. However, the majority of metal fans despise that particular label as it emphasizes "fashion", which in turn sends the message the band is lacking in "talent"... And in many cases, that couldn't be further from the truth.
One of the best bands ever!
