Saw them this year in Brisbane. Sad their 2021 shows were delayed so long and Lexxi retired but man, what a show. Took my 3 brothers and only 1 had really heard of them before, it was a fucking awesome night
My best friend(from philly) , but lived in L.A. for 15 years, was roommates/friends with Darren the drummer for a few years. They are real musicians who had normal jobs and played in cover bands before metal skool/panther. They always made song paradies of 80's hair metal and things just jelled over the years to evolve into Panther. They are normal dudes who happen to be pro musicians with wives and kids. This is all an act based on them doing paradies of 80's hair bands. Darren and Ralph also did stand up comedy improv. Their basically comedians as well. Doing a combo of comedy and rock. They don't do drugs. They drink, but no more than the average joe. They are making fun of the 80's hair metal excess. They are comically/musically brilliant. But back home they are regular boring people. They are an act and a great one!
These guys are so spot on its scary. I am 54 years old, and in my 20's, I was a lead singer of a 80's metal group based out of Texas. We opened shows for a handful of those types of groups....like Ratt, Heavy Pettin, Wendy O Williams, Dokken, Legs Diamond and Blackfoot. Many of them were just as we see in Steel Panther videos. The 80's was a great time for metal/rock music....it became mainstream and you could hear it everywhere from rock stations to top 40 stations....it dominated the record charts....it was a great time...to bad grunge killed it. It is so unfortunate that great musicians of their caliber can't make it as a legitimate musical force instead of having to go the parody route. But at least they still get to play the music they obviously love unlike many rock musicians who had to transition into country music in order to try and make a living....it's so sad. There is no longer an outlet for the next rock guitar genius. I am so glad I was there...on the front lines during the greatest years for metal music.....we will never see it like that again.
