Hi Claire, so glad I have found your channel. I'm coming towards the end of my first year as an adult nurse and i've heard a lot about the myths you speak of such as needing to do a&e before going into GP nursing when asked where i'd like to qualify into and it made me worried that we can't be nqn's in a GP so i'm very glad I found your channel. I will enjoy binge watching all your videos haha. Thank you :)
Hi Claire, I really enjoy your videos as a practice nurse, as I said on your video (when you did your gp practice placement) I go into a GP's practice for my 2nd year placement and I am really looking forward to it as its completely different to ward based placements. Thank you again for your hints, tips and tricks! I am a little bit nervous but you've put my mind at ease. Thank you very much :)
@@ClaireCarmichael Hi, Claire. I am very pleased to say I got the job!! I’m starting as a HCA while awaiting my pin and then starting the VTS. I’m really nervous but so excited. I feel incredibly lucky as jobs for NQN’s near me are scarce. Xx
@@ClaireCarmichael Thank you so much, your videos are a god send for me at the moment and definitely helped me prepare for the interview so thank you! X
Have local CCGs been disestablished now? I searched for my area and it says this and all websites have been archived. Is there an alternative? Thanks for all of the information though really helpful!
@ That is strange! This is what the website says: Prior to 1 July 2022, responsibility for many health services was held by Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs). Although CCGs have now been disestablished, please find links to legacy information about each CCG below:
hi Claire I remember you posting a website that will send out a wound care book? I can't remember what vid it's in. I don't suppose you could let me know the website
That's a good question... it must be on the wound care video?? lol! I think it was active heal website?? maybe? This was a few years ago, so who knows what they do now :( x
Thank you so much Claire for this detailed video. I am starting my nursing journey this September amd starting Uni. I am interested in gp/community nursing once graduate. Just a quick question: is gp nurse same as nurse practitioner? Do you need to do more studying to become nurse practitioner? Or can you gain experience via gp nurse and become nurse practitioner with just experience??
A nurse practitioner is separate. So they will do things like prescribing and diagnosis patients. Also called advanced nurse practitioner 💙 which is extra training for this :) xx
Do you think i’m at a disadvantage since i haven’t had a GP placement? I know that general practice nursing is my dream job and i’ve had lots of experiences that are transferable such as urgent treatment centre (saw a lot of long term conditions as people can’t get gp appointments and sexual health things like that), outpatients, etc. but worried they want more!
Hi Claire, Thank you for your video, I'm so glad it's a myth that you need ward expirience😀. I just had 2 questions: I am doing child nursing, currently in my final year, is it still possible to do gp nursing? I will add transferable skills and sell myself as you mentioned. Also, is it possible to become IV competent in the gp you work at if you go straight into gp after your degree? Thank you❤
Yes you can go in as child / mental health nursing too! :) we see children so you’d be a huge benefit! No you won’t do any IV as a GP nurse but you will do bloods and injections / vaccines 💙
Hi Claire thank you so much for the useful information, I have a theatre based preceptorship which starts next year, I want to experience different aspects of nursing before deciding on one speciality, as many placements were only ward based. If after a couple of years of theatre nursing I find it’s not for me do you think I could still apply for GP nursing? Thank you Claire
Hi, I was wondering do you recommend doing a degree in Adult Nursing or Child Nursing to become a GP Nurse? Does it not matter which degree you get or will one have a slight advantage against the other?
Yeah community is doing home visits to people in their own home. GP is different. Try checking your local GP websites as they usually advertise on their own websites rather than NHS, or call them 😀
Hi Claire, I would like to ask you, how long are you considered a nqn after the nursing degree, also what’s the biggest gap you can leave before you start working as a nurse xx
I think it depends on you and how competent you are etc. I’m 18months in and only just finished all my GP Nurse training so still classed as a NQN I guess? You have have a 6month gap but any more and you have to contact the NMC and let them know x
For GPs looking for “experienced” nurses, how long do you think would be sufficient before I can apply. I’m a 2nd year at BCU but hoping to be a GP nurse like you x
Amazing! Birmingham and Solihull CCG are doing really well at getting NQN into GP too! 💙 apply anyway as a NQN! Don’t worry about ‘experience’ - they won’t get many apply because GP nurses are retiring at the minute 💙 just go for it! Cx
@@ClaireCarmichael thank you for replying 😊 and I will literally start my 2nd year in September. Sorry to ask how much you get paid as a practice nurse? I am a RGN working right now in a care home. Thinking to join NHS either to start part time in a hospital or gp nurse. Also is there an opportunity to learn further to become ANP if you work in GP?. Do they support for it?
It depends where you work. Every single GP is different. But they shouldn’t be paying you any less than a band 5! Ever! I was lucky and had really good GP’s who paid very well :) my starting salary was equivalent to a band 6. Yes they will fund your training and support ANP too 🥰 or they should!
