....IT WAS IN!!! The NHL needed Tampa to win the Stanley Cup, not Canada.... the most overlooked Stanley Cup final!!!

Thank you so much for this analysis video, unfortunately I wasn't old enough to remember much from the '04 run, but from the stories I've heard it must've been a time to be alive with the city being in such a hockey frenzy, and I finally found somebody with more info on the regular season that got the Flames to their first playoff berth in 8 years, since everyone just talks about the playoff run, and not how they got to where they were

Thanks for watching! Stoked that you enjoyed the video!
I have to give major props to the Calgary Public Library for giving Calgarians free online access to the complete digital collection of historical Calgary Herald newspapers.
Couldn't have made the video without access to the Herald's daily Flames coverage from way back in the early 2000s.

I was twenty at the time and my interest in the NHL was at its peak.
I was rooting for the Flames all playoffs long and being in Europe I was setting the vcr to record the playoff games on VHS tape in the middle of the nights as the games usually started around midnight or 1am.
I was rooting for the Flames because I liked tough, physical hockey and the Flames were the toughest and most active team when it came to fighting in 2003-04. Calgary had the most fights in the entire league that regular season and Tampa was down in 24th place in number of fights. Quite a big difference. Calgary also had the most fights during the playoffs, too. I so wished they could have won that Cup. It would have been something else.
Calgary had that old school feel to them with players like Oliwa and Simon taking care of the rough stuff and even helping out with the scoring during the playoffs, they combined for 7 goals during the playoffs (Oliwa 2 and Simon 5). And they had a tough captain in Iginla who dropped his gloves when it called for it. It was one of the best moments of the playoffs for me with Iginla and his C and Lecavalier with his A dropping the gloves and going at it. The Flames felt like an underdog team and that's always been my most liked type of teams.
I really liked their jerseys as well.
In the end both Calgary and Tampa scored 60 goals each during the 2003-04 playoffs,
and in the finals Calgary outscored Tampa 14-13. But it wasn't enough. It was damn close though. And I was happy for Tampa and their guys, I really liked Andreychuk, Fedotenko and Khabibulin and what they did that playoffs. They deserved it, but I wanted Calgary to win it.
I still think about this series every now and then.

    Thank you so much
Haven't heard that "Yeah Baby!" In so long, goose bumps. Mr. Whalen RIP
We might have lost but we still celebrated our beloved Flames. We partied like we won(we did😉) and we did it in style, unlike our friends on the coast a few years later

As a Canucks fan that was really tough losing to the Flames in Game 7 of the first round. That goal was in and the Flames got robbed a cup!

I was rooting for the Calgary Flames to win the 2004 Stanley Cup finals.
Sadly that was not to be. And the Flames have not since then made it back to the finals while the Lightning have made it 3 times and won 2 of them.

IT! WAS! IN!!!!!!! I will argue that until the day I die. On my headstone when I'm buried it'll say "Calgary 2004: it was in"

My thoughts on it is that even if it was in the Calgary Flames didn’t “deserve” to win that cup. Because all teams, even champions have moments where luck doesn’t go there way, and you know what they still find a way to win.
They had an entire two overtime’s to score in that game six, and they did not score. They had an entire game 7 to win the series and they stunk for the first two periods and only managed to muster up one goal late in the third to keep it interesting. Calgary had their opportunity’s to win, and they blew it. Let’s not forget this team also got shutout on home ice in game four of this series to. If they manage to play good that game they win the series in five games.
There is no “this team deserved to win the cup but they didn’t” they either deserved it or they didn’t. It’s why we play series people, Tampa was the better team and they played like it when it mattered most.

I still hate the Tampa Bay as per today no matter what. This Stanley Cup which they play boring neutral zone trap and also how Tampa Bay won the Stanley Cup in Covid Era using the LTIR Piss me off.

I mean the "Kane Loophole" could have been changed but nothing came of it. After Kane was injured and placed on LTIR , Antoine Vermette, Kimmo Timonen, and Andrew Desjardins were signed with what was Kane's cap hit. Kane then came back for the First round and those players helped the Blackhawks win the Cup against the Lightning of all teams. The Lightning did what was done against them and was perfectly legal. Gaborik and Nilsson who were also on LTIR for the Bolts were traded to the Bolts to offload the cap hit of Paquette and Coburn. The league could have changed the rules back then and still they haven't changed the rules. "Don't hate the player hate the Game"
