      Hi there. Thanks so much! It's been so great winter sowing as our winters in New England are so cold and long. I love opening up the winter sown containers in the spring and getting so many plants that way!
      That's great that you sowed some amazing gray poppies. Together we can prick out the seedlings and plant them out in our landscape this spring! 😊💐

    Last year in Zone 5b/6a, Wisconsin I had great luck sowing Icelandic Poppies frozen in ice cubes then scattered on the snow. I believe it’s best where snow is in contact with soil and no mulch. Cheers and thank you!

      Hi Pam. What a great idea. Thanks for sharing! I'll have to give this ice cube method a try. 😊💐

    Last winter was the first time I have ever grown Poppies here in Michigan. I did it directly into the ground in December. I kept my eye on them and wasn’t sure they would survive. I was thrilled and proud to when they started coming up. They all fully bloomed and looked beautiful. I had a patch in my front yard and a smaller patch in my backyard. I just had to make sure they were in full sun. It’s slightly warmer right now in 6a and maybe I’ll throw some more out tomorrow and try it again.😊

      Hi Beth. Thanks for sharing your experience and letting us know what worked and where you live. This week it'll be warming up a little and hopefully the snow will melt enough so that I can see where I'm scattering some poppy seeds. I'll be sure to mark those areas so that I remember them come spring time. Good luck with your poppies, friend! 😊🌸

    Thanks for explaining why my poppies never germinated. I never realized they need a cold spell first. You are my same zone. Subscribed. Looking forward to poppy updates.

      Hi there. Thank you for your comment and for subscribing to my channel. 🙏🏼 I will surely give updates on the winter sown poppies, how I transplant the seedlings, and how care for the plants. I hope you have better luck with your poppy plants next year.🤞🏼

      Hi Evelyn. Yes - definitely give poppies a try! A lot of people struggle with getting them to grow. The reason is they really dislike having their roots disturbed. So if you do the "Hunk of Seeds" method when transplanting them, you'll be better off. I'll show how I do this come springtime. 😊🌷

    I’m excited to winter sow for the first time this year, and Poppies are on my list. Thanks for the video! Last year was my first year planting poppies. I did them in seed starting containers under grow lights in March (zone 6b) and transplanted them into a larger pot wheb they outgrew the little cells. They did not do great potted so I stuck them right in the ground mid June and they loved that and thrived. Looking forward to lots of varieties this year.

      Hi Mara! I'm so excited to hear this will be your first year winter sowing! Some advice I have is make sure your containers are not too shallow, don't use seed starting mix, make sure your containers have enough drainage holes, don't let the containers dry out, and start pricking seeds out as soon as plants have a few sets of true leaves.
      Thank you for sharing your experience with growing poppies from seed indoors. I'm curious - did those poppies bloom the first year? If so, did you scatter their seeds afterwards?
      I'm really hoping for a great show with my poppies this year! 😊🌸

    Poppies are so beautiful 🌸 I have red ones in my garden and the neighbors are always asking to get some from those. They spread so fast that I can easily give them some plants. I'd like to get other colors as well. Thank you very much for sharing. Have a nice festive season 🎄🎉🎆🎊

    • @budgetgardeningvita
      @budgetgardeningvita  24 дні тому

      I agree - poppies really are so pretty! Are your poppies annual that reseed themselves or do you have the perennial variety? For your neighbor, I'm guessing the best way to share is by giving seed as they can be tricky to transplant (unless you get a very small seedling and are careful with the roots). I hope you are having a nice holiday, friend! 💗🎄

    I have been winter sowing poppies for going on 3 years. I found if you sow them heavy and plant them out in hunks they grow amazing. I just winter sowed 14 gallon jugs the other night so keep your fingers crossed they make it again.

      @budgetgardeningvita  24 дні тому +1

      Hi Gwen! Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I think you're right in that separating the hunks will give a better chance of survival. I hope we both have a great poppy year! 🤞🏼😊🌸

      Thanks, Kim! I'm going to experiment this year and broadcast some seeds in a garden space. If I get to it, I'd also like to try and sow a small amount under lights in peat pots later in the winter just to see what happens. 😊🌸

      Hi Cheri! Thanks for sharing your experience with scattering poppy seeds outdoors! I'm curious - when did you scatter your seeds and when did your poppies bloom?
      We currently have snow on the ground but it may be melting in a few days. When it does, I'm planning to scatter poppy seeds as well. I'll be marking where I scatter them. 😊🤞🏼🌸

      @budgetgardeningvita I scattered them in January and they bloomed in early June. This year I will scatter the seeds in January and place a clear milk hug over them and see if that makes a difference. I think the rain displaced some of the seeds. I am in central iowa

      Oh WOW. That's awesome!! I'm trying to video and sow one type of plant a day (for example, poppies I have like 12 jugs with 12 varieties of poppies). The question is - what will I be winter sowing next...? 😅
      Please see my latest poll where I ask what people have winter sown so far. I'm curious to know what you've sown. 💗

    😅we already discussed the poppy takeover in my garden. Now watch, I probably won’t have any next year because I ripped most out. Had a Ton of seed. They were the red poppies. I did grow breadseed poppies and not sure if any seed are out there. We will see. Lauren’s grape also and those and breadseed are much more shrubby plants and leaves than the red. If the seed is allowed to grow during summer to a nice 3-6” basal size before winter they will stay green all winter and take off-like a lot of them 😂.
    You will sure have a variety. The CA poppies were a bit weak here, Z5, WI.
    Oh, one thing I haven’t experienced yet is if they cross pollinate.

    • @budgetgardeningvita
      @budgetgardeningvita  24 дні тому +1

      Oh my goodness! Isn't it funny when some of us pray for one poppy plant to bloom and drop its seeds while others of us are ripping them out? I think the same is true with Lupine and Delphinium! 😅
      I'm hoping I have a good amount take off. Now the question is where to plant them... 😂

    • @dustyflats3832
      @dustyflats3832 24 дні тому

      @ I’m going to try to get them going in the home orchard area where I let other flowers naturalize to crowd weeds. Work in progress as they compete against rabbits and deer. As long as they have some clear ground and moisture they will take off. The chunk method is how I transplanted the red and by the end of the year a bunch of seedlings were carpeting everywhere. Good luck 🍀

    Catching late brought my niece to a bus station in Albany to go visit a friend from college who is doing residency at a hospital in New Jersey. They are from Texas and have no one here to spend time with for the holidays,a year ahead of my niece.pick her up at bus station tomorrow 11:30pm. What I won’t do for that girl we got there and we were told bus was running forty to fifty minutes late so we sat.
