The problem is, even after apologies, what was said and heard cannot be unsaid or unheard. The fact is they said those things. Why on earth is the sister doubling down?! This girl offers you FREE babysitting and you do nothing but insult her?!

I think, OPs girlfriend is a genuinely nice and caring person and has shown much affection and consideration for OP's family. They probably don't have a legit reason to hate her. They are being confronted with an actual caring, generous and happy person, and they're probably bitter and jealous. That's why they can't stand her, even though they benefitted from knowing her.

Some people double down because they're embarrassed. She insists her actions were justified, and that Sammy is the problem. To apologize is to admit she's wrong, and she's not willing to do that. Everyone else, even if they didn't believe they were wrong, knew they had to apologize to keep the peace. And they may have realized that even if their feelings were justified, their actions weren't.

    • @Davtwan
      @Davtwan 3 роки тому +23

Indeed, apologies are only the first step. They still have a long way to go to mend the relationship. And even then, there’s always the possibility OP will never want them back forever no matter what they do. In that case, they’re just going to have to cut their losses, take the life lesson, and move on with regrets.
That sister can take a flying leap into the dumpster though. Redemption is apparently “too good” for her.

Apart from the father, I wouldn't trust any of their apologies as sincere. Mom can cry all the crocodile tears she likes, but what she's really scared of is losing OP. Brother is scared for his job. Fear is not a great motivator for genuine change, since fear eventually fades. After everything Sammy's done for the beyotch sister, and she's still doubling-down, she doesn't deserve a second chance. Bet she'll suddenly be full of phony apologies once she's uninvited from the wedding!
But it's not up to Sammy if OP cuts ties with his family. He has to make that call, for his own reasons.

I have parents that didn't approve of my choice of a wife either.
Dad still "reminds" me of my "mistake" that I "have to live with" from time to time.
#Irony - a few years back, in a rare visit where my wife and he were talking, he was being overly critical about love and how there's more to life, blah blah. My wife had enough and asked him: "so who did YOU let get away?" His expression was that of a kid who got caught with the hand in the cookie jar, I kid you not.
So yeah, projecting shortcomings is apparently more common than one might think. The idea that my dad might be jealous of my relationship with my wife explains a lot of his behavior. Unlike OP, my parents never properly reconciled with my wife - which is a big reason why we limit contact.
OP seems to already be in a better position with his family, even if some of it isn't fully sincere. At least they, short of the one sister, owned up to their gaffe. He and Sammy will probably work out just fine.

If I were a betting man, when the holdout sister finds out it's a destination wedding and she finds out that she's not invited, she going to suddenly change her tune and make nice and weasel an invitation and accomodations out of OP and his future wife. If that fails, she will put pressure on the parents to force OP to allow her and kids to come. Should that fail, she is going to do everything she can to sabotage the wedding and may resort to blackmailed the family by not letting them see her kids. She strikes me as that kind of vicious individual.

That seems to be the natural progression of that situation, yes. Sister not only believes her actions were justified, but that Sammy is the issue. This is a rough one. You thought they liked her before you caught them talking about her. Even if they apologize it doesn’t mean that they aren’t still talking about her. The fact that they haven’t immediately apologized tells me they don’t mean it. You’re happy and they can’t be happy for you. That alone is awful.

It sounds like everything has worked out the best way for OP and Sammy. Imagine if she hadn't heard them bitching about her that evening, and instead heard them 3 years and a kid or two later! Then she would have heard them trashing her ability as a mother as well, and that would have hurt much more. As for the sister who doubled down and refused to apologize? Screw her. But next Christmas, tell Mom and Dad, "It's our turn this year, tell Sis she's not invited." And refuse to compromise on that one.

    1. If they are that bold when the person isn't there, he's heard then talk about others with him. Honestly there's something he's not telling. Like how often does she say she's declining an invite and then shows up? Or does it run in reverse where she says she'll show and then doesn't? Why do they think he's shooting low to avoid being hurt? That's not just aimed at her, but at him not coping and being afraid of being hurt again. There are a lot of the comments that were aimed at him. The fact they feared her lashing out at work is rather concerning. Seems like for just his girlfriend, she holds power over them in some way that is breeding resentment.

    Oh... This hit home.
-Please forgive me for any mistakes. English isn't my first language
I can relate since I was / I am in a similar situation. Just that we married now, had a son and a second is on the way. My problem weren't his parents. They are great. The condescending attitude came from the sisters. My husband has five siblings, one brother and four sisters. They all have always been close. Out of the four sisters the three youngest have shown a supercilious attitude towards me since day one. I think it has to do with two things. One, I was the first serious relationship any of the siblings had and I think those three saw me as an intruder. Being a close family specially those three ganged up but always kept a carefully polished "polite" front (you could tell tho) so they couldn't be called out on that. Second, I come from a screwed up family, my social skills were not that good (they still aren't) and the definition of a doormat. I still avoid confrontation since I am not able to express my feelings properly. Usually I bottle them up until I feel the need to just cut ties (people usually make a surprised Pikachu face by that point and then I am the a*hole to dare and treat them like that). I tried for many, many years to make them open up to me, to gain their affection and trust. When I visited their home I tried to be as less a burden as possible, never entered an argument, bought gifts for Christmas for everyone, even when as a student money was very tight - at some point I handmade gifts, so since I was in the picture they always got a present from me and I helped with everything I could. But it was useless. I NEVER got a present back (maybe a chocolate bar or something) and never had help offered for anything. Any discussion I might have had with my husband, then boyfriend, in ear reach of any those three sisters ended up having all three against me, even if I was in the right. The last straw was the wedding, where I had the *glorious* idea to make those three my bridesmaids as a last effort on my side. Unnecessary to say it was a mistake. It was a burden for them, they complained about having to by the same dress. Which was a lie, they could buy whatever they wanted, I just would have liked if they had one thing in common, so they could use it again but that wasn't good enough, because they "don't use anything else than a long dress at weddings and not in private and on top of that wearing the "same" dress (still insisting) would take away their personalities". They didn't help with anything, didn't plan anything and at the wedding day they were too busy getting each other dolled up. No one helped me, no pictures, nada. Finally a switch went off. I don't care anymore. I have my own family now and they can sick it were the sun doesn't shine. They actually are expecting to become a godmothers to my children. Only over my dead body.
Till this day they didn't apologize or even admit they had a crappy attitude. They behave like they were angels all along. Well, we moved to a different country and I only have contact so my children know their aunts. Since I never was given the opportunity to get to know any of my extended family, I know how that sucks and I don't want that for my kids. But I don't call for anything else and even those calls I keep up for my son are on my terms. Screw them. They will never change.
    Sorry for the long rant.

The wedding, the sister’s reaction to the engagement, wedding, etc. Was she invited? Why would she be so hateful (for that matter, why were they all so hateful, even the dude who had a good job due to her influence in the company), and why double down after her true feelings became known to OP and fiancée? Why, if it is true and he accepts it and doesn't care about it, why shouldn't he say "she is fat and I love her for/despite it"? Fat isn't a bad word, we need to stop trying to police speech, otherwise we'll end up with barely any "good" words that can be spoken. It is how people treat someone because of their size, skin color, sexual orientation, etc. that is good or bad. Stop letting mere words have so much power, they are simply vibrations of the air, and shapes on a screen/paper, it is the intent behind those words that should matter.

I think apologies are for actions and do have to come along with honest effort to change a behaviour or make up for it. They're not for words and opinions however.. I mean, will the opinions or meanings behind the words change? I doubt it.
An apology for what they said will not change their opinions on th GF nor the GF knowing about them.
Even if they truly try to see GF in a different light und change their opinions, how will OP and GF know? When they say they love and respect her now? How can they proof it's what's truly in their heart?

I went through something similar when my wife and I first started dating. My older sister seemed to be kind of standoffish and I think it was because her free handyman was now busy. Both her and my mother were difficult about the wedding cuz we wanted something small and simple my sister wanted us to go to Vegas or Hawaii or some bullshit like that, and my mom was like well I don't know if I can make it on that date or this date mom has been retired for years. So we went to the courthouse wedding and just by ourselves and we've pretty much gone very limited contact with my family.

Story 1: The women in OP's family are toxic. How can they be so hung up on her physical appearance? Maybe they've been like this behind OP's back with all his exes. Sammy thought the family liked her but have just been using her to; clean, brings food and babysitting. So why don't they apologise to her face? Cowards and condescending b****es. Why am I anticipating a "I'm sorry you feel that way." in the near future and OP going low-no contact. I can't help wondering if the women in the family feel threatened by a new woman entering the family because she wasn't there from the beginning ore entirely on their side. So mum turned around, good. Less for the sisters and brother. Treat your baby-sitter like dirt, say goodbye to the sitter.
