To think this masterpiece was done because the creator's sister was killed with a gun. And wondered what a gun would think if it had a conscience. "Superman" always just gets me. This is one of those moments that gets me even knowing Iron Giant lives. Not many moments can do that.
How about being mad at the monster husband that killed her and himself instead of the gun? He would have done it with a hammer, a knife or anything else if he didn’t have a gun.
@@KramericaIndustries-jd9cyI think the creator may have felt sympathy based on how the Iron Giant is portrayed. A weapon doesn't have a choice. It can be used to harm or protect. In this What If scenario a weapon made to hurt humans sacrifices itself to save them.
@@mnomadvfxdoes salute, in the big crowd scene of people. He is in the bottom left corner and is the only one doing the salute. He does also take off his helmet like you said shortly afterwards
I do love how the general isnt immediately, "stay out of this civilian. the military knows best/has its orders." He actually listens to what Dean has to say, and you can tell hes weighing his options
That's one of the things about this movie I appreciate - the military are NOT idiots! The General is not some arrogant ass! He's a reasonable guy. The soldiers, the General, even the fighter pilots who knock the Giant out of the sky and the guys on the battleships and the submarine that launched the missile - they're all working from training and doctrine - and are just mis-informed by the REAL villain - the ONLY one actually holding the IDIOT BALL in this film - Mansley. Once the General gets the real picture, he's on Hogarth, Dean's and even the Giant's side! You can see that in the salute he gives the Giant as he lifts off to go intercept the missile, his sad resignation and doffing his helmet in respect of the giant's sacrifice and the fact he sent that jaw hinge screw to Hogarth.
That's because he's a real soldier who has probably seen enough death himself to last a lifetime. While Mansley is basically a self important bureaucrat who dreams of pew pew bang bang glory, but lacks the actual courage to go through with it personally.
It's hinted at more in a deleted scene that the Iron Giant was originally an alien war machine which explains his weapons. Somehow though he crash landed on earth and had lost his memories. Whatever metal he's made of seems almost indestructible so to counteract impact shocks his parts are separated with homing beacons so he can reassemble himself.
Emphasis on "almost" indestructible. I think part of his systems include both a "conscious" and "unconscious" ability to either anticipate impact forces or react to them instantly. If the system determines that survival overall would be best served by taking the hit and remaining intact it'll do that. But beyond a certain threshold it will decide to allow the linking force and the physical connecting linkages to "relax" and allow parts to be dispersed to lesson the kinetic, heat and other forces so that each individual piece has a higher chance of surviving as their own units instead.
For a long time people have said Superman is boring or unrelatable but I feel like the scene where the Giant chooses to be like Superman it shows that is all BS. Superman despite modern poisoning of his character and other knock offs is Extreme power in the hands of Extreme good. Doing the right thing for the sake of it. Not out of ego or selfish desire. Save those that can’t save themselves. It’s a powerful message that needs to come back!
Well, it's ironic how his character swung around from being less relevant and considered the cliche "boyscout" super hero to now standing out because that's no longer considered the norm. If shows like Invincible or The Boys is any indicator, modern times' obsession with more "realistic" depictions of media has made the edgy, self-serving, proud, egotistical superhero the norm because "real people are like that." It feels disingenuous to believe there are no true heroes anymore, even in real life, because despite real life's complexities, there simply are people who choose to be self-less and help people because they believe it 's the right thing to do. Super Man is awesome because despite being practically a god among humans who could destroy them easily or use it for selfish purposes, he grew up in a humble setting and just learned simple moralistic values, and it's impressive that he stands as a real ideal and goal for people to strive toward. I don't think he's perfect, and it depends on the depiction, but I think people need characters like that too instead of just bleak, gritty, "realistic" characters. The giant just realizing what is happening and staring down at all the people who have resigned to their fate, knowing he can stop it and just choosing to do it, no questions asked, is powerful in that way. He's not just good because that's what he was made to be. He's good because like Super Man, he chooses to protect those with his immense power when he clearly demonstrated he could have destroyed the world's armies just a few moments earlier.
