The Unity of Body and Soul [This Is What It Means to Be Christian] | THEOLOGY OF THE BODY

  • Human beings are utterly unique in the entire created order! We are neither pure spirits nor merely animals. We are a unity of matter and spirit - a unity of body and soul.
    Most people today think of themselves as spirits housed in bodies, from which they will be liberated at death. But this is not what it means to be Christian!
    As Christians, we believe in the resurrection of the body. The separation of body and soul is utterly unnatural and is a result of the fall. In order to have an authentic Christian faith, we must orient ourselves towards the unity of body and soul which is inherent in God’s design.

    This is great and life changing! Thank you very much! I renounce all Gnosticism and Gnostic and ways of thinking about the soul and body in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ! I am my body. My soul and body are ONE!!! Hallelujah! Praise be to Yahweh!

    Flesh, flesh, flesh! 😅 Flesh is good, and being upgraded by redemption through our Lord Jesus Christ, is VERY good!
    Thank you for explaining so well this fundamental point so often missed, Christopher! May God and our Most Holy Mother Mary bless you and protect you always 😊🙏

    Can we also think of the body as the form of the soul, being that the body is the form we come in and is the means by which somebody’s identity as a soul is expressed? The body is indeed the physical expression of the soul, is it not? I can’t help but see “expression” as one in the same with “form”. Like Christ being the Divine Expression of God. In His incarnation, He is the form that God comes in to express Himself and make Himself known to us.

    Isn’t it an overstatement to say seperation from the body is death? After death, if saved, the soul/the self goes to god until the ressurrection. So in that sense I am more alive being with god than I am currently alive in the body. And then even more alive after the resurrection?

    2:45 To be fair... the context of the "I think, therefore I am" quote was in Descartes long, careful, extremely meticulous proof for God's existence, in which he first had to prove his own existence and the trustworthiness of his senses. He wasn't trying to be subversive, like other philosophers. Maybe it'd be better to pick on "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law."

    Man does not have a soul, man is a soul. Add the spirit (breath of life) and man becomes a living soul.

      All living thing has a soul
      Even animals and plants
      Human has Rational Soul
      Which we call Spirit
      That is given by God,
      Ang only soul that survive death
      For it should be back to the Giver which is God and promised a ressurection of its body in the end of time

      No the spirit is not the soul.
      For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.

    Humans are the only creatures on Earth that are Spiritual Beings, just like angels. We are made in God’s image. The only difference is that angels are “pure spirits” whereas humans are “embodied spirits”. Human who’ve departed are “disembodied spirits”.

    We are embodied Souls.

    • @Rome_77

      You’re the composite of an embodied soul and an ensouled body. That is what is known as a human person - the composite of body and soul - a living human being. When the soul is separated from the body by death, the human person ceases to exist but their soul lives on.

    • @GenXer82

      @@Rome_77 When a person dies, they are a disembodied spirit…which is a temporary state until the resurrection. Though not a complete form, they still exist and can intercede for us.

    • @Rome_77
      @Rome_77 2 роки тому

      @@GenXer82 death is the point of corruption where your spirit is separated from its body. The disembodied spirit of the person will live on in the afterlife either experiencing beatitude purgation or damnation but YOU are not your spirit. If the human person is the body+soul COMPOSITE… I don’t escape my body to live on in an incorporeal afterlife as a spirit…, (because again - I’m a composite, not a spirit…. ). The resurrection of this composite (embodiment) is the true “life after death”.

    • @Rome_77
      @Rome_77 2 роки тому

      @@GenXer82 yes, the souls still exist. And the blessed souls of the saints can intercede for us. For example, the soul of St. Peter is alive and can pray for us but properly speaking, Peter is dead and will rise again as a person only at the general resurrection.
      We say, “Peter, pray for us” but this is synecdoche or shorthand for “the Soul of Peter, Pray for us”.
      The view that the person survives death and is kept in existence by solely by their separated soul is a view known as Survivalism. The opposing view and the one Aquinas seems to hold is called Corruptionism - the idea that the person ceases to exist once the soul is separated from the body.

    Come on down off the theological pulpit. You make my head hurt with the fabricated theological distinctions warning me of misunderstanding God's intent. You are selling ideas that truly need to be composted and rethought through. Yes we've had philosophers of old come up with various ideas that can be blamed with causing biases in modern day understandings but the church must take (at least) equal responsibility for spreading misunderstandings with zealous advice from theoretical theologians. Please no more (self) righteous theologians that have not learned to imagine outside their specific church boundaries to encompass reality.
