  • Full Moon didn't always churn out movies where the low budget was quite so obvious. Back in the day, they sought to stretch their budgets as far as they could go. That brings us to the start of one of Full Moon's most prolific properties, Puppet Master.
While there are like.. 14, or 15 movies by now, the original came out in 1989 as your standard Full Moon direct to VHS production. You don't have to go all out in these affairs, it's about dolls coming to life and causing a horror movie to happen, but you might be surprised just how deep the lore goes in the first outing alone...
...you also might be surprised that it ever spawned any sequel, let alone so many.

The puppetmaster series is best in the entries where the puppets are fighting Nazis - or demons. They rewrite the backstory so much it gets hard to follow

Yeah I once watched a bunch of them and saw three different origin stories for how they were brought to life. One being a syrum from the brain another was blood magic personally my favorite one was the elixer of life used to make them move in world war 2 nazi germany. Atleast I think thats what it was. It was a different take on the syrum idea only this time it didnt require brain fluid to be made it was made by some other means. Its been awhile since I saw it.

Was on ammo dump guard duty in the Army. Sergeant asked what movies we wanted him to rent for us to watch that night. I said Puppet Masters, meaning the alien invasion one. He came back with this. We had a hell of a good time laughing at this delightfully silly movie.

Had a simmilar experience with another movie. Family were having a horror movie night one Halloween, I suggest American Werewolf in London, what my Dad came back with was A Werewolf in England. Shit was B Movie comedy gold and kind of impressive at some points even though it was obviously low budget.

Likewise, you can say what you want but they actually did do an amazing job at making an actually entertaining horror movie with such a limited budget ( a reported $400,000 ). Still hard to believe this series has continued to thrive through sequels by the David DeCoteau, the director of *A Talking Cat!?!* I do agree the movie is rough in many regards, but the puppets are still very creative, with their setting and premise at a creepy rundown hotel being very reminiscent of The Shining. Full Moon hasn't disappointed me yet after watching flicks like Subspecies, Doctor Mordrid, Dragonworld, and The Gingeread Man, feeling like the more successful mockbuster company than the Asylum. I have this entire franchise (all 12 movies, including the spin-off film Blade:The Iron Cross) on HD Blu-Ray (all digitally restored and remastered) in a limited edition collectible trunk (made to look like André Toulon's trunk from the movies).
Me and my girlfriend watched the entire series recently (a re-watch for me and a 1st time watch for her). She liked most of the films and a few of the puppets are her favorites (they are Blade, Jester, Tunneler, Pinhead & Six-Shooter...she really doesn't like Leach Woman though 😝). She (as well as I) can't wait for the upcoming spin-off film 'Doctor Death' (based off of the puppets from Retro Puppet Master - the 7th film in the series)....

The 2nd Puppetmaster freaked me out as a kid. Watching it now, and seeing all the cable they used to move the puppets, or in some cases just flat out throw them at actors. The imagination of a child.

Now we're all waiting for the ultimate sequel: Puppetmaster X
In a non-descript year sometime in the near future, all puppets are for real definitely destroyed. But in the far, far future, Earth has become uninhabitable and mankind has sought refuge on other planets. An expedition to Earth finds a pomeranian in pristine condition, who has somehow survived everything... for a very long time.
They take the dog with them to space, where the pomeranian uses Ancient Egyptian Magic to give life to some space junk and wreak havoc on the ship.

Decker, you're really good at longform summaries of movie plots! I reckon you have what it takes to maybe even go into reviewing one day.

I've always had a soft spot for the Puppet Master series. My best friend's growing up (and still to this day) father owned a video store as a side business so growing up he pretty much had full access to the store lol. Saw many age inappropriate movie lmao
