Modified Chevrolet Cruze Eco - One Take

- Опубліковано 10 жов 2024
- The Chevy Cruze doesn't get enough credit for being as good as it is. It's fundamentally a taut chassis that, with the proper upgrades, can be a really fun daily driver that you can take to the track or autocross with confidence. The options for modification are more than you expect, and we find Jerry's Cruze Eco strikes a nice balance for a fun, well rounded economy car.
I don't care what you drive, if you're a car guy I can respect and appreciate whatever you drive.
Realest comment I ever read.
Yep it’s not about what you drive aslong as you enjoy driving it!!
Right here is why I love the one takes. We see cars that we wouldn't if thought of being modified and for the most part they turn out pretty damn good.
Big props for Matt for doing these types of cars.
you just got me to watch it. i stoped after he said 170 hp
id rather see this than another damn bmw.
+burntrubberballs Not everyone has $100K and unlimited funds to buy or build their dream car. Seeing cars like this and turning them into something more, is ALWAYS a good thing.
I couldn't agree with you more.
Couldn't have said it better, this is why I subscribe. I love odd ball cars, guys building the unexpected and enjoying what they can afford. Not every car guy is rich, build what you can and make it yours. I hope to get one of my shit boxes on a one take in the future
Props to this dude for working with and having pride for what he's got.
you said the Truth!
Thank you sir.
i have the same car , thinking of doing some stuff to it
Fun - and by fun i mean sad (to me, at least) - fact: here in Brazil the Chevy Cruze is a luxury car that only people making 6 figures can afford to have... The minimum wage is R$ 950,00 and the car costs almost R$ 100.000,00
Gotta love America
These are some of my favorite videos. People just modding what they can
....agreed, true "real" cars!
Yeah definitely. I'll take one of these videos over a BMW, McClaren, etc.
+Archibald VonFookFace You would take a chevy cruze over a Mclaren or BMW? I've fucking heard it all now.
+Robbspeed3 I believe he/she meant that they prefer these kinds of videos to the supercar ones
thelittleterrorist22 It's all so clear to me now.
If gm made an ss version of the Cruze with the 2.0 lnf it would be a fun little car
Nice mild modding of an otherwise snore of a car. He didn't go overboard and I like that. Nice.
These videos frequently make me want cars I'd have otherwise never considered.
'It's a good Beefy Knob' - I giggled like a damn child..
so im not the only one....
Super awkward silence after that LMAAO
I have a 2018 Chevy Cruze manual I don't think I can change my stick .
I never thought I'd say this about a Cruze but that looks sweet. It makes some great noises, too. Definitely a nice build.
These are my favorite videos. Every day guys doing their best to model every day cars on a budget.
Yeah, brake fluid upgrade, aerodynamic wiper blades, removed the valve stem caps, all for performance you know??
Kidding! Dude has a lot of pride and joy in his car kudos.
I love these unusual tuner cars and sleepers. So cool to see something that was designed for normal driving turned into a partial track car lol.
Matte black hood and gas cap.. LOL Fresh as fuck.
Still can't hate on a guy if he is doing what makes him happy. I just personally think that looks silly.
Thanks for the video Matt! These kind of cars are always the funnest to watch!
That Cruze looks like a lot of fun on 4 wheels. Made me go to Chevy's website and look them up.
finally a car any working subscriber can go purchase and modify
D Carden fr fr
Were the fires anywhere near where you recorded? For some reason I thought I read they were.
The Eco has the same engine as all the LT models and it's a little lighter so he made a good choice for customizing.
Quote of the day "I like this knob It's a big beefy knob" 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂
He had his big hands, on the guy's beefy knob!
lol The knob is basically the same dimension as a Coke can
You bunch of naughty naughty chaps!
cant wait for all these ecotech / ecoboost cars to become 15+ years old
the US will finally have cheap turbo cars around to tune and beat on
Jetta 1.8t brah
AlexCell33
i know we have a few now, but there will be twice as many in the upcoming years
Yeah, there is the Kia Turbo, and the Dart turbo(though these, just like the cruise, are made for fuel economy).
My friend put a blowoff on his cruze and it's pretty funny. Useless but pretty funny.
Pagan Min
But how much boost pressure do those run stock? I would imagine low pressure doesn't make much noise.
I remember hearing a turbo kia(I think) make the blow off sound, but it was so quite I think no one would notice. I'm a car enthusiast so I notice every detail about cars.
Whoa nice set of Volk TE37.
You know you're stretching for a mods list when you say "brake fluid"
If you go on tracks it IS a good idea to go from like a DOT3 to a DOT5.... Not only they can handle heat better but the better fluids resist wear to heavy breaking too.
Yeah, but thats like saying 94 octane fuel is a modification... Lightweight washer fluid... whats next?
+Lt. Roast-a-hoe Tuning a car to run on 94 would absolutely be a mod.
Yes, tuning is a mod. Pouring in some fluid is just general maintenance.
***** The owner never said it was a mod. From the start he said the brake fluid was upgraded.
i like these type of reviews. the odd cars that people dont appreciate, i have an odd car that i have not seen on the show and i would like for you to review it. I know some people will appreciate it like i do this video haha. how do i submit it? let me know!
If you're in LA, send photos and info to matt@thesmokingtire.com
How far are you willing to travel for a car?
yo andy what car
A tuned turbo Cruz...that's freaking awsome ..I love it
That’s the first Cruze I’ve heard with an exhaust that actually sounds good. Not to loud but a good tone. Very nice. Might do that to my Cruze.
A guy at my local track days runs a modified diesel Cruze. He surprised a lot of people in it.
When I moved back to my hometown full of long and flat roads, a typical conversation would go like this. "What was your favorite part about living in LA for a couple years?" My response would be "I only had a 5 minute drive to get to Little Tujunga Canyon". "What's up there?" "Nothing. It's just a road I like." "I don't get it. So you just go and drive around on a road for fun?" "Yes...whats so hard to understand about that..." God I miss that road
The cruise chassis is actually very good, the cruise has won European sedan car championships a number of times in the last few years that means all the BMW's the Volkswagens The Hondas and Acuras the whatever else are behind it. Respect earned.
love it that there are people who still have love for low-hp cars too :) respect every car guy (Y)
TheKatanaRider just muscle car, it not all about speed, sound and driving it is sweet
I love the cruze, granted they are not fast by any means they are really fun in corners.
One takes is the best car show of all time, this and Leno's garage.
gabriel iglesias is looking trim
😂😂😂 That is hilarious!.
That doesn't even look like him
Lmao
I really hope GM does something cool with the new Cruze. The hot hatch is definitely making a comeback, they'd be wise to jump on the bandwagon.
They could do something with the Sonic!!
+Archibald VonFookFace Definitely the sonic. They should make one that competes with the fiesta st.
+Archibald VonFookFace I just wanted to say i love your user name...😂😂😂👍
+Robbspeed3 Right...and I'll be the Queen of England next week.
We are talking GM HERE. After Honda's motorcycle divison there's nothing LAMER than GM. 👎💩
+JIGA BACHI I don't know about all that. What car do you own?
just had a 1st gen Cruze as rental. and I must say, it was NOT the worst car I've ever driven. handling was more than acceptable, even the 6pd automatic was hard to fault. only real weakness I found keeping me from scoring it a 10 was the brakes. kinda reminds me of the original Audi A4, which ironically i don't remember being as good as this Cruze.
It sits perfect...mad respect for the Cruze & owner.
Not sure how I feel about this one. The concept is cool getting 45mpg and being able to auto cross it. But at the same time I feel like you can get a similar size sedan with more hp stock, and easier to find parts to modify. I guess it just depends on the person you are
But not with that kind of fuel economy, at that price. When you're realisitic about your expectations (95% highway driving, 5% autocross), the fuel economy and low price of entry wins out.
+TheSmokingTire yea I hear you. But at the same time when you own a car you want to take to track days and auto cross the fuel economy may be something worth sacrificing and as he said this is a car he built for the track
It's okay a cruiser doesn't get 45mpg anyways.
sounds really good actually
good lord, I chuckled when you said "beefy knob"
i always love these one takes. keep up the good work. from Australia.
I bought this car for the seats. I hate leather and caramel cloth seats so I chose this car for the black cloth seats lol.
These seats are better than more expensive cars in my opinion lol.
Having driven them both in rental car spec, the Cruize is under appreciated because the focus exist which has a much more playful chassis. That said the Cruize, even in boring rental car mode, is quite competent in the corners. I can see how this would be a really fun car.
I have a 1LT RS auto as a daily with an intake, upgraded bypass valve and a 93oct tune from BNR. In no way shape or form are these cars quick even with mods, but they are safe, handle well, and can get 40+mpg. For the price they are a good value.
I feel like Chevy and Dodge missed an opportunity not releasing SS and SRT versions of their latest econo-boxes. Would've been cool.
ive been saying the same thing.
really would like to see a performance cruze or sonic even
Just swap it
I have this car called a Miata. It's a 95 M edition, manual, duel exhaust (meh, but looks cool), and some other goodies like wheel and spring upgrade. Not sure if you've heard of this kind of car before, but I feel like it has a lot of potential
This guys proves you can take any car and modify it and use any car for autocross
jerry makes AMAZING cruze performance parts.
I have a 2012 Cruze LT and even stock, the car is a blast to drive on a twisty road.
We've got an '11 ECO 6MT. There are some problem areas, but it's all relatively cheap to fix. Mine has taken a valve cover ($40), a coolant elbow ($27) and vent tube ($11), a water pump (warranty up to 150k, but $50 if you have to buy one), an intake manifold (early ones had issues with check ball retainer breaking. If you have to buy it, the whole manifold with fuel rail and throttle is like $300. Mine was warranty.) and a turbocharger ($500 including the manifold and wastegate, from GM). The turbo was my wife, though. Even in the winter, she starts it up, backs out of the driveway, and runs the piss out of it.
Love how early you upload, maybe I watch before work, after work, and sometimes both.
Not one comment about dat "good beefy knob" in his hand. I'm disappointed internet.
lol Matt doesn't like those pencil knobs
I know, right?
Matt likes the girth
😂👍
"You know what else is better when it's thicker? Cocks." - Matt Farah, Smoking Tire Podcast
I honestly would go after the car that looks good to me and modd it Instead of buying the usual sports cars if I had unlimited money.
Thanks for the video, guys. I love all the oddball cars you drive on this show.
I love these regular cars. Keep em coming!
I was so prepared not to like this thing, but it actually looks really good, and, though I don't know how, I guess it's fast.
If this was back in the good ole days this baby would be RWD and would have a two door model, Make Chevrolet Great Again
Yes, it being fwd is the only killer for me.
the chassis has potential, since its used in the 280bhp Opel/Vauxhall astra
US had the old astra hatchback too, look up saturn astra,
We still have "Opel"s... They're Buicks now :)
Anything unique and custom gets golden stars on my imaginary wall. Creativity ftw
I'd love to see a modified Ford Probe on this channel. I think they would surprise you a lot.
You know they use this as World Touring Championship Car in Europe.
Had this car when it first came out dropped it off at Injen for them to fab there first intake for a Cruze. It was loud lol, just with the intake. Good handling car I thought, no rattles at all and trunk was a decent size for being a small car. It has a small turbo and engine this thing I had to shift at 5200-5500 rpms just runs out up top no point in going any higher. Mine also had a tune woke it up a little felt more torque then more hp. Great little car
Never in my life would I imagine seeing the words "modified" and "Chevrolet Cruze" in the same title on a UA-cam video.
People said the same thing about the Cobalt SS until the turbocharged version destroyed the "Ring". Anything can be quick with the right amount of time and money spent.
BNR (Bad News Racing) has a kit and tune to get 300 whp outta these 1.4
not to shabby...👍alot of us are getting 400-600whp outta the 2.0-2.4,2.5...Ecotec is a worthy platform...
"a good beefy knob..."
The ecotec blocks are durable as hell. Even the OVH engines, like the 4.3L and 5.3L are incredibly strong blocks. 6 bolts main caps, very thick balk heads and forged still crank. Hell the 3.6L GM High Feature Output engine has made 1700hp.
Even the now retired 3800 series 2/3 block are tough as hell, guys making 800rwhp with the stock crank and forged rods and pistons. The 3800 s 2/3 had is designed like Buick's stage motors from the 80's, but with a shorter deck and the 3800's only have 8 bolt heads where the stage motors has 14 bolts heads. The fastest v6 in the world is a Buick Motor Sports stage II motor with stage II heads. 6.5x at 21x in the 1/4 mile. I bet the 3800 had a forged crank it could easily make 1200 to 1400 hp.
The Cruze over here has a 2.0 diesel with 170 or so stock crank power and can be re tuned to make near 200HP which coupled with the diesel torque and efficiency should be much better than the eco thing you get in the states
It's the big thing here. Putting turbos on everything = eco.
No Well, my car has the 1.0L ecoboost and its a terrific engine! IMO a small engine with a turbo is more fun than a mainstream NA four banger. The 1.4T in the 500 abarth is a great example, a joyful engine full of character.
Dh Do By character you just mean flaws. Personally I love turbos more but a bigger NA engine will always respond better. I have a fetish for turbo as I drive a supra but I mean not really. Sure it has personality but that's just because it's flawed and doesn't respond exactly to your inputs as you be used to on a regular gas. You know waiting for spool lag or threshhold.
It was offered in America, absolutely no one bought it.
No Power delivery is a flaw, especially in an old turbo engine like your 2jz but damn this makes them fun, albeit a little challenging. An engine with some lag or thresh-hold also feels a little faster than it really is.
I have a Cruise eco with the manual that I bought solely for the gas mileage since I had a pretty sizable drive for work when I got it. Its totally stock and if you aren't in boost the acceleration is abysmal thanks to the long gearing. With that being said, even stock, it is still a fun car on twisty roads. And the mileage numbers are a nice bonus.
BNR is working on a tune for my '18 Equinox awd and I hope they ship it soon along with their recirculation valve. 😍
at least its not crappy cvt like most compact cars today.
We own an rt charger and a Cruze and we were in the charger and had a modified Cruze to look like an Sti tooling around with us. It was pretty cool
Can someone give Matt an old Cobalt SS to test! Been waiting years for that one!
that seems surprisingly good. interesting!
Remember this chassis is the global chassis for Chevrolet and they use this chassis in British touring car championship. And they won fairly often. Probably some pretty good parts available from the U.K. For this car.
A cruze drove by my house and it had a super loud bov, it took me by surprise being an upscaled rental car.
SDD525 Absolutely, not very many people know the performance character of this car. It's a sleeper.
Always loved the Cruze
I have a 2011 Chevy Cruze LTZ and was really trying to do my car something like this! sounds freaking awesome! yes its a slow car but man got to give him props. How much did you spend for this setup? and if u mind me asking what exactly did you do to it in mods?
RS3 tires are the single biggest upgrade on this car, lots and lots of grip at that point it's just up to the suspension tuning to decide what characteristics you want in the car at the limits of grip, for FWDs I assume a humble amount of oversteer is desired with a nice thick rear bar.
Cool. I just picked up a 6 speed eco.
the awkward silence after he said "a good beefy knob" made me LOL
This car is rad. So different, yet so common.
@3:54 "I like this knob, it's a good beefy knob" .. LOL!
I had first generation eco. good gas milage, which was the reason I bought it. very fun. feeding it premium reduces red-light stalls. oil needs to be changed at 3000 miles. if you go by the computer percentage, you'll get in trouble. the performance of the car gets noticeably worse depending on fuel type and oil life.
i owned the Australian version of this and it was one of the best handling cars i have ever owned but they don't have nearly enough power
Underrated car, had one as a rental, really easy to drive which makes it easy to drive quickly
Nice wheels!
"Break Fluid UPGRADE"
That bug on the windshield very anoying !
Your comment is very annoying(*) !
"A good, beefy knob..."
I love my cruze it's fun making power I also work with bnr good people!
The only thing I wish I had on my Cruze was a manual transmission. It has an automatic transmission with a manual mode, but it's really not the same. I hope someday I can turn my car into a performance machine.
Just wanted to say that I love the channel and have no problem supporting you by disabling adblock, but 1 minute videos are annoying. Keep up the good work!
When you sign up with most rental car companies you get to pick your car in a given class off their lot. If you want good gas mileage go for the boring Toyota Corolla or similar transportation appliances. If you want something fun to flog, go for the Cruze. They're surprisingly willing to play. You have to give Chevy some points for a little bit of Corvette DNA trickling down into the Cruze (and it's brand mates). It also helps this platform is used for the much more expensive Volt and stupid expensive Caddy ELR.
i disagree, rented a cruz, felt like a 4 cylander...
keep doing re-do's, that gives me time to finish my rotisserie resto-mod 95 mustang 429...
I love my baby 2009 :)( i'v remapped my one series 1, my God you can feel the difference
BNR has some great stuff for Cruzes/Sonics they are the sole reason I don't get completely embrassed by Fiesta STs lol
I've got a 2012 chevy cruze that i will be working on soon and i want mine to be like this and better.
I'd love to race this Cruze in my stage 2 manual b5 Passat. I think you would be a pretty even match up. My car makes a little more power. 205 hp I'm not sure who's is heavier. Mines 3040 lbs
The cruze is actually a prime chassis for a race build.
oh really?
+David G Yeah, and their touring car racing heritage greatly supports that. They've been kicking ass for years in the WTCC and other more localized touring car racing organizations.
koopatroopa187 It's a pity the turbo engine i have has literally ZERO pull below 3000 in any gear but first.
+koopatroopa187 you're not telling me anything technical about the chassis. I had one of these as a rental and it was god awful. Handled like a yacht. I drive an s2000 so I'm used to go kart handling but the chassis on this didn't feel like anything spectacular.
David G that's because it was a rental, smartass. of course it's going to handle like a yacht - there's a metric shit ton of rubber in the suspension and the tires aren't exactly canyon-carving worthy. Now what happens if you take all those crap bushings out of the suspension, add a strut-tower brace, and slap on some wide 235/45R18 summer tires all around with absolutely ZERO change to any of the suspension components? I'll guarantee you the car is going to feel like an entirely different animal. The chassis itself is very strong. It's the factory meat that isn't very impressive - not the bones.
have you ever thought of doing a cobalt ss in one of your videos. I think it would be interesting to see your thoughts on it. I seen the review on the cobalt you did here in Houston but the ss is totally different to me.
No one has submitted one
🎵The best part of waking up is The Smoking Tire upload🎵
Lol agreed. Part of my morning routine
Man I wish I lived in Cali, I'd love to let Matt get his hands on my Saab.
I have a diesel Cruze. Very torque.
I've got a cruze and I speed around town day amd night. And would love to get some bolt on and other things.
This thing sounds way better than it has any right to.
This thing seems amazing.
