I also think it's an amazing song, but apparently the professionals have never thought radio would like it. Maybe not in the bro-country days when Ronnie recorded it, but I think it would have a good shot at being a hit now.
See what most people don't understand is that Chris has talents of many different facets, playing, singing, writing but it is his ability to bring us into the music that has made him as successful as he is! It is his ability to be a VERY good story teller! Being able to make you think he is singing a song that was written just for you and your situation, or to make you feel something so deeply you break into tears and even the ability to captivate you to the point you feel sorry for him because you just know he is singing about his troubles. That my friends is a man who knows how to tell a story, and he just happens to be able to sing and play it way better than he can tell it!
Very few can do it at his level. Jason Isbell also has that innate ability. I hold Isbell and Stapleton at such a greater level than anyone in the Nashville/extended Nashville scene. They truly can tell the story. Another great one is if you can find/listen to Wendell Mobley's version of "There goes my life". He wrote that song (which Kenny Chesney recorded). Mobley's version is so much better, especially since he lived it.
