NEW ABSTRACTION TRIBECA

- James Kalm spends a lot of time thinking about the flow of art history, and how it relates to his “flow” through the various neighborhoods of New York. After some discussions during the Armory Show, it’s become apparent that the New York scene is experiencing some paradigm shifting changes. One of the areas of change is a sense that the New York's tradition of high abstraction was overdue for a resurgence. Your correspondent pastes together three current shows happening within a two-block radius in the supper trendy neighborhood of Tribeca, that might be a harbinger of more abstraction to come. Beginning at Ruttkowski;68 with “Stellen” a presentation by famed Berlin painter Daniel Weissbach which riffs on the late artist’s work in the subways of Berlin, viewers can continue on for a visit to London-based artist Lucienne O’Mara’s “Eternity In An Hour” at Nino Mier Gallery. Developing a grid-based format, O’Mara stacks spontaneous blocks of brushy color slathers forming luscious wall-like compositions. Crossing Broadway, we finally bop into Hasani Sahlehe’s “Song Ideas” his first show at CANADA. These deceptively simple paintings are poured and spread acrylic gel pieces that sing with a rich range of unmodulated pigment. This report was recorded September 14, and 19, 2024. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk

Yes!!! That's fine Art 😮
Thank you! Love the Weissbach Paintings.
James you continually surprise me with artists that are not on my map. These are some stunning painting. Daniel Weissbach must be greatly missed... I had to stop here just to mention how impactful his work is as with all that you review.
Hey , just thanks for posting !
Thank you Kate, thank you everybody.
Over-saturation of figurative painting 😆 I'm a big fan of all of the colours! Thank you Kate & JK
RE: Lucienne O'Mara - Yes, Stanley Whitney for structure but Howard Hodgkins for bravura brushstrokes! All great paintings!
The final painter is really nice. It should be called “ make abstract paintings less boring than before “
Terrific use of colors
The very best abstract painting in this century would be .......The Propitious Garden of the Plane Image, 3rd Version.
Thanks Kate ! Are painting schools teaching abstract theories........are students interested, good question. Illustration still seems to be the road to success.
He used a overhand cutter. Very noisy but precise in the action.
