The dealer you bought it from put it in for a service, not an inspection. Sounds like the specialist didn't even look for the noise, because the dealer likely told them just to service it. Should've been a red flag that they put it in for an inspection at your request, but no inspection was carried out. Shame on the dealer.

As a woman, in modern times, mechanics try to pull the wool over my eyes all the time. Luckily I grew up working on automotives in my dad's shop, so I know a thing or two about cars. With today's vehicles and the massive computer-driven technology, I bought a code reader and diagnostic reader and it has helped me a lot when purchasing any vehicle today. I still have rounds with mechanics who don't know me, but they find out the hard way and I save so much money by being prepared before I go to purchase a newer vehicle or troubleshoot problems. I am in a wheelchair now due to a debilitating injury, so it limits me in some repairs and servicing of my vehicles. Purchasing a code reader and diagnostic reader will give you a heads-up of what is really going on with your vehicles. Paying out a few hundred dollars now for a couple of devices will save you thousands later.

Not a lot of difference in men and women's knowledge of newer cars. Neither in general know a lot and it's easy to miss many things. There are some who are knowledgeable but not that many as a percentage. Too often getting someone to do a pre buy inspection does nothing.

Given our long-term ownership practice with purchased a Mercedes AG extended "new car warranty".. The customary MB new car warranty is 5 years, 50K miles here in the US. . Oh, man, so sorry you had to deal with all of that! I had a '21 GTS that I absolutely loved. Unfortunately, a kid on his phone ran a red light and T-boned me and it was totaled. My insurance company took 3 1/2 months to total it (!!) and then I had to wait another 3 months or so to get a new '24 GTS - which was now more powerful but more than 10% more than what the previous one cost. It's great to drive, but I don't like all the additional plastic on the front or the haptic control panel on the center console. Oh well. Anyway, enjoy the GTS...it's such a good car to drive (well, when the timing chain isn't chewing up the gears anyway).

Sorry to hear of your experience! I had a similar one with my C7 RS6 last year, the car went to Audi for a recall and they screwed it up, consequently it spent 4 month in the dealership and they had the engine out twice as they didn't listen to what I told them was a problem. It went wrong the day I picked it up again and they had it for a few more days. Fortunately this was all warranty work as I paid for extended warranty on it, otherwise it would have been well over £15k in work. When I got it back working, I went and part exchanged it for my first 911, best thing I have ever done!

A couple of months later after a couple of days of rain, the Sunroof leaked. The interior was absolutely soaking. Electrics didn't work. It took Porsche three weeks to fix it. Sold it and back to BMW now.

If you have to stretch your budget tight just to purchase the car, it's going to get much worse for you from there.

When you find a really good mechanic like the last one you went to, stick with them. Research a car before you buy it. Porsche, Audi both have the timing chain and gear problems. Very well known. At mileage, you replace as if they're an air filter. You're right to not buy a car in a hurry. Go to Italy and when you come back, the inspection will have been done and a competent mechanic will tell you that you need a timing chain and likely guides and sprockets because "they all do that".

My friend, just enjoy your Macan and don’t mind the negative comments. I own the same year and model. These Macans are a blast to drive. For those like us who have owned 911s and caymans, the macan is truly a Porsche. My advice is, change the oil every 3k miles and change the transfer case fluid every 30k miles. Those turbos burn oil pretty fast and the transfer case is prone to failure mainly due to the factory recommending the fluid replacement at 160k miles.

The transfer box failed on it with less than 30K miles on the clock which undermined my confidence in the brand and the main dealer customer service too. Then as the value of the car itself got to around the £15K mark, a 7K repair bill would be the last straw. So I decided it was as time to part company rather than risk it. The pressure to keep a Porsche in absolutely pristine condition is like no other as well and it just spoiled the ownership experience for me. I’d never buy another.

This addition should have been included in the original quote, but because it was missed out, this was reflected in the lower repair quote. When the engine was stripped, you received the phone call informing you of this additional elevated cost. Overall, its not good as if you are a dealership, you have knowledge of this engine and fully understand what's involved and the total costs.

Listing to people on the LandRover forum, who have stretched their finances to buy a secondhand car and then they are in trouble when it goes wrong and have to pay out thousands to fix it.
2010-2015 onwards, cars are just so expensive to fix. Loads with tech that we don’t really need or use and engines modified to meet government emissions standards which cause the components to wear out more quickly

The supplying dealer 'misdiagnosed' the problem, allowing you to drive the car only to cause more wear and damage, to a certain degree they owe you some sort of good will gesture payment, for them to misdiagnose a normal injection sound with a worn chain and sprockets is very poor indeed.

We have a Diesel Macan and have the Porsche extended warranty it costs approximately £750 per year (if you delete the recovery provision) we have had a couple of issues fixed under the warranty in the last 4 years, when you take the warranty out the dealer will do a 100 plus point inspection, I wouldn’t buy a Porsche without the Porsche warranty, interestingly the warranty for the basically similar Audi Q5 is about double the cost.

  • @mattscars

Oh dear. Have a look at vag technics youtube channel. As the v6 in the macan is basically the same engine as the v6 in the audis, and the macan itself a Q5 there are some well documented issues with this engine. The cam followers are the other expense and could cause it to drop a valve... vag technic recommend a 70k interval to have the followers changed so might be the next job if you keep it.

  • @rogerblackwood8815

You could go back to the dealer with the video evidence and the invoice and suggest the damage to the sprockets and other associated parts were a direct result of their negligence. Obviously they would not be liable for the whole bill as you have two years use, the pads and rear suspension for example. But the sprockets would almost certainly have not worn to the degree they had and would not have needed replacement if they had picked up the issue you were alerting them to?
I would suggest you ask for a contribution to the repairs based on this evidence and suggest a claim in the small claims court would only cost a few pounds to put into action. You will be surprised how often that works, I have used it on more than a few occasions to get people to see sense👍👍

However, VAG motors are notorious for timing chain, rocker etc failures.
Take a look at the Polish guys who do nothing else but those motors on VAG Technic UA-cam. They apparently fail at all mileages exactly as in your car.

Porsche = premium price, but absolutely not a premium product sadly. Poorly equipped compared to other brands at the same or cheaper price point (e.g. Mercedes, BMW). Performance no better than those brands, but there is a cachet about the name Porsche and it’s great to own one at some point in life. Just beware the reliability can be pretty bad and the models which stem from non-Porsche roots, have been created purely for marketing and profit reasons by VAG, I would avoid these money pits. Thing is, Porsche main dealers are scandalously expensive, anywhere else selling a Porsche is a risky purchase as a main dealer didn’t want it. Hope your Macan is now trouble free at least for a while after you spent so much to fix it
