    I am subscribed to several reptile channels, and have never left a comment on any of them. I have watched many videos on leopard tortoise's (my fav reptile of all) . Came across you first and only video ever seen of yours, anyway have to tell you I found your leopard tortoise video the most educational of them all and just subscribed. I know this came up as my husband (Larry Frank) but my name is Kara and I am the reptile lover in my family. Thank you so much for the video.

    I have one. Great guy. Eats mainly lettuce and loves morning Glory leaves. But he doesn't like sunlight much. Any thoughts?

    • @theturtletube9702
      @theturtletube9702  5 років тому +2

      Hi Kenneth, most tortoises will run and hide, especially when young or in a new environment. I don't know how old or how long you've had him. Giving him secure places to hide, smaller outside area, and hand feeding while in the sun might help. The older he becomes the less timid he will be.
      If he truly doesn't like natural sunlight it could be a medical problem. Turnip and mustard greens, dandelion, cactus pad, endive are examples of good food choices -iceberg and romaine lettuce aren't very beneficial for tortoises.
      That's my thought. hope it helps

      YummyYo, I did the same. High oxalates, not enough calcium, low humidity, runny nose syndrome and so forth. I'm not so overly cautious now. Congrates on the tortoises.

    Would vita sand be a good subtrate for my leopard tortoises enclosure?

    • @theturtletube9702
      @theturtletube9702  3 роки тому

      Leopard tortoises need a humid environment. I don't think vita sand would be a good substrate.
      I now use chemical free dirt from my yard, its not pretty to look at, but it works good.

    Thanks for the video.
    Where do you live? I'm in Canada and leopards (babckoki) babies cost 650$ cad!
    I'm looking to buy a baby leopard. I have a hard full of grass, dandelions, and weeds. Will a leopard eat all of that?
    Also, I noticed from videos that leopards have much taller shells compared to Herman's. Your shell looks pretty good, not much pyramiding.

    • @theturtletube9702
      @theturtletube9702  4 роки тому +1

      MrFuturehistory I’m in the southern U.S. Babcocki babies run 80-150$ here, larger ones 700$ and up. If your yard has tortoise friendly weeds and grass it should be good. Keep the tortoise warm, humid and healthy it’ll live a long time. thanks Mr

    Is she a northern or southern Leopard tortoise? Can both subspecies swim?

    • @theturtletube9702
      @theturtletube9702  4 роки тому +1

      Hey Abdulaziz Rex, she is a northern Leopard tortoise. I can't say for certain but the southern subspecies can probably swim just the same.
      The information on the subject is conflicting.
      I read an article today that tortoises can't swim due to heavy bodies and elephant like legs.
      (Elephants can swim too;) thanks Rex

    Why do leopard tortoise have varying shell colors and patterns with in the species?

    • @theturtletube9702
      @theturtletube9702  4 роки тому +1

      I think diet, locale, and the environment would affect the shell a small amount. Genetics would be the largest determining factor. A litter of hamsters have different colors from one another, yet they are from the same parents. If you observe close enough most same species of insects don't look identical. Thanks Pipoy Pam.

    1:11 Both “subspecies” of S. Pardalis are actually from Southern Africa, there are none up North except for parts of the Northeast (e.g., Ethiopia). I put subspecies in quotes because there is a lot of debate as to whether there really are subspecies - the most popular consensus right now is “no” (but it hasn’t officially been decided). This is in part because there is no clear locality between the two groups- they more or less have the same geographical distribution and habitat.

      Donna Nelson Hi Donna, I’m not 100% sure she’s a female. Her bottom shell (plastron) is flat, notch around her tail is oval, short tail, never flashed hemipenes. Whether all indicators are myth or not that’s what I’m basing it on. Plus she has sparkly eyes (joke). Thanks for watching.
