What if dick realized eventually batman would need another robin so changed it ig ofc only saying this if the suit wasn't changed or something.🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨 I did watch all the way through
Its pretty simple. Batman had that red pants costume made for Dick out of sympathy due to the fact that his OG costume being to reminiscent of the Grayson family and his aerialists parents in particular who lets not forget were slaughtered right before his eyes. After much mediation and comming on terms with his sorrow, Dick decided that he should honor his parents and embraced the green on his sleeves but decided to keep the pants and have them be green as well. Now Bruce keeps that red and black suit Dick might've only used a couple of times on his Batcave because its the costume of the Robin he wanted to raise and not the one who abandoned him. The fact that the TAS suit is destroyed on Batgirls dream seems to indicate that not only Batman but also Barbara felt betrayed by Dick with his departure. And there you go, that's my explanation.
I’d like to think Tim’s suit was a leftover prototype/spare suit that was put on display because Dick took one of the only other red and green suits that was kept in the cave when he quit
@@jonbrewer297 What if the red suit IS his original suit, but off-panel we see him ask for it in red and green like his family wore, since initially for him it was about vengeance. That satisfies it being his original costume but also unworn.
@@TheLikenessOfNormal I do love that idea. The classic suit would be the one he chose to wear on his first few missions and was just his circus outfit slightly modified, the red one would be the one Bruce made him once he accepted him as his sidekick because the circus one was too obviously being wear by "a flying Grayson", and the TAS suit would be a mix of the two to symbolize both his adoptive parent (design of the red suit) and his biological parents (colour of the circus suit).
I really like how they implemented the red and black suit in the main DC prime earth continuity. Tim changed his colors from red & green to red & black to honor Superboy who died in Infinite Crisis. “They were his colors.”
@@elplebeuchiha1996I honestly prefer Dick and Jason to wear green and red and Tim to wear black and red. Plus it can be a nice symbolic change of Robin starting over since Dick left Bruce on a bad note and Jason died
@@night6724 Agreed. Seeing them give Tim’s red and black suit to Dick in the Young Justice cartoon doesn’t feel right to me. Those were Conner’s colors, and Tim wore them to honor him and their bond. Dick has nothing to do with that, so I would’ve preferred for him to have green included in his suit. Actually, I would’ve preferred for them to just use Tim from the start since Young Justice is meant to be his thing and not Dick’s who already has the Teen Titans, but I digress.
I think the rectangles on the gloves of some of the robin costumes are supposed to represent the scales on the legs of birds, I find it to be a simple yet clever design choice.
This video reminded me that, when I was a kid, I read about the Death in the Family storyline on Wikipedia and then became ADAMANT that there were episodes of BTAS/TNBA with Jason and that I needed them
@@briansmith48 Let’s be real they both were thinking of Conner the whole time during that lol (I love Tim and Cassie as friends but that whole thing was completely grief-fueled for both of them) Even Conner himself wasn’t mad when they eventually told him about it, he completely understood.
This is kind of the way I always saw it was Dick had the classic comics costume, then had a “I need pants” moment so that’s where the red suit comes in then when he got a bit older had a “I miss green” moment. It’s possible that Tim didn’t really see footage of Robin until Dick was wearing the red suit so for *him* that’s the “real” Robin suit.
Yeah no sht it was sleeker. Obviously less color will look cooler. But colorful is more pleasing to look at. But yeah yall obviously love The Winter Soldier movie Cap suit. Darker and no colors. The art style is also why Tim drake's suit works. But yeah everyone wants superhero suits to have no color.
I reference it all the time on the pod! Someone told me recently it doesn't hold up as an adult, and now I can't decide if I wanna rewatch it or not...
The commentary for Over the Edge posed the same question of who changed Barbara into the hospital gown. The conclusion the commenters drew was “Alfred did it but he closed his eyes”
Great job giving us 80's babies a reason to hold on to our sanity! I never could reckon with the fact that Tim Drake was barely 5 feet tall and had a perfectly sized Robin suit waiting for him! I mean, just imagine if BTAS had produced a follow-up storyline after ROBIN'S RECKONING that showed Dick Grayson training with Bruce and receiving THIS kid sized outfit as his first TRUE Robin suit. Just a shame that some great subplots never got turned into full episodes. One can always dream...😂❤
I always ASSumed it was A) different artstyle, like how Batman doesn't have oval, has entirely different face with pointy elf - comics Black Adam like ears and pouches in his belt B) we saw Robin in the very end in previous version, and this costume belonged when Dick had comics style classic Bob Kane's c curls and classic height Real attack on MY sanity was when I, THE kid that grew up with BTAS and Batman Forever and Batman and Robin notions, saw for the first time Adam West show based cartoon and then actual comics about Dick and Jason Robin. Took REALLY long time of self gaslight to convince me about Robin's classic costume + watching Ninja Scrolls in which based ninjas had similar exposed legs + Russian sambo where guys also have same exposed legs + accept that only Bob Kane and his ghosts ACTUALLY understood the assignment and the WHY of this costume, and how it should be drawn, and not everyone else who drew Robin ever since up until costume change into the Nightwing and until 90s cartoon and movie completely put pants on Robin. Until Zack Snyder , who UNDERSTANDS the Why of the Robin costume, along with Wilkinson modernized pants-less Robin suit, which looks absolutely awesome on cosplayers.
Yup Dick being a few years older then Tim fits this, it’s a Captain America/ US agent situation where a retired alternative costume was repurposed by another character
I would like a video depicting the costume change for Barbara from the blue and grey in BTAS to the black and yellow in TNBA and the theories that come with it.
My only thing was reading the Jason Todd dcau comic during one of the flashbacks with Jason being Robin, Barbara has a different suit. It has an all black body design like TNBA but it's cowl, boots, gloves, and cape are the same blue from BTAS. It looks good, but kinda weird no one ever mentions it
The grey and blue was just so ugly almost everyone’s outfit was ugly in the original show I don’t know why only Batman’s outfit was ok but it looked sleeker in the new show
Did Dick ever actually return his Robin suit? He’s wearing it when he quits & he and Bruce weren’t really speaking for a while, so it’s possible that by the time Tim joins up, Dick still has his BTAS suit which is why it’s an older version of the suit in the cave that Tim steals. Bruce still wanted to honor Dick, but didn’t want to be like an ex asking for his stuff back.
Great video! Aside from the change from green to black, the way the trunks match the gloves, boots, and sleeves is similar to the original suit, so I think it could be a suit Dick wore sometime between the Batman Adventures flashback and BTAS, as a transition into his pants-wearing phase.
My theory: It seems the Tim Drakes Robin-suit was made to look different so that viewers can have a visual cue that this (tim drake) is a different person/robin than was previously behind the mask as Robin before. It's also possible that when the Robin suit is introduced the second time (appearing red/black), it is actually in a slightly parallel timeline where that always was the robin-suit. Similar to how Batman forever is a sequel to Batman-Returns, but takes place in a slightly parallel timeline according to the new Flash film that brings back Keaton.
A video on the Justice Lord suits could be cool. Like what were the potential in-universe reasons for each individual swap and if hose costumes have any hidden references/meanings.
It’s funny that BTAS is darker and more mature than Brave and The Bold but Brave and the Bold has the nuts to show off the Waynes being shot down in cold blood
If I remember correctly, it was something that was censored back then. Some companies were more strict about it than others. Censorship is always changing though cause of laws and stuff.
Speaking of "A Death in the Family," I've always found pretty fascinating the alternate page the authors made in case fans voted for Jason to live, which shows a blissful Batman holding Jason's body while yelling, "He's alive! Thank God!" I wonder how the Batman stories would have continued from that point if that page was the one used at the end. Anyway, it was colored and featured in "Batman Annual 25", the special issue that tells how Jason was revived, as "the reality that should have been", according to the narrator. They should have definitely adapted it for the interactive film
I know so little about Jason Todd, but wasn't he hated by the fans because he was "edgy" to the point of being unlikable? Not saying that "justifies" voting to have him killed off, but I do wonder if it would've harmed the ongoing story by driving more people away, if he truly was that unpopular. Tim's always been my favorite Robin, ever since I learned about him in the animated series. I like his comics origin (what I know of it) even better than his merged-with-Todd animated backstory, but his attitude and personality always were more fun to me. That said, the Young Justice version of Drake vs. Grayson felt...swapped, with the early season Robin having the impish computer genius quality and the later season Robin having this "I'm trying to be as serious as Batman" thing going on.
That always seemed really weird to me. Like life isn't a binary thing where you're either 100% okay or 100% dead... you _can_ be those things; but after a battle, _any_ battle, you'll likely be somewhere in between. If he's dead, he's dead... comics have a million ways to undo that, but there's no reason the characters should be aware of it. If he was alive, Batman shouldn't be exclaiming it to the Heavens, he should be saying something like, "Don't worry Jason, we'll patch you up." or something like that. I mean, I know it's more 'cinematic' this way, but it's still weird. The next few hours/days will be critical for him, and you don't really have time to confirm to the readers that they saved Twink-erbelle with their phone calls.
@@Wendy_O._Koopa Keep in mind that a chikd like Jason literaly survived a brutal beating and an explosion, so it's not surprising that even a really serious guy like Batman reacted as if he just saw a miracle. Also, Batman doesn't waste time to take Jason to the Hospital as soon as he exclaims the happiness
Supposedly the vote for Jason being killed off was largely due to one person setting up his computer to repeatedly vote for Jason's death. That would highly suggest that that person had an intense hatred for Jason. Only way that could have work is if he also set it up so that each time it voted it was a different as a different individual
@@segevstormlord3713jason was hated at the time because he was a carbon copy of dick but just edgier. The solution to the problem if he lived would have just been fleshing out his character same as they did now by making him edgier. Hell they could have just gave him tims personality since he didnt exist yet
Looking at Dick's emotional state and going off of his age, it's quite possible the order of suits went like this- Being a very young child introduced to the 'cool' world of crime fighting dick had his very first suit with no pants. As he got older, possibly to imitate Batman or just from being older and outgrowing the no pants and pixie boots, he got the black and red suit. Once he started to grow into the Dick Grayson we see in the show, he got his final suit. A blend of both his original suit and second suit. Having the black cape back, boots, and pants while also having a lighter and brighter tone.
@@Batman-lg2zj If you are referring to the one from the comics, then yes, I know that. It was given to Jason originally by the Batman of Earth-51 in the comic Countdown #14. Bruce explained to new-earth Jason he had planned to give it to his Jason so he was fully prepared for the war on crime but never got the chance as his Jason was killed by the Joker.
@@JunTekuTheEngima Yep! and it looks great too. That suit is inspired by Tim's in the comics. Tim changed his to honor Connor after he died. Also, that is an entirely different show than the one I talked about in my original comment, I was talking about Batman the animated series.
I figured back when that episode of nightwing quit being Robin episode originally, and figured that red suit might have been one Grayson wore back when he was a kid too anyway💁🏻♂.
At this point is so funny how the Tim Drakes Robin suits from the comics have more animated movie appearances than his owner Tim Drake. Apart from DCAU, Young Justices, and some videogames and Lego products, I can see how DC always forgot Tim Drake (and the others Robins)
24:05 I have always found this cover pretty underrated. It's pretty cool to see Robin adopting a more menacing pose, even resembling a Vampire, instead of just acting as the goofy comic relief
@@dcauwatchtowerI want to ask you, is it true that Wonder Woman's age is 18? How is it possible if Hades created her clay three thousand years ago? And if that's his age, in your opinion, does it ruin Diana and Bruce's relationship?
Ok, I have a bit of head-cannon to this. The first suit he wore "as robin" wasn't his first "robin suit". The suits design is based off his Flying Graysons suit. The suit without pants. . . what if that's NOT a robin suit. What if that's the Flying Graysons suit? The one he had in the circus. That would mean the suit that came after that would be the first OFFICIAL robin suit. And if it's the first robin suit that bruce made was the red one, then that's why he's more found of it over the Flying Grayson suit despite the FG suit coming first. After that, as dick got older. Bruce made another suit on dicks birthday to better pay omage to the boys parents. This is when it was made green.
I mean given the Kenner toyline has multiple different colored action figures, it’s easy to just accept that Batman and Robin have different outfits for different situations. Even if some of those color schemes are ghastly. I do like that the Adventures Continue comics add Dick’s red and green suit to the row of costume tubes.
That is a good point. So instead of "It's the real Robin suit" he should have said "Hey, it's the Night Patrol Robin suit!" and everyone would look at him like he was nuts because in-universe that would just be the nickname given to it by hero fans, and quite possibly made into actual action figures.
A mayhaps explanation: Tim Drake *did* find Richard Grayson's costume 'with a different lens'. But wore his own costume afterwards (justified by Jason Todd's mayhaps story where *he* stole Richard Grayson's costume, and then got his own afterwards. And that this *different lens* costume clarification thing was never actually confirmed because it's a kids show for goodness sake! (Also coz like, if you colour Tim's costume one way for one episode, then he gets a new costume with new colours the next, not only is that extra designs and stuff, but also you'll get a bunch of genius' asking 'waaait, they're wearing different costumes... Are they different people...?')
New to DC in general, and this is really quite interesting. Love the way people narratively explain artistic choices, artistically depict narrative choices, and all that. This Robin outfit is NICE though.
You know I just remember seeing this as a kid and I was like why does Robin look SO different? He's a kid now? I didn't read the comics and had no clue who Tim Drake was, I just knew this guy wasn't Dick Grayson. I literally didn't know it was Tim Drake until I learned of his existence from the comics a few years ago. Even after I saw ROTJ it was like "oh this Robin's name is Tim" but since I didn't know Tim Drake was a thing it meant nothing to me. I feel dumb having typed all this out now...anyway great video keep up the great work guys!
Old memories, but the way I explained it at the time was that Robin had two suits. One when he was a kid (the black and red) which was before the era of BTAS, and the one he wore as a teenager (red and green) which we saw in BTAS. Obviously he'd have to get a new suit at some point because he would have grown out of the original one.
And here I thought the only way I’d get to watch someone talk about Robin costumes for half an hour is if I could stand to use a mirror for that long 😌❤️
Also, assuming Barbara's dream Batcave layout is correct, it would stand to reason that Bruce shoved the BTAS Robin costume back aways due to it being the one Dick wore when he quit. To the contrary, the red and black one represents a more wholly positive time, where he and Dick were the Dynamic Duo. Not for nothing, but, if I were Batman, I probably wouldn't want to remember that sucker punch, either! Lol.
I never even noticed that the color scheme went from green to Black. Being I was born in the 80s the 90s cartoons was what I lived on and really miss all of them so watching this video and catching another channel that plays retro cartoons takes me back to my Saturday mornings
Said it once I'm going to say it here too. it's a butterfly effect caused by every time they time travel in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited
You know I always wondered had Tim not been tortured by the Joker into Joker Jr and had kept being Robin do you think he would have eventually became his own identity and would have became Red Robin similar to his comic counterpart? Like seriously imagine a dcau version of Red Robin with his iconic bo staff and weird bird winged cape. In fact I can see Tim getting the Redboard, the Redbird Car and his motorcycle from the comics.
My Personal Headcanon: while on a Justice League mission, Bruce suffers his first heart attack. During his convalescence, Tim Drake joins the League as Red Robin with Superman’s knowledge but without telling Bruce, as a means of dealing with his trauma following his torture / killing of Joker. Red Robin successfully completes at least 3 League missions before Bruce returns as Batman, accompanied by Power Girl (aka Tea Hamilton, aka Galatea from Project Cadmus who’s honoring her late father’s wishes by joining the League). Both Tim and Tea leave the League upon Bruce’s return, both having successfully dealt with their personal issues, and it’s Tea we see with the elderly Tim in BB:RotJ.
In this case, it would make sense for the people at large, who don't know their real names or backstories (and have not noticed Bruce Wayne got a new ward at the same time Batman got a new Robin) would start referring to them as "old Robin and red Robin." and it's not hard to see him picking that for that reason. I don't know that there was ever a reason given in the comics other than 'it sounds kind of neat'
Fun Fact: When The New Batman Adventures was broadcast in places outside the US, specifically Latina America: A) The show always used the BTAS intro, as the show was never broadcast in a package alongside STAS (though the TNBA outro was used) B) The first episode was Sins of the Father instead of the Christmas episode.
I’ve been thinking of watching the entire DCAU because of your videos. I mostly just watched BTAS and Batman Beyond when I was a kid, so it’ll be fun to watch everything else finally.
My theory for Jokers eyes being black in TNBA is that Joker decided to wear contacts to make himself appear more menacing, but later ditched them by the time JL came around.
Here’s my two cents: I think the black and red suit is an earlier version of the original Robin suit. It appears to be smaller than Dick’s Robin suit so it could have been from an earlier point in time, when Dick was a young teen. I bet there were multiples of this red and black suit made to fit Dick as he grew up. That’s just my theory.
@@tigerlord9302 If you're talking about the "Batman the adventure continues" comics from resent years then the Robin your thinking about is Jason Todd, Tim Drake still has the red, black & yellow Robin suit but it's reveled that Jason existed and in flashbacks Jason is shown to have worn a similar suit with the red, green & yellow color scheme, the design for Jason's actually being a reference to a costume he briefly wore in the bronze age just before officially becoming the 2nd "Boy Wonder"
@@tigerlord9302 only other resent comics I can think of are the main universe one's where Tim has regressed back to being Robin again for some stupid reason dispit the fact Damian Wayne is still Robin and despite the fact that there where multiple times where Tim says that he has made peace with the fact that he isn't Robin anymore and that he excepts that it's time for him to move on, like how Dick Grayson went from Robin to Nightwing but for some dumb reason all of that has been stripped away to the point that Tim might as well be a different character entirely ( at least he feels that way to me in resent years), as for the red, green & yellow costume Tim has currently it's in reference to the first Robin suit that he wore, the same one that Dick Grayson has in Batman the Animated series even though it originated with Tim
@@Kid_Spitfire I forgot the name but they’re taking place at random points in the DCAU, but are mostly based off TNBA. Dan Slottbis one of the writers.
I have some headcanon that might suit (pun intended) everything. What if the "true" color of the accents is actually a deep dark green, and it's just greatly lightened or darkened depending on the chosen style?
I would love an Aquaman and Mera costume DCAU explanation. I know there are at least 2 major changes but why are they so drastic for him where as the other heroes stay more consistent?
I always assumed the red suit was just year one Robin suit and we met Dick Grayson in Batman TAS 7 years into his run. Robin was 10 when he became Robin but Dick Grayson was 17-20 years of age in TAS
It does kind of seem intresting that the robin suit is the only suit changed for flashbacks. It might be a mix of wanting to seperate characters and needing to make a new model anyway.
I think a interesting video would be on how the Prototype suit from Superman:the animated series, could be the predecessor of the Batman beyond suit, since they’re both relatively sleek suits with enhanced agility, strength, rocket boots, paralysis fail safe system, HUD built into the lenses ect, I know there’s not a lot of in terms of evidence for it being true but I thought it was an interesting connection nonetheless
I assumed anything we saw in the DCAU could have led to the future tech. That’s what they did in JLU in the epilogue episode to explain Terry being Bruce’s genetic son. I’d think Wayne Enterprises would buy up companies that had tech that was too dangerous to be left unchecked to prevent any new similar villains. That suit was hyper advanced but then you see similar tech in JLU and Batman mainly funds the watchtower.
The Boy Wonder's comic origin actually referred to Robin Hood, especially as depicted in William Soare's art. There you got a bird-red tunic with lincoln-green highlights. So yeah...definitely wierd to see a Robin costume with no green.
I still like to think the red suit was Jason Todd’s and Batman doesn’t speak about Jason because he still feels that was his greatest failure, the emotional pain being too much. I know not “canon” but sometimes I think imagination needs to be used to fill in the gaps.
Man, imagine what the backstories would be like for the Robin suits if they actually *cared* about continuity. One of the cartoons did a good job with Dick's costume origin, explaining things like how the R got on it, leading to the codename Robin.
When I saw the title I thought you meant Tim's Red Robin costume not Tim's red Robin costume. Cause the Red Robin costume was first seen in an elseworld's story called Kingdom Come.
The blood of Jason Todd stained the old Robin suit, hence why it's red. Jk but for real, it's just Dick Grayson's Robin suit with the green swapped out. It's no big mystery.
I always wondered where the TNBA character designer got the idea for the Nightwing emblem. That's *THE* Nightwing logo, but I don't think it's ever been used in the comics, and certainly not before the late 90s.
Would've been neater if they just made a line of dialogue with Tim expressing he wants some color changes (and the one in the glass is back to the original).
idk if anyone else noticed - but Robin was supposed to be in 'Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth' and in Grant Morrison's early drafts Robin's mask is (imo) nearly identical to the TNBA design
I always thought it was Dick’s “retired” costume from before his growth spurt. Like, when Bruce first adopted him and he was still a kid, but when he god older, he did a redesign and added some green as he grew up and felt like he wasn’t as dark as Batman, sort of the early inkling of rebellion that would culminate in the episode where he quits to strike out on his own. That was my head cannon at least.
It’s funny how businesses executives always think “kids want to see kids! Put a kid in it, that will make kids watch!” when my experience was always hating kids in movies and shows as a kid, most people I know also didn’t like kids in stuff… I remember thinking that Batman is so much cooler without some kid following him around.. lol I’ve actually grown to appreciate Robin more as an adult! I like how the Bat Family grounds Bruce, and helps him retain his humanity and remember why he fights. As a kid tho… I was like “B-Man, ditch this little loser and go fight some real crime! Leave the nerd with Alfred so you can take down Ras and the ninjas!” Hahaha
For Batgirl to dream reference (yes, I'm making that a thing) Dick's original suit, she had to have seen it at one point. Using a bit of reality on this, when we dream, it's usually mixed with references we've seen or are familiar with. So, the green and red is a carry over from BTAS. Tim's suit could have been a prototype that Dick (maybe Jason) wore for a quick moment before getting his own proper suit. Also, I love how comic book Tim's suit eventually evolves into the animated version after Infinite Crisis during the 1 year later storyline in Teen Titans.
In my head canon, that was Dick's original suit when he first started. Bruce designed it, that's why it's so monotone, so Dick made some modifications and left that first one behind. That's why it was so small, compared to the college-aged Grayson who kept updating his costume as he grew.
The first time I watch Sins of The Father I just kind of automatically assumed it was Dick's costume from when he was younger, it was just the option that made the most sense to me.
due to the nature of jason todd, and his connection to the color red, in relation to the red hood costume and this red robin costume, I'm magisterially mandated to say "you said Dick an absolute Dickbreaking amount of times"
I like your final explanation more. As kind of "ehhh?" as it sounds, I like the idea that he had an original suit, wanted to be a little more edgy and cool, then decided to go back to his older color scheme.

It’s possible that Tim didn’t really see footage of Robin until Dick was wearing the red suit so for *him* that’s the “real” Robin suit.
The talking through characters in clips is either expertly timed or very well edited. Cause the lip sync is on point
I know that Question line by heart at this point

Yeah no sht it was sleeker. Obviously less color will look cooler. But colorful is more pleasing to look at. But yeah yall obviously love The Winter Soldier movie Cap suit. Darker and no colors. The art style is also why Tim drake's suit works. But yeah everyone wants superhero suits to have no color.

The “Not QUITE the same” overlap cut is GENIUS for granular stuff like this 😂 3:40
The commentary for Over the Edge posed the same question of who changed Barbara into the hospital gown. The conclusion the commenters drew was “Alfred did it but he closed his eyes”
I wouldnt worry that much, Alfred's the most 1000000% MF in all of DC
Great job giving us 80's babies a reason to hold on to our sanity! I never could reckon with the fact that Tim Drake was barely 5 feet tall and had a perfectly sized Robin suit waiting for him! I mean, just imagine if BTAS had produced a follow-up storyline after ROBIN'S RECKONING that showed Dick Grayson training with Bruce and receiving THIS kid sized outfit as his first TRUE Robin suit. Just a shame that some great subplots never got turned into full episodes. One can always dream...😂❤
I always ASSumed it was
A) different artstyle, like how Batman doesn't have oval, has entirely different face with pointy elf - comics Black Adam like ears and pouches in his belt
B) we saw Robin in the very end in previous version, and this costume belonged when Dick had comics style classic Bob Kane's c curls and classic height
Real attack on MY sanity was when I, THE kid that grew up with BTAS and Batman Forever and Batman and Robin notions, saw for the first time Adam West show based cartoon and then actual comics about Dick and Jason Robin.
I always assumed Tim Drake’s costume was one of dicks old suits. Thanks for confirming my theory.
Yup Dick being a few years older then Tim fits this, it’s a Captain America/ US agent situation where a retired alternative costume was repurposed by another character
i think so too. at 15:31 you can see the red suit behind Alfred while the green and red suit is next to it.
Your... Through different lenses explanation, is the trick I use to cope with movies & tv series re-casting.
Exactly!
I would like a video depicting the costume change for Barbara from the blue and grey in BTAS to the black and yellow in TNBA and the theories that come with it.
That’d be a good one.
I think that could fall under the same costume "viewed through a different lens"
No reason, except... it looks better.
My only thing was reading the Jason Todd dcau comic during one of the flashbacks with Jason being Robin, Barbara has a different suit. It has an all black body design like TNBA but it's cowl, boots, gloves, and cape are the same blue from BTAS. It looks good, but kinda weird no one ever mentions it
The grey and blue was just so ugly almost everyone’s outfit was ugly in the original show I don’t know why only Batman’s outfit was ok but it looked sleeker in the new show
6:47 that kingdom hearts 2 reference was absolute gold
We make it every time Detective Bullock speaks in an episode, on our podcast “Jump on the Bat-Wagon”!
In the “Lost Years” comic version, yes, he brings the suit to the Batcave and leaves it folded up on the Batcomputer.
Only thing is there's a flashback episode in the same series where Dick's costume is the red and green one as Robin
The first sentence is objectively correct
I am now officially a patron!! Thank you for your DCAU work all these years with these deep dives and S-tier edits!!
Thank you very much!
A video on the Justice Lord suits could be cool. Like what were the potential in-universe reasons for each individual swap and if hose costumes have any hidden references/meanings.
Mostly for Superman. But yes.
@@Wendy_O._Koopa
Keep in mind that a chikd like Jason literaly survived a brutal beating and an explosion, so it's not surprising that even a really serious guy like Batman reacted as if he just saw a miracle.
This is really cool. I've always preferred the red and black suit for Tim.
That’s not where the Red Robin suit came from
@@Batman-lg2zj it’s a theory and this isn’t about the red Robin.
In young justice dick wears a robin suit with black pants and sleeves
A bulk of that is probably them wanting to differentiate Dick, Jason and Tim.........then Young Justice had to steal Tim's look again for Dick.
I had always just assumed that the costume was Dick’s when he was younger so it’s cool to see it’s cannon
24:05
I have always found this cover pretty underrated. It's pretty cool to see Robin adopting a more menacing pose, even resembling a Vampire, instead of just acting as the goofy comic relief
It’s a great cover!
I honestly don't know how that pose works with him. It shouldn't, it should be ridiculous. But hot-damn does Tim pull it off.
Batman has multiple outfits so not out of the question.
Batman has a scuba, artic and an all black suit... ect.
AMEN... YOU GOT IT. Why would kids need to buy another Robin toy, if it looks almost exactly like the last? They did it to sell more merch!
It’s amazing that you not only talk about Batman but the bat family as well! I keep coming back for more of your content!
And here I thought the only way I’d get to watch someone talk about Robin costumes for half an hour is if I could stand to use a mirror for that long 😌❤️
I like how he progressively get angrier and angrier throughout the video
I never once thought this hard about the odd costume. this was .... thorough.
Said it once I'm going to say it here too. it's a butterfly effect caused by every time they time travel in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited
I definitely did not expect that the answer would be found in a letter to the editor. Though, I kinda feel like I should have known that was coming.
My Personal Headcanon:
while on a Justice League mission, Bruce suffers his first heart attack.
Nope. He'd be called The Drake.
@@GabePuratekuta oh yeah, that is ALSO a kind of bird.
@@KairuHakubi It's also an hero persona Tim went by in the comics.
Fun Fact: When The New Batman Adventures was broadcast in places outside the US, specifically Latina America:
A) The show always used the BTAS intro, as the show was never broadcast in a package alongside STAS (though the TNBA outro was used)
B) The first episode was Sins of the Father instead of the Christmas episode.
Infinite respect for the dedication to detail in this video and others on this channel!
I have a crush the first robin/Nightwing and I have to say it's pretty awesome seeing tim and the rest of the robins having fans.
Weird thing is that in the comics it’s actually drawn with the same colors as Dick’s suit
@@Kid_Spitfire Actually these are recent but aren’t The Adventures Continue.
I'm a simple man. I see DCAU video essay, I watch, I subscribe. Great video on a topic _I personally_ find trivial but entertaining nonetheless!
Yet another WDB classic, I can feel it!
😭 I love that you made dicks first DCAU robin suit as a design but no it's terrifying in the actual DCAU style
Tim’s TNBA Robin suit being one of Dick’s old costumes was what I always ran with
It does kind of seem intresting that the robin suit is the only suit changed for flashbacks. It might be a mix of wanting to seperate characters and needing to make a new model anyway.
Lettercol pages in comics used to be treasure troves of off-to-the-side answers - especially ones written by Roy Thomas.
Ah yes… a video that can finally rival the infamous yellow batsuit.
good golly gee i hope so
Most assuredly it was Alfred who put Barbara into a hospital gown. No one else could have done it
I think a interesting video would be on how the Prototype suit from Superman:the animated series, could be the predecessor of the Batman beyond suit, since they’re both relatively sleek suits with enhanced agility, strength, rocket boots, paralysis fail safe system, HUD built into the lenses ect, I know there’s not a lot of in terms of evidence for it being true but I thought it was an interesting connection nonetheless
I love how you make videos about stuff that doesn't matter and is most likely animation error or artistic choice. But boy do i love it

You said Dick 33 times, James
The Boy Wonder's comic origin actually referred to Robin Hood, especially as depicted in William Soare's art. There you got a bird-red tunic with lincoln-green highlights. So yeah...definitely wierd to see a Robin costume with no green.
... Is Watchtower Database Canon ?
It's no big mystery.
or IS IT
I always wondered where the TNBA character designer got the idea for the Nightwing emblem. That's *THE* Nightwing logo, but I don't think it's ever been used in the comics, and certainly not before the late 90s.
This is a comment.
Indeed
Nuh uh
Idk bout that

This was always my favorite robin design. The first robin design I ever saw
11:06 maybe it's sick greyson's imagination? And he and Barbra see it with green and Tim sees it as black because he is colorblind.
Funny how when you show the last Bat Family costumes you show Batman's TNBA suit then quickly show his JL uniform but with TNBA coloring
The first thing I thought of when I saw this video was the different lens approach
Put a kid in it, that will make kids watch!” when my experience was always hating kids in movies and shows as a kid, most people I know also didn’t like kids in stuff…
I remember thinking that Batman is so much cooler without some kid following him around.. lol I’ve actually grown to appreciate Robin more as an adult!
"Thirty-something neckbeards" I...um..yeah, okay, that's accurate.
In my head canon, that was Dick's original suit when he first started. Bruce designed it, that's why it's so monotone, so Dick made some modifications and left that first one behind. That's why it was so small, compared to the college-aged Grayson who kept updating his costume as he grew.
The red and black was the cleanest robin suit and is my absolute favorite.
For the longest time, I had every Robin confused because of these back and forth changes in Batman media.
The first time I watch Sins of The Father I just kind of automatically assumed it was Dick's costume from when he was younger, it was just the option that made the most sense to me.
"There's red, yellow, blue, yellow again. YELLOW AGAIN?!"
I busted out laughing at this.
you have. NO CLUE. how much this has kept me up at night. thorough and exhaustive, fun and informative, THANK YOU.
due to the nature of jason todd, and his connection to the color red, in relation to the red hood costume and this red robin costume, I'm magisterially mandated to say "you said Dick an absolute Dickbreaking amount of times"
I like your final explanation more. As kind of "ehhh?" as it sounds, I like the idea that he had an original suit, wanted to be a little more edgy and cool, then decided to go back to his older color scheme.
Now i understand the jokes of arkham subreddit:
Is there a lore reason why batman suit changes out of nowhere, is he stupid?
I love "hey throw a robin costume in the background" and nobody checking the design can turn into this, wild
My head canon was always that it was a prototype suit that Dick quit before he could ware.
