As of 2022, apparently the jury ruled in favour of Katy in an appeal, and she won. Now she screams something like "think before you take me to court" during Dark Horse, after the line of "mark my words"/"just be sure" (I've seen separate videos of her screaming it after each of those lines)
She also had to put Dagny in the credits of Never Really over because she outright stole the song and realized they'd be in court again. This is what happens when you start relying on 9 writers/producers on a track, reused ideas that lead to lawsuits, or in this case blatant plagiarism because 9 people can't write an original song :|

Lana Del Rey's "Get Free" is a ripoff of Radiohead's "Creep", which is a ripoff of The Hollies "The Air That I Breathe", which isn't even an original song by The Hollies. It was originally written by Albert Hammond.
Actually stevie talked about it in a past video
So the song originally written by the father of The Strokes guitarist?
@@Ikiya69 Radiohead owe him at least the beginning of their career, then xD
Albert Hammond wrote Get Free.(period)
See, music, by its nature, is an iterative art form. There are only so many chord progressions and so many melodies that convey a certain vibe.
one of the arguments against Darkhorse being stolen is that the whole hook is an astaccato which is a musical device used in half a bajillion songs as far back as Ugg-ugg Mountaincave. so the idea that katy perry stole it from anything besides maybe classical music is kind of a farce.
i thought that too, but in thwse court cases they must have presented enough evidence to convince a jury whether it was overlooked by a producer or not i guess it convinced a jury of normal people enough that they did indeed steal… and either whoever was being sued didn’t care enough to show counter evidence or it wasn’t enough.
@@greypandatic yes. And to be fair when we’re referring to modern pop, most songs only have a few musical devices compared to classical or sometimes, such as in the case of dark horse, many hinge on a particular device. So the argument that because both hinge on an astaccato could hold a little more weight (but not much imo). I like Stevie T’s method for the determination here, as long as 1 note is changed it’s not the same in fairness there’s allot of musical note combinations but only a fraction sound good and there’s allot of artists out there. The only other evidence to the idea that Katy Perry’s producer heard the opposite song and thought “I’m using that” is the fact that, if I remember correctly the claimant was a Christian hip hop artist and I’m pretty sure that Katy Perry started off in Christian music wildly enough. Even so it’s my personal opinion that, due to the soul crushing nihilistic concept of post modernism (nothing that will be created will be wholly original) copyright law is merely a tool for larger music studios and artists to maintain the status quo, with a few exceptions such as these where they lose a small bit of their wealth to an artist that had the patience and fortune to stick it out against them.
Funny thing: Tom wasn’t the one who sued Sam Smith. It was Jeff Lynne, the co-producer and credited co-writer.

As far as The Who vs 1D….even I knew it was a rumor. A closer use of the Baba O’Reily progression occurs in Pete’s own Let My Love Open The Door (which SHOULD happen, he wrote both songs, dammit!)…and in the chorus for Audio Adrenaline’s 2013 single “Kings And Queens” (which is the only place in the song the progression appears, by the way).

@Lemmy Winks no they were right around the same time
@Lemmy Winks smashing pumpkins formed in 88 and collective soul formed in 92. Both were active in the charts around the same time
The song that Billy from smashing pumpkins claims collective soul ripped is "drown"
I can use this phrase as a meme af 9:06
12:35 😂 That # is sooooooooo dumb!
Every AC/DC song they lawsuit themselves because it’s the same. Only jk I love AC/DC 😂
but your joke was right
@@eliasswift2921 yeah
Well, you're not incorrect, but I like to consider AC/DCs career as one giant song, but boy do I like it 😂
@@sandipbiswas766 I mean yeah, AC/DC are definitely great at what they do, even though it all pretty much sounds the same. They've made some of the greatest songs in rock history. I just don't like them because of their terrible lyrics and lack of creativity. Without Malcolm Young, they'd be nothing.
@@eliasswift2921 I agree with you. Their lyrics was kind of bland, not as thoughtful as Pink Floyd or Black Sabbath.
Edit: Zepellin too. Love your music taste!
Who thinks Stevie should make this a series if he hasn't already?
Clearly he has.
Itwpi
He should.
Huh for some reason i realized that this is the first time stevie skipped a week on his videos
This video basically proves that artists in the 2010s were desperately trying to rip off actual good music from previous decades.
