This is something I’ve been thinking about and I couldn’t have put it better. I keep going to start a new game I want to play and telling myself ‘but what if I’m not in the right mindset to enjoy it and ruin it for myself.’ The individual experience is a lot harder to come by when everything is so convenient, I feel like physical media becoming scarce also doesn’t make it easier

I completely agree with your experiences and perspective on the missing ritual and experience of immersing yourself in one game and the longing of bygone quiet days private life with your close family friends and games you can physical hold and cherish because its all you had as a kid. We got more out of it for sure. These types of discussions are becoming more and more frequent as many are finally becoming aware of what has been lost due to this modern age. Best channel I discovered this year.

I am so old now... I used to rent video games from blockbuster and hollywood videos. The rented games were my prime focus for the weekend or however long I had them. Even participated in game tournaments at my local hollywood videos (Dead or Alive and MVC2). I miss those simpler times.

Same here! My local place was called "Select Video" - it was a little family run place that always used to have cool games and VHS tapes. Then after that shut we used to go to Blockbuster too 😊

so true. I never owned a PS2 as a kid, getting PCSX2 up and running is seriously one of the best gaming experiences I've had in over a decade. But having every game ever at my finger tips does come with downsides.

Great vid, unique but really relatable. There was something so special about getting a new game that you devoted your entire attention to, that included a box and a manual - yes I read through them all too! Sometimes it was cool to finish up a session playing the new game then just reading the manual through to cover the bits you missed, which just continued the immersion. It's a lost art

For me, immersion is all about world-building.
Recently, i've been playing Pokemon Platinum on the DS, as i've heard people say it has both the best region and story.
I was surprised on how well everything is contextualized. You see npcs in a town about a contest happening on the next. Then when you get there, that memory of their dialogue comes and it just clicks.

    • @DreamcastEnjoyer
      @DreamcastEnjoyer  6 місяців тому

Ooooo that sounds cool - I've actually got a big blindspot in my Pokemon knowledge there. I played Yellow back in the day (and replayed recently) and I love that, but the newer ones on the Switch didn't grab me. Maybe it's time to fire up the DS!

Really good video! You're definitely on to something with the ritual around deciding on a game being different back in the 90s/2000s. Throughout the lifespan of the N64, me and my brother would always rent a game or two from blockbuster on the weekend, and then that was it for that week. I remember renting Conker's Bad Fur Day and being so obsessed and immersed in the game world, we played the single player and multiplayer to death. Some others include Winback, Body Harvest, Jet Force Gemini and Goemon. There's something nice about being able to just focus in on one game instead of having every game ever made placed right at your fingertips. Back then the whole setup around gaming was more conducive to actually getting the full, complete experience, and I miss that.

You have hit the nail right on the head when it comes to self limitation. For years I have just picked and binged or picked and move on. I have also started limiting myself, maybe in the wrong way as I do things like Sunday is Final Fantasy day or Tuesday is Open world day. I need to take a leaf out of your book and pull back even more with less games over a bigger time period.
The Mrs and I are also limiting ourselves to one epiose of Shogun & Fallout a week to bring back that tension of waiting. Well that and there are a limited amount of new shows watching these days. But I think self limitation is the key.

This was pretty nicely done. The talking points are pretty good, and I think it does point out pretty well how drastic the change has been to gaming today versus what it used to be, what with having far more access to many different games than we ever did when we were younger. Good vid, will check out more and hope your channel does well.

Very well said. There is something about rituals and what you said to be a private world that we should try cultivate with limitations to warrant investment that came naturally prior 100%

Always impressed by your ability to elucidate on trends/topics within the industry, establish a concise language with which to discuss them, and eliminate some of the garbledegook semantics that would otherwise keep these disucssions in the realm of emotional slapfights. Sometimes we know what we feel, and we can rationalize in our heads without language, but we lack the granularity of words to get it all out. Videos like this one help to establish that foundation for discourse.
In the case of this video, a lot of thoughts and feelings can be condensed to at least a partial explanation of "immersion". It's simple, but Ive honestly never thought of the old v new games discourse in that light.
    Good stuff I say!

5:04 the fact that Frogun, despite only coming out 2 years ago, doesn't feel out of place visually with any of the other actually nostalgic games shown in this video raises a real good point about how the phrase "they don't make them like they used to" is complete nonsense. If people know where to look, they can find cool stuff still coming out just fine. It's why I've been enjoying the video game industry the most I have been since 2004 in the past few years.
