@auxmike Thanks for the kind words, Mike! I haven't been in the LTZ, not sure on 0-60 times. The LT, LTZ, and Eco all share the same 138 HP 1.4L Turbo. The LT & LTZ are automatic-only and the Eco is manual-only. The base LS gets a naturally-aspirated 1.8L with a six-speed manual.
Ignore him Dan.
Your reviews are great, you keep up the good work and continue making me and your other viewers proud. :)
I recently bought a 2012 Cruze LT1 RS. 6 Speed manual. I absolutely love it. My first tank in very very harsh winter conditions (below 20 degrees non stop, usually closer to 0), heavy snow, and winding hilly backroads to and from work I averaged 38MPG. My only complaint would be the seats comfort. I'm 6'4 and my non-leather seats are hard to get comfy in, and they seem a little TOO hard. And my previous car was a 2003 WRX. All in All I love this car, and hope someday to get it fitted with a nice pair of 18" aftermarket shoes to complete the look.
The NJ state speed limit is 65 MPH, so we use two Interstate highway loops: 1) with the cruise control set to 68 MPH, 2) varying speeds between 60-72 MPH.
That backseat sure is tight for a vehicle that Chevy says has as much interior room as a mid size car!
I own a Cruze Eco, with more than 13,000 miles. My average mpg, mostly commuting in Washington DC, is 40.1mpg.
The Eco manual does get the advertised mpg. Fun to drive, quiet, and great mileage.
I thought this car would be pretty quick with that cool turbo.
Does the LTZ version get a bigger engine and better 0-60?
You reviews are SO easy to follow and well filmed. Please don't stop doing them!
@MrEnergyConspiracy To be clear ... this state's speed limit is 65. Our target testing speed is 68 MPH with cruise control on, and 60-72 MPH with cruise control off. This is spelled out in the written review.
The easiest way to get the best mileage out of any vehicle is to accept that the driver and road conditions are wild cards.
Best of luck with your experiments. Be sure to set a solid baseline and be as consistent as possible.
The Eco model weights 200 pounds less then the 1LT model, and i read somewhere that Chevrolet reduced its fuel tank from 15.6(regular Cruze) to 12.6 gallons but can still acheive 500+ miles on the highway.
Excellent Review. I picked up the eco a month and a half ago and pretty much obtain the same results you did MPGoMatic. However I have yet to rev up past 5000rpm lol. Seeing how you did the 0-60 im tempted to give it a go....
just bought one yesterday... great little car.. im new to the manual so that is gonna take some practice great looking car although its not fast it does have some spunk to it.... chevy did a great job on this
@BlazerLT - I hear ya! :) Are you on a laptop or desktop PC, running Internet Explorer, by chance? Did you click the speaker icon under the video (next to the play button) and move the volume slider to the right? My kid swiped the speakers from my PC ... but it sounds just fine on the Mac and iPhone.
@BlazerLT That's an interesting observation ... I can't recall adjusting the tire pressure in any of the test vehicles we've had over the years. We just drive 'em the way they've been dropped off. Tire pressure can fluctuate depending on time of day/temperature.
I like that last shot. These new American cars are definitely something to be proud of! :)
Most Automakers recommend 32-37 in the tires, usually kept around 35. Considering the temperature outside the tire pressure may have started lower than it was and in some cases the vehicle must be restarted after x amount of time to reset the computer and any dummy lights for the tire pressure, however that was the traction control light as he had turned it off for a true estimate of 0-60 for the vehicle, as some systems are too intrusive off the line
@mpgomatic u can get the Eco in an auto, it's rated at 37 on the highway.
@BlazerLT Dan is overinflating is tires like every hypermiler out there because you can get extra MPGs that way whereas underinflated tires will cause bad fuel economy (up to 3per cent). When the door stickers says 32psi it only means the manufacturers recommends that for quality ride while it is safe to pump your tires up to the sidewalls maximum pressure. Im driving with my winter tires at 40psi at the moment.
@DominicGuitarist Thanks, Dominic! It had all season tires ... and just over 1000 miles when it was delivered. I'd have no problem cracking 50 MPG highway sustained, once broken in, with warmer weather, running summer gas, on the right road ... and at an optimum speed. That said, we hope to test another Cruze Eco at some point in the future.
Great job as always Dan! 44mpg is great considering its winter. Did the review unit had winter tires on? Im sure with optimal weather conditions and a wind drift backing up you up 50+mpg would be easily acheivable. I dont understand how this car isnt sporty or powerful enough for them. They need to know it has other goals like competing with the current compact cars while acheiving "hybrid-like" fuel economy.
44 mpg highway? Thats amazing. Who needs a prius. This thing is fun, good looking, roomy, and overall a great car. Finally a fuel efficient car we can buy without appearing gay
@mpgomatic Exactly. In the end your throttle input tells all. Trucks are a good example of good marketing from a manufacturer standpoint. Cylinder deactivation systems only work up to 60-62mph in most cases. Over that, there's too much aero drag so all cylinders are firing and then owners get ticked because the system isn't working, yet they can't ask the salesperson nor read the owners manual and right away it's the vehicles fault and not their own.
If you check CarandDriver, you will see that the Cruze Eco is virtually the same size as the 2012 BMW 3-series sedan. And if you check Autoweek.com, they said of being able to accelerate to 60mph in 8.5-seconds. Everyone should know that fuel economy will depend on the driving style and road conditions as you've got to be near perfect to get EPA numbers.
@DominicGuitarist 32psi is not underinflating your tires and it is not some wrong guideline. It leads to premature tire wear and can be deemed unsafe when under extreme braking conditions while on uneven road conditions. That does not represent real life diring conditions. As Dan said, he didn't inflate the tires, it was given to him that way. The tire is part of the suspension and overinflating it rock hard leads to premature suspension failure as well if your roads are rough.
@mpgomatic I would check on that. No one drives around with rock hard tires inflated 5-6psi over the tire rating. It would unfairly skew fuel economy figures to represent something that most will not see in real life.
@mpgomatic Desktop with a 300 watt surround sound system. Volume was maxed for the video. It's just a tad low and I have to raise my volume level. I'd up it maybe 10-15%.
@DominicGuitarist But I'm not a hypermiler. I don't recommend over-inflation. Your mileage may vary ... :)
I have driven an a cobalt eco and it's tires called for 36psi if I recall correctly. 32psi would make the indicator light come on.
Great review. Does this turbo "recommend" premium?
@MrEnergyConspiracy Highway speeds vary from state-to-state. I have to test where I live. If I had my druthers, I'd highway test in Montana. :) These highway tests are performed with a new car, week-after-week, most often over the same exact course. I've done this with 100 cars or so. Driving technique and conditions are a HUGE factor.
Some cars meet the EPA stated #s, others exceed the #s, sometimes quite dramatically. The manufacturers provide the #s to the EPA. Some are QUITE conservative.
I hear GM wanted to keep it lightweight in addition to the aerodynamics. How much does this car weigh, and in contrast to a standard Cruze?
god i hope this will be a good quality car. there's SO much crap getting built these days, i really wanna get something like this, but i absolutely refuse to buy a new car until it's been out a few years. only time will tell i guess.
I love have you say "all in all" in nearly every video, and I laugh thanks to the Pixar Cars 2 movie with the fuel they called "allinol"!
Great reviews by the way.
Kinda reminds me of a late 90's econobox. Just newer, a lot better looking, and of a lot higher quality. My stepdad's 1998 Saturn LS gets about 40 MPG. Which is great, however, it doesn't have power anything and overall is a cheap car. Just as they made them in the late 90's. I hope to get a Cruze Eco soon.
@MikerGTX Ya, an SS model would be beast. I just don't understand this whole thing of car companies not offering manual in some models but offering it in others.
I'm sure its a great car. But I have one complaint. Why on earth are companies starting to put radio controls on the right side of the steering wheel? It makes no logical sense with a manual transmission car. It sounds stupid, but in heavy traffic, sometimes you do want to adjust the volume or whatever while you're shifting. It works fine in automatic ONLY cars, but not those that can have either.
I have the 2013 model and driving like a tool I still get 34 mixed. It's not as fast as my Subaru but it gives off the illusion that the engine is way bigger than 1.4 liters. My biggest gripe is that little cubby in front of the shifter. With a manual you can't put anything the size of a business card or longer in it.
@caliberguy07 Thanks, Caliberguy! Just got an Elantra onto the schedule, unfortunately it won't be for quite a while, due to logistics.
@chorstma44 A Prius will get 49 MPG in the City but they say 51 and 50 or so on the Highway. And the Chevy Cruze only gets 28MPG in the city. So all in all the Prius is still much more fuel efficient. Plus if there is traffic on the Highway you will get lower MPG while the Prius will go to battery mode so you won't use gas.
pretty solid review
no one has commented on this in 6 years. let’s change that
@johnhowington lol when i said camaro, i mean 1995 camaro thats been in our fam for 10 years, and recently has been breaking down on me and i dont want to spend money for repairs any more. i still have it. i'll probably fix it up later. i do miss driving it.
I am noticing on all of your reviews that your tires are showing up incredibly overinflated at 36-37psi. Why are you overinflating the tires?
they should put the 2.4L 4 cylinder with eassist in there it would be a lot quicker
Man, so torn between a 2lt Stick and an Eco stick. The 2lt would be much nicer with leather, nicer gauges, rear disk brakes but an extra $120/month for a new 2lt vs a used Eco is kinda eating at me lol.
@blackseries99 the only reason why i wojuld buy the mazda3 is because maybe it looks a little better and more fun to driver and more hp. i hope they put atleast 160 hp on the cruze
@oldsmobile98boy Then why did I get 38 mpg going between 45-60mph on a 150 mile road trip on back country roads with the ECO Automatic!
The thing that turned me off about this car is how they shrunk the gas tank size to 12.6, and that it has a tire inflator kit instead of a spare.
@305pride --nice choice.
I have a request. If you get a chance: 2010 or 11 Honda Pilot
Seen where you said the eco was manual only that's not so my eco is an automatic
@MrEnergyConspiracy With all due respect, are you calling our testing procedures "a total lie?" If so, I beg to differ.
Fuel economy is a direct result of driving technique. Our figures represent a conservative approach, with highway travel speeds just a few miles over the posted speed limit. (Our Interstates have a 65 MPH limit.)
Generally speaking, the faster you travel the lower your fuel economy. The more lane changes (with the application of throttle), the lower your fuel economy.
@BlazerLT maybe tget gad a little more pounds of air in them to account for some of the loss that tires get in cold weather
This is an awesome car! It;s a little on the small side though...
The audio for your reviews is a little too low.
turbo engine? does it require premium fuel?
@jd5179 Smaller gas tank saves weight which helps fuel economy, however at the same time cutting overall driving distance before the next fillup, I would much rather have the 13 gallon tank versus my 18 gallon tank in my suzuki
@oldsmobile98boy Let me get this straight. You're calling me a liar?
looks good!!
I love the Cruze, however, I hate Chevy for what they've done to it. This car is top notch for a small eco-car. But of course, all of the "good" models only come in automatics.
@blackseries99 i was interested in the new focus too, but ive always been a chevy guy. i was interested in the cruze when i heard about it. but when it came out i got bored of it. but when i drove the rs cruze i liked it alot. but more realistically i'll probably end up with the first generation mazda3 by the summer
@blackseries99 thanx. i had a camaro, but now wanted a small car with good mpgs and more space but still fun to drive. civics and corollas are boring
Uh no. You are wrong. Every person I know that has one gets an average 38-42 MPGs. That is quite a few people.
@smbstressfest i text drove it too and i loved it. i have trouble picking the chevy cruze or the mazda 3. i like both for small cars.
For you're highway mileage of 43.9mpg is that going 55?
@MikerGTX ECO says somethin' to you? MR. underpowered eco?
A tire sealant kit will never replace a spare tire!
Whats the avg Mpg when driving aggressively.
@MusicMan0007 First of all, i'm not a big fan of gm. There are only like 2 gm cars I like and thats it. And if you were actually paying attention, I was talking about toyota. Did I mention honda anywhere in my statement? Honda is decent. They aren't like toyota. Their cars don't have problems and they don't lie and sell faulty cars like toyota does
wait, why would a slow car encourage people to drive manuals?
I want one but full option
times have changed. chevy should put a diesel in this car. that would be a lot of mpg's
Why no new videos??????
@305pride Go test drive a TDI
@MikerGTX Way underpowered? Have you even driven one? Its not a sports car.
I wish it has bigger gas tank - l
Is there a chevy cruze that has gps?
@TylerBrandonHardwick Near sea level.
No heated seat wtf, come standard on elantra
@305pride--Cruze is very mediocre. Check out for new Ford Focus also.
@toyota420xp Nah, it was Chevy trying to get the car to get better mileage than most will see in real life.
Awesome review. HATE the car.
@MrEnergyConspiracy YMMV
138 hp? may i throw up?
yeaaaaaaaaaaaa i love the chevy cruze, even if it is just a korean car lol
you lie! chevorlet is recalling all the cars because they only get lie 25 mpg.
@chorstma44 The Prius is also more than $5,000 more than this car
I think this car is like 90% restarted what with its misspelled name and being Chinese and full of recalls.
But Damn would it be awesome if someone would just put a big ass turbo on it. that's the only way i would like this car.
@305pride Mazda3 is better
oh yea? well Europeans complain when we make a clutch that's a little too hard to press & a shifter that a little too hard to throw.. spoiled shits....
@chorstma44
excuse me not all gay ppl drive a sissy Prius. Choose a different word.
@chorstma44
Ok I could agree with that LOL what about for the woman who drive those slow ass pieces of junk?
20/12/2021 😅🤣
