I love that you teach grisaille, I’ve never seen anyone else teach this technique. I saw a tutorial you did on grisaille a few years ago, I think maybe that was in acrylic or oil. I have some water soluble oils that I’m trying pluck up courage to try, I’m not really interested in acrylic. However, I do have a lot of Inktense products that haven’t fulfilled their potential so I’m delighted by this tutorial - thank you.
This is awesome. I love the longer tutorials. As someone who has never heard of Grisaille painting, I found it very educational and detailed. Thank you Lindsay!
This is the first tutorial I think I can actually do too. I have 6 inktense blocks in the right colours and a fushia pencil. Doing the shadows first is such a good idea and seems fun too!
I’m so glad you talked about values! This is so much important than colors as a general rule and it’s highly overlooked and underrated. More important than brands, than mediums, than the colors themselves. Taught like a pro in a very relaxing way. Thank you!
What a treat to catch this, because I'd just done this one a week ago with colored pencil and marker. I'd made fun of my suspicious creature shadow on the left. Lol Thanks SO much for bringing this grisaille technique, which I'll use next time around.

Wow just wow! Yep I have this set, such a busy day today for me, think hubby is playing half a round of golf after work, should give me time to get the shading done, tomorrow I can relax and do colour. Lindsay this is the second teaching video this week, Lindsay our artist is on fire.
I was wondering why the formal introduction till I realised this is a derwent tutorial 😂. I really love this technique, when I did your olive oil jug tutorial I almost didn't overpaint it as I liked the greyscale version so much.
It’s a great class of value in painting with a technique backing it. Almost irrelevant if she’s using derwents or not, it could be used with a wide range of mediums.
You created such a great tutorial. I've recently started playing with Intensive Pencils and Blocks, they're fantastic but a real learning curve for me. Love your tutorial, it explains so much, I feel like I have a better understanding on how to enjoy using them so much more. Thank you 😊 ✏🖌
Great job. I have the whole set of inktense & don’t use them much. Thanks for the inspiration & lesson. I will drag the ink tense out & give them a whirl.
Absolutely stunning! Best use of Inktense I’ve seen. Also wish you said the comment about teenage boys drawing and moving into painting about three years ago when my son was a gorgeous artist with charcoal and a 8b pencil! Absolutely super but unfortunately he chose art in secondary school as a fun - enjoy the moment when I’m not doing academic stuff subject! He loved drawing. He has a very realistic style and his teacher tried to change his realistic style to Picasso! If I had shown him your version of pencil to paint - he would have loved it! Unfortunately, since getting a great grade in secondary school he’s not picked up a pencil! I believe artist styles should not be messed with! I’ll show him the pencil to paint idea just to try and encourage him to try art again! Thank you
Amazing technique and Tutorial. I have seen a little info on the masters and this idea but this tutorial was so helpful in actually seeing how to work it. The results are so good. I have intense blocks but need to try the pencils. Thank you.
Great tutorial! Definitely going to try this with my Inktense pencils. Caran d’Ache sells a textured palette ( feels like plastic cutting board) that you can scribble on with water soluble media and pick up with a brush and apply to paper/blend. 🙂
Your intro was so fancy and professional, confused me for a minute 😋 (not a criticism of your normal format at all!). What a fantastic technique, this really speaks to me. I learned a lot just from watching you do the underpainting, the coloring was almost incidental. Doing the shading really helped me see the subjects in pieces and shapes, instead of what my brain says the whole composition should look like. Will definitely try this, thanks!
This was a great video. I often use this technique with other mediums like acrylics and ink as the 'grisaille' layer. I did a raven on black using white ink first to paint the values and then I glazed over it. It came out much better than I expected. Inktense make a wonderful medium for this process, too. Oh no, thank you for letting me know! I think many photographers have moved their work to the paid version of unsplash, maybe that's why it's no longer there.
@ I’ve been using your video for the reference b/c you kept the photos on the screen. Thank you so much for that! It isn’t perfect because the screen darkens a bit if you pause it, but it is better than not having the reference at all 😊
I recommend a watercolor paper because of the amount of water we use here. Pastel and mixed media paper might pill at this much water. I have a free paper class tonight at Michael's online. There is a link on my community tab. There will be so much info!
Hi Lindsay, Great tutorial! I saw another tutorial where you used the Grisaille technique. That one was live when Sarah was helping you. I have a QUESTION: Could I use water soluble graphite for the grey undertones for this technique? I don't have Intense to use. Thank you.
That would lift and get muddy. Do you have a black waterproof ink? India or acrylic would work for the grayscale and then you can go over with watercolor.
I’m starting a new one with Lemons in a bowl on a white cloth. I made the background purple . Should my shadows be that color too or can I use the black?

Although the watercolor set also on sale, it’s at a lower percentage. I hope this was an ok message to leave here. I’m just so darned excited about this, I had to share!
Nice!
Could you spray a fixative over the top? Derwent also has a blender that will work over the last layer of color.
Sure!
Loved this! I think I might try it! Also, just letting you know that I don’t think the reference photo is available on Unsplash anymore. The link didn’t work. I didn’t try looking up the photographer, though, so it might just be that a different link is needed …
Oh no, thank you for letting me know! I think many photographers have moved their work to the paid version of unsplash, maybe that's why it's no longer there.
@ I’ve been using your video for the reference b/c you kept the photos on the screen. Thank you so much for that! It isn’t perfect because the screen darkens a bit if you pause it, but it is better than not having the reference at all 😊
Love. Ill definitely try. Can this be done on the sand grain, mi teintes, or cold press paper?
I recommend a watercolor paper because of the amount of water we use here. Pastel and mixed media paper might pill at this much water. I have a free paper class tonight at Michael's online. There is a link on my community tab. There will be so much info!
@@thefrugalcrafter oh yes i am signed up for tonight!
@@thefrugalcrafter would you say the same to use watercolor paper for graphitint
Paintvwhat you see. Look at those undertones. Black is very harsh tho.
@@thefrugalcrafter I ended up using Indigo.
Is this paper 'gessoed'?
No you want an absorbant paper for this.
So you’re using just black in the underpainting?
Yup
