Making Drawers For Bottles And Cans - Space for 108

    Great idea. I wonder though if this would have been a perfect project to use the box joint jig with a dado stack. You could have cut the strips of plywood, attached the top edge banding first and then cut dado's at half the height of the board at the spacing you need, take half of the pieces flip them around turn them 90 degrees and slide the whole thing together. It worked well for me when I made some drawer dividers for our kitchen.

    • @IBuildItHome
      @IBuildItHome  5 років тому +12

      The answer is efficiency. Not only for time, but for materials.
      I had a lot of scrap plywood that would be too small to make full length pieces, and cutting slots as you describe takes a lot longer than just cutting pieces and assembling. These drawers are purely utilitarian, and not made to look like family heirlooms.
      And did you notice that table saw is not dado stack ready?

      I think it's a fantastic idea and great execution as well. I love your attention to detail, yet you don't let it get in the way of just getting things done!
      I have to say: that kitchen is coming along VERY nicely and I can't wait to see the completely finished result, though I recon that it might take a while (but you seem to be on a bit of a roll lately regarding the kitchen, so hopefully it keeps you motivated to do more of these projects.
      Great video as always!

    Looks like we are in the same boat with the drinkable bad tasting water. We used to do the water bottle thing but switched to a bottom loading water cooler which I find much more convenient. Being that it is more convenient, I drink more water and less pop so it is cheaper and better for my health. It is also cheaper in terms of buying the water. Here a case of 35, 500ml bottles (17.5l) is about $4.00 and a refill of an 18.9l bottle at Canadian Tire is $0.99. Here we go though a little more than a bottle a week so the cooler paid for itself and the bottles in a little over a year. The house is tiny here and we are quite space conscious but the cooler and bottles take up the space where cases of water used to sit so that is kind of a wash. It does save space in the fridge though and you are not always having to open the fridge. Recycling is not convenient here so it also saves a lot of waste from going to the landfill. Your project keeps things organized really well but like I said we are quite space conscious and I am thinking I would be able to get a lot more bottles in a regular drawer. I might add one or two cross pieces to keep them more upright and stop them from sliding when opening and closing, and to add some strength as the bottles would be a heavy load.

    Maybe I worry too much about rotating supplies so I always use the oldest first, but I can't help feeling that the bottles and cans at the back are going to get ignored. To counter my worries I would have probably made this so the product could be slid forwards in channels rather than boxes, so the resupply could be done at the back. Or, for strength, side to side. Who am I kidding, I would have made this to take whole cases of bottles, I'd be too lazy to unpack them. In fact, I'd leave the cases in the garage.

    • @tinacarter8785
      @tinacarter8785 5 років тому

      David Powell you can still rotate, pull 1,bring another forward to its place, at the same time, or when restocking pull forward, cuz my kids never do ! I hav to rotate everything stored, esp since hubby is into prepper-ness! And box stores bulk .Is that a word? Is now Lol😁

    That's a great idea. Sure beats having to go out to the garage every time you want to re-stock the fridge. Here in Texas, the garage can be in the very high 90's (Fahrenheit) throughout the summer...really puts a strain on the fridge and ice maker for any liquids stored out there.

    Similar principle to my spice drawer, except I got an offcut of 3/4" ply which fitted in the bottom of the drawer then drilled a grid of holes with a forstner bit for the small jars to sit in.
    It just drops in the existing drawer with a couple of stand-offs to lift it up a bit.
    ---
    Probably slightly quicker to build for small jars, although I don't think I'd have a bit big enough for cans/bottles and a holesaw leaves a horrible finish.

    I understand completely.... my water supply from the council used to be lovely but, over the last 20 years, has deteriorated terribly so I buy drinking water now because, as you said, filters make little difference. However, I have a 65' deep traditional brick-lined well in my garden which has water that people used to come for from all around here because of the wonderful quality (it is filtered through peat). I was supposed to get it going again this year but this year is disappearing rapidly so it will probably be next year. There will be a video.

    Awesome John, just like all of your projects! Hey just curious why you chose the route of building up the drawer grid by glueing/ pinning each piece together instead the other route of making drawer dividers by cutting out a series of opposing slots equally spaced across each board that interlock together to make the grid/ dividers?

    Lose the dividers altogether - pack hexagonally - you can fit a bunch more bottles in the same space. And if you need support in the middle of the drawer, put just two dividers in a cross from corner to corner leaving the square drawer divided into 4 triangles.

    • @IBuildItHome
      @IBuildItHome  5 років тому +1

      Sure, but what happens when the drawer is just half full and you slide it open? Didn't think that far, did you?

    • @mattbillenstein
      @mattbillenstein 5 років тому

      Yes, true, but point still stands re space -- what if you made the dividers out of something round? Like one of those heavy cardboard tubes? Then you can still pack hexagonally and perhaps the dividers can even be placed without gluing them in so the drawer could be easily repurposed later.

    What are your thoughts on using a finish nailer over a brad nailer? Looking to buy my first gun and it sounds like a finish nailer can be more versatile than a brad nailer. Finish nails are also a bit stronger than brads. Only issue I can see here is with thinner stock.

    • @IBuildItHome
      @IBuildItHome  5 років тому

      For me a brad nailer is the most versatile, but it depends on what you are primarily doing. If you are doing a lot of trim carpentry in a house, a 16 gauge nailer would be the better one to have if you can only have one. I have all three - 16, 18 and 23 gauge pin.

    I think I would have just went with a drawer without the dividers. This is one of those things that seems like a good idea until you have to drop each bottle into a compartment every time you bring home a case of water instead of just grabbing 4 or 5 at a time and putting them in the drawer. Plus you could probably fit a few more bottles than with the dividers. A little less efficient and practical imo, but it definitely keeps everything neat and orderly if you’re somewhat OCD. Just my opinion tho.
