For me personally what makes this song so great is it tells the lesser known story of someone who gets left behind in a failed relationship when one person is ready to move on before the other is, the third verse especially covers how watching that same person in a relationship later and how they treat their new significant other so much better than they ever did them, that burning, cutting pain from the realization the X had the potential to be a better person they just didn't see you as worth the effort.

This was mentioned in the Tom Petty Biography I read. Initially, he did write this for S. Nicks. However, the song was too good and he told her and she said “ keep it”. Write a different song for me. So he did, “ stop dragging my heart around”. Petty didn’t say he had a personal attachment to the song, only that it was too good. But, I think he did feel it had the mirror effect on his first wife, Jane Benyo. He was only 17 when they met.

I am HIV posivtive and there are parts of the song that make me feel that sadness it brings me every day....I guess looking back at the mistake I made. but I know it's about a lover trying to think of what her new Lover is like to her and why he is a better man. And everything you've dreamed of
    Yeah you're the Dark Angel
It don't show when you break up
And I'm the one who oughta' know
I'm the one left in the dust
    Yeah I'm the broken-hearted fool
    Who was never quite enough
I'm an insider, I been burned by the fire
And I've had to live with some hard promises
I've crawled through the briars, I'm an insider
    It's a circle of deception
    It's a hall of strangers
    It's a cage without a key
    You can feel the danger
And I'm the one who oughta' know
I'm the one you couldn't trust
    I'm the lonely silent one
I'm the one left in the dust
    (Chorus)
    I'll bet you're his masterpiece
    I'll bet you're his self-control
    Yeah you'll become his legacy
His quiet world of white and gold
And I'm the one who oughta know

@@robbybobbybobirwin You're right. She does this when she harmonizes. It looks like love though when she looks at Tom in this video. I think she did love him. There may even have been an affair, but she hasn't said so that I know of.
She's spoken about her relationships with other lovers who were famous musicians: Lindsey, of course, Mick Fleetwood, Don Henley, and Joe Walsh. I read an interview in which she said she loved Joe Walsh above all of them.
I'd love to know the full story of each relationship, because I'm such an admirer of hers. However, it has nothing to do with why I love her music and it's just curiosity. I have no expectation or right to more of her life story than she cares to share.
Back to your original point (sorry I digressed), there's a great YT video in which she and Sheryl Crow sing Strong Enough. They watch one another as she watched Tom Petty in this one. I think to harmonize perfectly.

I have see Stevie on stage look at Lindsey the same way at times they were hating each other. I think she can get lost in the moment of the song and for that moment, she probably did love who ever she was connecting with on stage.

Stevie asked Tom to write her a song but when they sang it the first time he took the lead and they both knew he had to keep it for himself. He had already written Stop Dragging My Heart Around and gave it to her instead. From this point forward she was smitten and wanted to be a Heartbreaker but they always told her no girls allowed. I think it took 25 years for her to get the honorary title. Tom would be so touched that she invited Mike C to join FM. I imagine it was a very welcome diversion for him.

Oh no, it was not like that at all. When they first got together it was through an outside source wanting them to make music together. She was critical of Tom because she was in love with Buckingham. She made some comment about Tom’s guitar playing not being good enough or some crap. That pissed Tom off. They make good music together, but it wasn’t all a bed of roses. I remember the interviews back then, they were both on top of the game but Stevie was looking for another place to get away from Buckingham.

Hey younguns! She wasn't the only one in love with that man. I've been in love with him since the first time I heard "Breakdown". I bought the album the next day and I've bought every one since. He grew up not too far from where I live now. "in love" might be an exaggeration but I surely love his voice and his songs.

Such a brilliant analogy of things left unsaid.. Brilliant Mr. Pettty..
    It's a cage without a key
    You can feel the danger
And I'm the one who oughta know
I'm the one you couldn't trust
    I'm the lonely silent one
I'm the one left in the dust

That's a beautiful song! My mother turned me onto it a few years back. She's passed since and I love to listen and think about her. She always played music in the house and I'll always be grateful to her for that! I love you Ma! I'll miss you forever. I know our relationship suffered due to my addiction and mental health issues. I'm just so grateful I was clean when you move onto heaven and I'm still clean to this day and that's largely because of your support. I'm rambling now but just know I've always loved and respected you the most! I will see you again on the other side. My greatest love always. Thank you!
