Nothing wrong with his voice, and this video's great for a lot of more important reasons if you know the history of Brian Wilson and the importance of this song in his life, the story of "Don't Worry Baby" and Ronnie Spector finally covering it 34 years after the fact. Everything about this makes me smile.
the man playing his favorite song of all time, a beautiful thing he got to do this. must have meant the world to him. be my baby utterly changed his life.
This song became Brian Wilson's personal obsession. I put this version, Brian's early 80's production of Mike Love's version in my "Beach Boys covering and covers part 2" playlist with the Spector original. Thanks for the upload!
His voice is great. Considering that he smoked five packs a cigarettes a day along with tremendous amounts of cocaine and alcohol for a better part of a decade, his voice is excellent. Give him some credit.
@@CALVINLNIKONT not really , Brian has never been a great live singer even back in the '60's when he had a beautiful voice. Any way, it's not perfect but if you've heard Brian's other vocals from the late '70's and '80's you'd think this was ok as well. You'd probably knock Beethoven's piano playing after he went deaf as well.
Yes, Brian was obsessed with this song sometimes playing it over and over again. He said he wrote Don't Worry Baby after hearing it. Great to hear Hal Blaine's signature (dotted quarter, eighth, quarter beat) rhythm - in this absolute classic song - "Be My Baby"
Be my baby is in my 60's song book and I know Brian Wilson likes Phil Spector sound and what came out of it. Don't worry baby. Good song. Heard it for the first time in 86. Wayne Johnston
I like this segment; thanks for posting it. It's from the Chapel of Love: Jeff Barry and Friends video. This was a PBS special taped in March of 2000 honoring Jeff and the wonderful songs he's written.
I am glad to see darian and jeremy either side of brian who must of been a great crutch and comfort in managing to help exorcise the demons of the SMiLE era and get him to overcome stage fright
this performance by the beautiful Brian Wilson (1942-#HereandNow), is from "Chapel of Love: Jeff Barry & Friends - TV Special / DVD 2000" (not from a Ronnie Spector tribute concert) - Jeff Barry (1938-#HereandNow) cowrote Be My Baby together with his songwriting partner & wife, Ellie Greenwhich (1940-2009) & Phil Spector (1939-2021) ~1963 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Be_My_Baby - Brian Wilson would write Don't Worry Baby (with lyricist Roger Christian) ~1964 in response to this song. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don%27t_Worry_Baby
can any body answer me on this question please! when brian was young did he have a point in which his voice broke into falsetto. like on the song dont worry baby is it his normal voice or is it his falsetto?
its not the drugs or mental illness; MIKE LOVE broke his spirit. imagine starting a small business and overnight becoming wildly successful and loved the world over because of your sheer genius. having said that, imagine one of your project managers taking over your ideas, taking credit for your hard work and ultimately taking over your business and FIRING YOU. for further proof of this look up: 1988 rock & roll hall of fame the beach boys.
not true, there are many side to the story, Brian loves music for the sake of music but also loves having hit records, Mike would rather have a hit record and remain popular. There was a struggle between Brian and Mike after 1966 but they were still close. Mike always wanted to collaborate with Brian so he could make money from the songs Brian wanted to write with other people. There was the issue of Mike getting screwed out of royalties by Brian's father, who controlled the publishing. We all know what happened: upon bad legal advice Brian went to court and lost big time. Mike was entitled to quite a few song credits but overreached in court and got more credit then he was entitled to, example: Wouldn't it be Nice Mike says he wrote the tag "Sleep tight", well now he has label credit along with Brian and Tony Asher. Tony Asher thought it was bullshit but didn't want to get involved in the fight. That's just one example.
@@gerrydooley951 Gerry, that's not true. Brian's already involved in a lawsuit, suing the lawyer who represented him in that court fight. Mike Love is on record record publicly stating that Brian wrote all songs. 1964: See The Beach Boys live in concert album. Mike introduces graduation day by saying this "This next song is by a group of guys inspirational to our careers because they influence Brian Wilson and his writings. Their group is the 4 freshmen and their song is graduation day." Mike did not say they influence Brian and MY writings. He specifically said they influence Brian Wilson and HIS writings. 1976: The ill fated Brian is back tour. In Anaheim California Mike introduces Brian and he says "I want to introduce you to someone who doesn't travel with us very much but hes here today. His name is Brian Wilson and he is the reason why we're here, musically, PERIOD. Mike did not say Brian and I am the reason why we are here musically. 1983: The Beach Boys are playing in the Kingdome after a Seattle Mariners game. They sang 28 songs, 25 of which were originals. During the instrumental on Good Vibrations Mike walked over to Brian who was sitting at the piano and said "I want to introduce you to the man who wrote 90% of all the songs we sang here today. This is Brian Wilson." In 1964, 1976, and 1983 Mike had those 3 occasions to claim credit for cowriting songs with Brian. He never did. Brian had many collaborators during his years with The Beach Boys. He gave credit to Gary Usher for a cowriting In My Room. He gave co writing credits to Roger Christian for writing all the car songs. Brian gave co writing credits to Bob Norberg for Lonely Sea and other early songs. Brian also gave cowriting credits to Mike , where it was due, on songs such as the warmth of the sun, and a few others Brian was not against giving co writing credits to those who deserved it. The fact of the matter is Mike, who is so money hungry, never once complained about not getting money for 40 years. Then, when Brian wins 22 million dollars in a lawsuit against Capitol, all of a sudden Mike claims he co wrote or wrote 75 beach boy songs. Why is it from 1962 to 1994 Mike never brought up cowriting credits to Brian? It was only after Brian got money that Mike decided all of a sudden was a co writer.
@@whiteandright1958 I stand by what I said based on years of research. The success of Kokomo emboldened Mike to believe that he didn't need Brian anymore to create a hit song so he also felt that it was a good time to go after Brian regarding royalties. To me what Mike says during a concert appearance doesn't mean anything, it's just showmanship. Something else, in 1969 Murry sold the publishing which would eventually cost Brian millions of dollars. When that happened , Mike thought his chances of getting any money were lost, when Brian sued in the late '80's Mike saw his opportunity and took it. He was entitled, but I believe he overreached and won big time. Originally Mike wanted to settle out of court for $750,000, Brian's lawyers said no, they went to court and Mike got 5 mil plus song credits and the belief that he was as important to the BB's as Brian, thus you have the birth of the "Frankenlove" monster.
I know this song is really very good, but never understood Brian's infatuation with the song. I mean, Brian composed a lot of songs far better, but somehow he believed that he never surpassed "Be my Baby". Don't worry Baby and In my Room are just better songs, if we are to consider confessional songs only.
I loved Brian as part of the Beach Boys but now in this video he just seems so out of it! Sad to see, doesnt even look like hes enjoying it, and he is kinda off
Reporter: "What kind of music do you listen to?"
Brian: "I listen to a record called 'Be My Baby' by the Ronettes."
Exactly!

In one sense, this song is what really got Brian Wilson going. He still listens to it daily I think.
Brian's all-time favorite song! Great tribute to Ronnie & Phil
Phil Spector died in prison yesterday. A tragic end to a tragically flawed musical genius.
I read that Brian said that this was the greatest rock song ever written. RIP Ronnie....we love you. We love you too Brian.
Love the way he performed this song. Keep listening to it over and over.

No, his vocal is barely adequate, but it's no surprise, given all he's been through. I have to give him credit for being able to pull it off sat all.
Off-key and terrible!

Fine version of the song created by the genius Brian readily acknowledges. The great Phil Spector.
This is something that I love so much love you Brian ❤️
Tears came to my eyes in that first chorus

That's literally the beat that began Brian's career.
RIP Ronnie Spector 2022 Veronica Bennett,
He always looks so disinterested while performing, but you know he must have been thrilled to perform his favorite song of all time.
Amen
he's just very nervous.
You can see the joy in his eyes, if not his expression

Wow Brian did a great job on the Ronnettes song ❤️😊✌️😎🙏
Thank you so much

Brian Wilson’s older voice is perfect for this performance!
Brian....just a genius. Genious!
Gee, that's a great little clip! Love Brian, and Be My Baby!
so great to see Brian on this! Surprised that Ronnie wasn't out there with him too but was on I can Hear Music..

even Phil Spector was puzzled by his obsession with it. lol
