We adore this film and have watched it many times. Nicholson was never better. And it is ultimately about a "family" making a very difficult journey. It never gets old
One of Nicholson's greatest films. Often overlooked when people speak of his work. For me it's up there with The Shining, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and The Postman Always Rings Twice.
What a film. When a story is able to represent real characters and real public life then transform it into psychological and mythical play, the Last Detail is what you get. Very poignant in parts, will never forget this film
@ haha I meant it’s a story about the navy and its protocols and sensibility, and the city it’s located in comes through the story, and then there’s the psychological representation of characters and their interplay. It’s layered is all I was saying.
Hal Ashby is underrated--"Harold and Maude;" "The Last Detail;" "Shampoo;" "Bound for Glory;" "Coming Home;" and "Being There" is one hell of a run of consecutive films to make. See "The Last Detail" if you haven't, and if you like it, check out Ashby's other work too.
I agree but was absolutely delighted at this recommendation, just went in blind as I get to a point where I cant decide what to watch. Please keep them coming.

Saw it when it was released... brilliant... highly recommended...!!!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
a great film. The writing, the acting, and the directing, shows what you can do with a basic story.
And a shout-out to Carol Kane for her small yet memorable role!
Two small ones
I'd never heard of this film before and now I really want to see it. Thanks Mark and the BFI.
Please see it. It is wonderful.
See it! See it!

Not sure you understand what a play is but congrats on coming across as the ultimate pseudointellectual

@@ludwigwittgenstein2422 We all know anyone who has "Wittgenstein" as their screen name is the real pseudo-intellectual.
Loved this film ....saw it so long ago now it seems !
Yodelling in the Canyon, ever done that, Meadows?
"How can you have a hot dog without buns?"
"Well don't eat the f**king thing!" lol
"I'd like to drink a toast to Batman, Superman and the Human Torch." Indelible Jack Nicholson performance.
Need to see this!
The remaster from Indicator is excellent.
Brilliant film.
Give this man a beer

Total classic
Wonderful film.
superb film
Thankyou
You forgot to mention the dynamite performance from Otis Young as well, Mr Kermode!
I would say that it was part of the inspiration for my joining the Navy a few years later.
That's odd.
@@kylec2761 I don't think so.
Shame that Randy Quaid is now a lunatic. He was such a great actor
I really am a BADASS
You know that 80%/90% of films are not made by The USA right? Review some more of them please.

'Harold and Maude' erasure!!!
I don't doubt that Kermode is working towards a BFI intro for it. Has he done The Devils yet?
@@warlockofwordschannel7901 No, I meant he didn't mention it alongside Ashby's films in this video.
@@rowanc88you need to learn what erasure means
