Exactly! It’s ridiculous the amount of people pissed just because they already own the a7S III and then Sony released a much better camera for professional video work at similar price range. They just can’t deal with it. The world we live. Anyway. Amazing camera.
I just sold my Pocket 6K, loved it, but mostly being a "one man band" I bought the FX3 and so far really happy. Very light weight and autofocus, In body IS is amazing. I got tired of stressing about whether I was in focus or not and lugging my rigged P6K all day was taxing to say the least... Most of my videos are on the web for viewing and not many would ever notice the difference. You forgot to mention false colors missing also..
@@vazvideo It is funny how, despite clearly marketing it to people who are often "one-man bands," Blackmagic stripped the camera of all features that are indispensable to one-man bands.

Of course AF in FX3’s is so reliable that it completely took that stress away from me as well. When I used it for the first time I was blown away, and the image quality is pretty good as well for small one-man show kind of setups. It's like literally you stole my thoughts 😂😂 I had same thought when I saw this "cinema" camera was released. And what bugged me the most after everything, was no shutter angle. Hope sony adds this in a firmware update
I think a big difference to consider is how the FX3 manages the ergonomics for the top handle audio attachment as opposed to Sony A7Siii’s handles its alternative, the K3M. The FX3’s handle system actually allows for safe expansion from the top handle for a monitor where the A7Siii has little to no flexibility on making a sturdy setup with it. This makes FX3’s audio interface viable in more shooting configurations and situations.
I didnt realize it couldnt even do true 24p 😵 thats just ridiculous and no shutter angle? Those two things i cant forgive. I can maybe forgive not shooting raw since its so darn small but 24p and shutter angle are bare minimum
One of my favorite reviewers on the UA-cam. Can you make a tutorial on how are you doing this masterpiece videos? Like guys, so this man would see it and not ignore.
@@THEDPJOURNEY Honestly waiting badly for you to reach 100k subs, wish I could do it with a click of a button! Cant wait to see how this master piece was created. May be doing a tutorial on this master piece could help you reach 100k faster ;)
I'm sick of corporate America stroking us with the tug of war between features that are nothing more then a few lines of code. They consistently remove good things when they add something to protect their 8000 dollar cinema cameras. They will never give us what we want in a hybrid camera. SO,,, I split my needs into 2 cameras. I have a BMPCC 6 for video, and a Canon M50 for still pictures hanging around my neck. Separate tools for separate jobs. It's solved so many of my gripes. STOP BUYING HYBRIDS!!! And maybe these greedy capitalist sloths will respond. Stop being enablers.
One of the few posts that doesn't laud the camera as a feat of magic (Blackmagic?). Given the lack of those most important features, I'm still surprised at how it keeps getting rated so highly. And as for all those 1/4" mounting points, they quickly become moot when you attach the handle. Can you use the remaining two at all when the handle is attached. BTW, the Blackmagic cameras don't have all those mounting points (the top one only being a locating point for a cage) because the body is a carbon fibre composite and would require a metal shell to be durable enough for mounting accessories.
Yeah man... SONY has a lot of fanboys out there. I judge cameras objectively, I don’t care what the brand label says. And yes about BM. I’m actually planning to release a detailed analysis about it next week
@@THEDPJOURNEY They do have a solid support base, there's no doubt about that. However, one thing that I've noticed since UA-cam started recommending me FX3 videos after seeing your, is the extent to which people are rigging the FX3. One of the constant annoyances for me are the ongoing statements that you have to rig out a BMPCC4K/6K before it's usable, yet no one seems to say the same about any other camera and especially the new FX3. I've recently seen FX3 rigs that make my somewhat chunky BMPCC4K rig look positively compact.
FX3 is a complete FAIL!!! Damn Sony. I didn’t think you’d follow Canon’s foot steps in becoming a “functionality limiter”. This camera has no place in a videographer’s kit. FA-Q Sony.
And yet Sony make the Venice and F65 which are true cinema/Hollywood cameras and yet Canon and Blackmagic are merely prosumer options. No one shoots a movie on any those cameras. The FX3 and A7SIII are built upon true film heritage and tech regardless of NDs and featured you’d have to jump up the range for.
People who mkae reviews have to begin to remember its hotter in other countries. FX3 is perfect for panama because of the fan. The humidity anlone is worse than the heat.
Nice video. The Sigma fp does everything the FX3 should have done including tiltable EVF, timecode, angled shutter, DCI and it shoots high bitrate 444 RAW. Throw on a cage a calibrated monitor and a PL-mount and it’s a liable cinema camera. For less than 3 grand
Couldn’t agree more. I actually feel that the A7S3 is the superior camera. The EVF, while not as useful for shooting, comes in clutch when reviewing footage in the field. The FX3’s lack of second mounting hole on bottom makes a cage a necessity. The worst in class rear LCD should have been replaced with a new panel with a 16:9 aspect ratio, not the current photo style 4:3 aspect ratio. It also should have the menu system from the FX line... not photo line. A fail in so many ways.
The problem is that Netflix says that this camera is approved for making movies for them. The A7siii does not make the list. So, in that case it now doesn't become a pretend cinema camera. It's all on who allows you to do what. It's one of the cheapest cameras that you can use for filming with them.
Being NETFLIX approved doesn’t make it a cinema camera. Netflix is not an official “standard” that’s approved anywhere, I doubt it’ll ever be. Besides, you can submit your film to Netflix, if they like it, they’ll buy it even if shot in your phone. Their camera list is mainly for movies they produce
It's a pro-sumer camera like everything else that has the "cinema" marketing spiel behind it. These things are aimed towards videographers, documentarians and to a lesser extent youtube creators. These won't show up on any production with an actual budget.
I bought the fx3 yesterday and used it side by side with my a7siii. Tbh imo. I have no clue why the fx3 exist. It’s the same camera through and through. Sure it has mounting points and a xlr. Some buttons are in a better place. But put a cage on the a7siii and it’s a fx3 on steroids. Then just add the k3m and boom. No reason whatsoever to look at a fx3. I hate that there is no hotshoe adapters on the fx3 as that is crucial for video gear. I do like the zoom rocker but that’s it. I’m returning it today. Haha sorry for the rant. Just a weird camera. Nothing about it says cinema. thank you for breaking it down. Something not a lot of people have done. I returning my fx3 as it simply is not a small compact cinema camera. Its a fancy a7siii
@Edward Gilbert Glad I have read your comment.. I'm torn since a week on which one to buy.. I was really attracted by the beauty of the body design, but indeed it makes no sense.. Ive been shooting a documentary during an entire month aboard a rescue ship, in very challenging situations and the A7SIII just performed brilliantly. The K3M should do the job..
@@Superjeanmarc haha yea trust i was torn myself and spent days losing sleep over it. It wasn’t worth it. If you already own the a7siii save yourself some money and put it towards something else useful.
@@eddie_g I do not own the a7sIII, I used a rental one on a documentary shoot and now am about to buy one for myself, but the FX3 showed up and confused me .. The DP journey put me back on the right track.. haha
Your video was comprehensive but your wrong in a lot of ways the fx 3 is a compact cinema camera just by image quality alone, sure you can nit pic but for that price range you would be a fool, a cinema camera is one that can deliver high quality footage that can be manipulated well in post. For the price range it’s a great device
Cinema camera is not just about the quality of the sensor, that’s my point. There are so many other things that come into play when it comes to calling it a cinema camera, it needs to fit within a film production workflow in many ways. I’m planning to have a full episode talking about what a cinema camera is, so stay tuned to that one and probably you will agree with me. Thanks again for watching
Personally, they missed one big feature, internal variable ND filter. On top of that , buttons layout, record output setting are not so cinematic enough. Hope Sony improves their IBIS, at least beat Panasonic S1H. ( 3999 euros in France ) we can imagine about price to feature ratio.
We don't want internal ND filter. Because internal ND filters are not a True ND filter; they are just a darkener filter. For Cinema we use external Mitomo True-ND Filter. Only I dislike it, because it does not have DCI 4K; it's just an UHD. Even Cine-Tone we don't want on this travel C-Mera (Cine Camera); I can change tone by computer, while editing. But it's a great camera for a traveler.
FX3 is a far superior camera than the a7S III for professional video work. It’s a simple fact. XLR inputs, active cooling system, mounting points, top handle included among other solid features. Also Sony will drop soon a firmware update for shutter angle and 24fps. People are just mad that this camera has an amazing image quality and pro features for much less money than other cinema cameras. It’s ridiculous all the hate you see on the internet and biased opinions. This camera is a beast, deal with it.
The video started with me saying "The FX3 is a GREAT CAMERA"... Half of this video I was praising the camera. The only thing I'm "Mad" about is how they marketed it as a "Cinema" camera which was misleading.
I'm just annoyed this came so soon after the A7S3. I invested in the A7S3 but if the FX3 came out at the same time I would have easily taken it over the A7S3 for it's form factor, button placements, and tally lights. But its not worth selling a new camera to get a slightly newer one that is basically the same.
I think the Cinema camera license is expensive than the photo camera and they realized FX 3 under photo camera license for Cinematographer to sale at an affordable price.
That license you’re referring to was only present in Europe. But it’s not in effect anymore. They’re both treated the same as far as I know. Haven’t hear about a “cinema camera” license anyway. Don’t think that exists actually. Thanks for watching 😉
@@THEDPJOURNEY I heard about this license last year. They were talking about the USA. I will try to find a video. If I will I will send you, waiting for more videos ✌️
It's a very interesting camera body for someone who's maybe looking to step up from something like an A7iii, but the price jump is just a bit too far I think and the footage from the Siii/FX3 looks weirdly blotchy to my eyes. I think it's the aggressive in-camera denoising but I'm not sure.
Im an FX30 user (so really, the smaller brother to this camera in sensor size) and here are my points of using this camera 1) Agree. Why shutter speed and not shutter "angle" is used in this camera? Is very odd to me. To be shooting at 1/50 when i should be at 1/48 but that doesnt even matter. If its a "cinema" camera, it should be shutter "angle". Honestly, maybe just a simple firmware update to fix like how they gave the A7SIII S-Cinetone. But Who knows if that will happen 2) I think its only an FX3 problem but the FX30 I believe (i dont mess with time code too much) DOES come with Time Code 3) Agree on the DCI 4k with shooting at 4096x2160 vs 3840x2160. I do see aswell that this camera can have software update to fix this as apparently this is actually a 6K shooter just downscaled to 4k. So not sure of that aswell. 4) I think the 23.98 was fixed with the FX30 because 24p is what is the option on the FX30 - again lol a software update the FX3 can get so easily. 5) as far as the screen goes - its a "cinema" camera. I never, ever, ever, use the built in screens. I use external monitors like the atomos ninja V. I want that screen for settings and thats it. As far as monitor placement goes, Small Rig makes this very weird device that actually extends the handle size, gives it finger grooves, and gives you MANY mounting points on the top handle and I can easly use the top handle with my monitor attached 6) the single base plate mount is again fixed with caging the camera, which most are going to do with the camera anyway. I do believe these are discussions sony has when designing the camera knowing their customers will infact cage these cameras. Again, im an FX30 user, not FX3 - since im coming from an A6600 now upgrading to something that was in the same price point at my A6600 and already invested in APSC e-mount lenses - it just made sense for me. I felt that 4k 120fps, active stabilization ontop of IBIS and OSS lenses, along with sony's amazing autofocus....the price of the FX30, 10bit color, higher recording bitrates - it was a no brainer for me. With the missing "software" features, ill agree its not a true "cinema" camera - but my god it gets the job done and it gets it done very, very well. I think this camera was more marketed towards users who want to enter the cinema world but without breaking the bank (like myself). I wouldnt exactly compare the FX3 to the BMPCC as thats not even full frame but thats a different conversation. Sensor size doesnt seem to bother me. I have not checked to see if atomos has released its firmware update yet - but with the FX30 (and possible the FX3 aswell) we will have the ability to shoot ProRes RAW. My last point that im unsure if is still true with the A7SIII is external monitors actually disable face/eye detection auto focus as my FX30 does not. Super big deal for me. It does lack alot of true "cinema" features, but to me? It does exactly what I want it to do.
fx3 is an attempt to earn more on a good camera which is a7s3 ;) It's just a converted a7s3, nothing else. But it is more expensive (I don't know why?) and cheaper to produce (EVE is more expensive to produce then handle and fan), so the profit for Sony is bigger :)
Really? Does the a7S III have XLR inputs for professional audio? An active cooling system for reliability? Mounting points and top handle for ergonomics? Do you use a camera crushed in your face for shooting video?
@@FlipDeRiviera "professional audio" = then you need an extra person for audio only ;) But... for example... a7s3 + Cage + H4Npro. It doesn't look that good, but it gives 4 audio channels instead of 2, and gives you much better control over the sound, cause there is a limiter and compressor in the external recorder. It's still cheaper then fx3 and you still have EVF ;) Yes... there is no active cooling system, but the problem of overheating in a7s3 is practically non-existent. FAN is not an argument for me to buy fx3
I've been doubting since like 2 weeks in which one to buy and I was decided on the FX3 until you made me doubt again.. haha.. This is a torture. I already knew everything you said in the video, but there is also a factor that is very difficult to transmit, is just how "inspiring" (or should I say desirable) a camera can be.. I've hold the camera in a store and immediately wanted it.. something that doesn't happen with the a7siii which looks so impersonal and so 'photo' centered... So basically now my only fear is that if I buy the a7siii and Sony ultimately releases a FX3-only firmware upgrade that adds shutter angle, 24p, DCI 4k and WAVEFORM MONITOR!! (you did not mention this missing feature!) or false color, then, yes I'd be super sad... In any case it's remarkable how camera manufacturers master the art of frustration... I want the ergonomics and functionalities of an S1H (That Varicam-like menu... , anamorphic desqueeze, shutter angle, waveform... aahhhh) in compact FX3 body with Sony autofocus and IS. Is that asking too much?
Yeah SONY are weird with their releases. the create a great camera with very weird quirks that are fixable with FW update, but they just don't. Yeah waveform was never there in the SONY. I should've mentioned it yes! Good point If you wanna go cinema camera, then S1H honestly
@@THEDPJOURNEY actually I don’t wanna go “cinema” in the proper sense of the term. I’m a run and gun documentary shooter and I’m obsessed with min size , weight and being discreet. To be honest, in November I shot a documentary for Vice News aboard a rescue ship saving migrants in the Mediterranean Sea. It was a very challenging situation with kind of “war situation” as we witnessed a shipwreck with 118 in the water (6 people died). During 36 days I shot with the A7siii and the camera is a beast without doubt but still, inside a photo oriented body and it’s somewhat frustrating. Even if don’t do “cinema” as a dop in controled environment, my work would greatly be facilitated with these “cinema features” that the FX3 misses .. really. And speaking of those mounting points, I’d love to see reviews where they are actually used.. and not only mentioning that you can potentially rig your camera. In my case I’d love to see a set up with a 5” monitor, a Lav mic receiver unit and a shotgun as this is my day to day. Regarding the S1H I’m find it too bulky, the lenses are a problem for me and after tasting the a7siii auto focus, there is simply no way back :) Also I love that the Sony is full frame across all formats, codecs and frame rates (the 10% crop at 120p is forgivable). I hate when my 16mm turns into a 25mm just for the sake of going slow motion. Finally I wanted to add that your motion graphics on your videos are so neat .. I’m always amazed by the amount of work it must require. Great channel, learned a lot here. Thanks again.
Bigger screen, true 24fps, internal timecode, DCI 4k options. That's all it needed to be a true cinema camera and mostly could be added with firmware update.
I have never been on a narrative big-budget shoot where timecode was a thing. External TC is a holdover from film camera days to ensure the camera was running accurately at the project frame rate. It was also used to sync cameras to tv screens on camera. Broadcast multicamera productions obviously need time code and sync.
I suspect there will be firmware updates for the 24fps, just like the FX6/9 got. As for the timecode, it's a shame but something I can do without. I look at the FX3 and the A7Siii as two models of the same car with different features. One isn't necessarily 'better' than the other, but each have features that appeal to different 'drivers.' And finally, not having built-in NDs is perfectly reasonable for a camera at this price. If you want more cinema features, you'll have to pay for them. This is, as you said, a bridge camera between the world of mirrorless video cameras and cinema cameras. Is it a revolution? No. Is it leagues beyond what was available even 4 years ago? Entirely. The idea of having autofocus on a cinema camera a couple of years ago was unheard of, if only meagre. It's easy to talk specs on cameras and how they don't live up to your requirements as a reviewer -- but until you show how these so-called failures disappoint in a real world scenario, it's just reading words off of a spec sheet.
Interesting take on the FX3, even if you take the word "cinema" out of the equation, it still does possess cinematic qualites that you notice whether it's from the a7siii or the fx6/9 etc. While it does shoot 23.98 fps, as opposed to a true 24p with a shutter angle of 172.8, I'm fine shooting on 25P for the majority of my projects. I agree with you on certain things like a FW update to make more functionalities assessable from a D.P perspective, but straight out of the box, I wouldn't invest $6500.00 into the FX3 right now, maybe later down the track if they make a MKii version.
In my opinion..Sony shouldn't have released the S3..maybe it was pressure bc everyone was waiting on a successor to the S2..and they had left over bodies laying around and just said F@k it put the stuff inside our regular body and call it the S3..lol joking ..but really though..Sony could have easily side stepped the conrovesry and liked announced the cancellation of the S line and say sorry for the wait but here is something new... and introduce this new FX "3" line..Yes people would have been like what?!..But they didn't do this and hence causing themselves issues with consumers..it is messed up!..Sony had this ready and waiting probably at the same time the S3 released..and yet they let people buy the S3 of course..then months later..oh wait we have this the FX3.basically the same thing..with a different form factor..and justifiably some people were pissed after they just had bought the S3..But really they shouldn't have released the S3 and just cancelled it..consumers would have accepted the FX3..with no question and could move on and be like ok..in my opinion the FX3 is better body and form factor for concentrating on video..its definitely a good starter for consumers who are gong into the FX line..
I cannot wait for DCI 4K in firmware update on both a7siii and fx3. They can do it easily since both of these cameras are doing oversampling from 10 mp to 8mp for 3840x2160. Instead of that oversampling they can just give us normal 4096x2160. I know I can get that resolution in RAW but I want to get DCI in internal recording as well!
From a color science perspective, how do you like Sony compared to say the Panasonic S1H or even the S1. I realize that the Sony's autofocus can't be beat but what about the image?
Good video. What I think it’s that the give those feature as an actual cinema camera so the FX6 would have no reason to exist. The FX3 has just few aspects that make it better than A7S III in terms of material and the fan. But overall it’s not so an improvement to the mirrorless model.
Thank you Sir! you explained how the universe work and mars is not yet fixed to live in. In general Sony FX3 is not good of what we expect? you mention the 4 missing cinema line. It's sounds like Mustang Car with KIA Engine, Sony FX3 is good but its awkward when they mention Cinema line. I'm looking for this kind of reviews in awhile, Thank you very much Sir.
well, lots of cinema camera doesn't have built-in ND (like RED). NDs are find mostly in ENG cameras and lots of camcorders. For me, built-in ND is not a "cinema" feature like True 24p, DCI 4K, shutter angle and timecode.
Great rundown as usual, Sherif. Just a few random things (1) I've heard FX3 skintones tend more toward magenta, while a7s III skintones have a greenish tint; (2) the FX3 will have support in FCP X for both WB and ISO in ProRes RAW (not that it matters to me now, since I've switched over to Resolve 17); (3) the resolution is so poor on the LCD of the a7s III that I often find myself having to use the magnifier to see whether there are any zebras in the highlights; and (4) five months later and I'm still waiting for Tilta to start shipping the Arca Swiss QR plate for their a7s III cage so I can mount it on my Gitzo!
@@jasonnowwhat5041 My bad. I think it was the a1 that had more magenta skin tones, not the FX3. Atomos writes: Users will benefit from the full flexibility offered by the ProRes RAW format as Atomos ensures that all the camera White Balance and ISO/ Exposure Offset adjustments will be available within Final Cut Pro to the user. So yeah, it's confirmed. But like I said, if you're serious about color, you'd be better off using Resolve.
@@JonPais gotcha! But you are right about raw. Just looked it up and Atomos issued a development press release. To me that’s cool because the I refuse to shoot and use raw if I can’t adjust white balance and iso after the fact.
@@TimandLauren the a1 has skintone slightly shifted toward magenta and away from green of the a7s III, while apparently the FX3 is identical to the a7s III.
Great video and 100% agree, although having used both I did prefer the shooting experience on the FX3 and it’s made me difficult to go back to A7S iii. I am no Sony fan boy as my fave camera is the S1H. There was just something about the FX3, the weight/ the button layout and size in my hand that i enjoyed. Either way both great cameras and if you own A7s iii you’re more thank okay
I am on the verge of getting the fx3. I would dump all my money right now if it added true 24fps and shutter angle! I just hope it comes in an update soon.
Thank you so much for the kind words. I’m trying to simplify the complex technical things about DP’ing. And I’m glad people find it informative. Even though I suck as an audio guy. I’m honestly used to have audio recordist on set and never cared about how to record it till I started my channel. So thanks for your patience
I have not used SONY cinema cameras before, but I think the features that FX3 lacks are a firmware away, like shutter angle, time code and waveform false color etc.
Happy you're back DP Journey! Absolutely love your videos! The FX3 doesn't make any sense at all to me. Even that top handle they made should have had a nice spot for a monitor but it's so awkwardly placed directly on top of the lens. Seems like Sony just got lazy with this one.
The thing is, what works for me might not work for you. that’s why I have this episode to kind of help you find the answer that works for YOU. But to answer your question still, I would buy the FX3 if I didn’t already have the 7S3. But that’s me
You nailed it. Actually the A7S3 is a great camera which basically offers the same features than the FX3. The only thing that I really miss is the fan for Wildlife filmmaking in hot environments.
Three mounting points on the top and the top handle uses two 1/4-20. That leaves one hole on the top and sides. Not really a cage replacement? This is a pretty honest review. Expect the second gen FX3 or a mid-life refresh to add TC and larger screen; Sony doesn’t want to compete with themselves and cannibalize FX6 sales?
Having 5 points after all is better than no points at all. It’s not a cage for sure, but it’s close enough. A new feature we haven’t seen anywhere yet and is worth the attention. And yeah they don’t want to cannibalize their own FX line… but they created something that doesn’t fit in that line at all after all… that’s my point
Hi, Thanks for your videos. I´ve got the FX3 and I am looking for a monitor now. I do want a 7" monitor, so the ninja V is no option. The blackmagic video assist 12 G 7" would be my option. Will I be able to record ProRess Raw in the best possible way?
Thank you for this very candid and clear opinion, and well-made, concise review. I so agree with you, though I am going to buy the Sony fx3 with a heavy heart, especially for the lack of time code (I use it a lot). As a self-shooting director I need some of these features, and am leaving out the A7sIII only because of the cooling fan (I work in super hot areas, and often have long hours of continuous shooting). I was considering BMPCC 6K pro, but because of the many run and gun situations and hand held shooting I do, dropped it in favour of the FX3.
if you want the handle, the fx3 is a no brainer (over a a7s3+ k3m) . However, the massive disappointment of no ND. (not mentioned on this video??) I would easily pay an extra 1000 if it came with a built in ND
I absolutely agree with you on this video. Calling it a “cinema camera” - does not make it a cinema camera. Very informative video! Tbh I’m waiting for your bmpcc6k pro review... cheers!
Great video! I guess the FX3 is the new hybrid, cinema/video, instead of photo/video. Detachable viewfinder is a great idea! I’d put another smart hotshoe on the left side for the viewfinder. Sometimes I do walk & shoot only viewing thru the viewfinder (it helps to hv a spotter). I’m not sure why it’s so hard for Sony to get basic things right (just copy Panasonic and add autofocus); it may be on purpose though, so they can just release a new version & get everyone to talk about it. The FX3 is still appealing tho; I’d take it over the a7siii any day, mostly for all day filming with less noise. Thanks for this video!
keep in mind FX3 shoots photos as well just like S3, viewfinder is better maybe for photos yes, but not necessary. And yeah, weird they can't get things right, but i agree.. possibly intentional, to make you buy more and more. I like the analogy of Panasonic hahaha... yeah panasonic knows what filmmakers want in terms of user experience and customizability, but they suck at AF, FPS and rolling shutter

It's like literally you stole my thoughts 😂😂
I had same thought when I saw this "cinema" camera was released. And what bugged me the most after everything, was no shutter angle.
Hope sony adds this in a firmware update
Yeah all DPs were scratching their heads when they heard "Cinema"
haha same to me
I was also disappointed after switching from gh5s, where i got shutter angle and DCI 4k.
I wanted to buy a FX3 as a B-Cam to my FX6, but you can’t even match the framerate! I‘m shooting 24p mostly and can’t combine that with 23.98 😭
Exactly!!!
I didnt realize it couldnt even do true 24p 😵 thats just ridiculous and no shutter angle? Those two things i cant forgive. I can maybe forgive not shooting raw since its so darn small but 24p and shutter angle are bare minimum
@@baqcasanke What do you mean? I have the camera and 24 fps is absolutely an option
I have no interest in the FX3, I think it is a camera designed by the marketing department of Sony.

Please make video on Todays Firmware Update FX3
I am blown away by the quality of the motion graphics! Outstanding!
Thank you so much Arif. Happy you liked them
FX3 is a complete FAIL!!!
For less than 3 grand
i got it for $1200 new.
I own the FX3 and love it, but I have to agree with all of these points. The one thing I really miss is shutter angle. Thanks for making this video.
Apparently there will be a software update for it this september
This is certainly one of the best video gear channels out there! Keep up the good work, Sherif.
Really appreciate it. Thanks for watching
Totally agree
can't get 4 channels of audio on the a7Siii. Add two XLR's and a Dual Rode Option and boom...Wouldn't necessarily call it a "fail."?
I always enjoy watching your videos. It's rich with content, well made, great flow, and engaging.
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching Yeng.
You put out amazing content bro. Idk how you don’t have more subs.

Their camera list is mainly for movies they produce
the tilting screen mechanics from S1H should of been standard on A7Siii 😪 i miss my S1H
Yeah.. I wonder if they Patented it? Maybe that's why we're not seeing anywhere else
@@THEDPJOURNEY I think I remember seeing an old Sony A-mount camera with an S1H style flip/tilt LCD. So I doubt it's patent issues.
It's a pro-sumer camera like everything else that has the "cinema" marketing spiel behind it. These things are aimed towards videographers, documentarians and to a lesser extent youtube creators. These won't show up on any production with an actual budget.
Agreed. It’s just pretty misleading and not very honest kind of marketing imho
Exactly my point... you discovered it the hard way
@@THEDPJOURNEY The hard way? LOL. It would have taken 5 seconds of Googling to determine the lack of differences.

Can you explain? FX3 does not have time code in. Is there a time code input I’m not aware of you discovered?
I almost bought Fx3 but after watching your review I have to reconsider black magic 6k pro.... thanks bro. that was deeeeep review
God hope that happens in their next update! How do we know it will happen though??

Welcome aboard Eugene! Thanks for the support
Im an FX30 user (so really, the smaller brother to this camera in sensor size) and here are my points of using this camera
1) Agree. But Who knows if that will happen
2) I think its only an FX3 problem but the FX30 I believe (i dont mess with time code too much) DOES come with Time Code
3) Agree on the DCI 4k with shooting at 4096x2160 vs 3840x2160.
As far as monitor placement goes, Small Rig makes this very weird device that actually extends the handle size, gives it finger grooves, and gives you MANY mounting points on the top handle and I can easly use the top handle with my monitor attached
6) the single base plate mount is again fixed with caging the camera, which most are going to do with the camera anyway.
Awesome analysis!! Hopefully Sony can still come through with the EVF suggestion you made.
Yeah... makes more sense to me than a built in Audio module in the handle.
@@THEDPJOURNEY I would gladly give up the audio module for the EVF-all day long!
The tally lights is the biggest for me .. tell me who has forgot to click record button and took the shot
Ha ha ha, yeah happened to us all
fx3 is an attempt to earn more on a good camera which is a7s3 ;) It's just a converted a7s3, nothing else. But it is more expensive (I don't know why?) and cheaper to produce (EVE is more expensive to produce then handle and fan), so the profit for Sony is bigger :)
Yeah true
Really?
Does the a7S III have XLR inputs for professional audio? An active cooling system for reliability? Mounting points and top handle for ergonomics? Do you use a camera crushed in your face for shooting video?
@@FlipDeRiviera "professional audio" = then you need an extra person for audio only ;)
But... for example... a7s3 + Cage + H4Npro.
Good point
If you wanna go cinema camera, then S1H honestly
I just purchased my fx3 and now I'm slightly nervous in a good and bad way lol.

Built in ND
@@cinematicknifeart9744 such small body gotta be tricky to get an ND assembly in it.
@@cinematicknifeart9744 not necessarily all cinema cameras, even bigger ones, have internal NDs
@@theowlfromduolingo7982 Thats what I meant.
I have never been on a narrative big-budget shoot where timecode was a thing. External TC is a holdover from film camera days to ensure the camera was running accurately at the project frame rate. It was also used to sync cameras to tv screens on camera. Broadcast multicamera productions obviously need time code and sync.
I don't think you were paying much attention then on those shoots because TV and Features still use timecode extensively.
I’m a bit disappointed about this camera, no 24fps, DCI 4K, ND and 3D LUT. Panasonic S1H did better about to be a hybrid cinema camera
Very valuable info! Really good to know. Good job👍
Glad it was helpful!
100% agreed, maybe they could also come up with a version without IBIS and with eND instead
That would be awesome
I suspect there will be firmware updates for the 24fps, just like the FX6/9 got. As for the timecode, it's a shame but something I can do without.
I look at the FX3 and the A7Siii as two models of the same car with different features. One isn't necessarily 'better' than the other, but each have features that appeal to different 'drivers.'
And finally, not having built-in NDs is perfectly reasonable for a camera at this price.
I guess I'll stay with my R5 and S1H...I was thinking about switching to Sony's FX3 and A7S III but I'll stick with my 2 oldies but goodies.
The Sony FX3 was meant to be Sony's answer to Blackmagic Pocket cinema camera 6K
Not sure if it was the right answer though

In my opinion..Sony shouldn't have released the S3..maybe it was pressure bc everyone was waiting on a successor to the S2..and they had left over bodies laying around and just said F@k it put the stuff inside our regular body and call it the S3..lol joking ..but really though..Sony could have easily side stepped the conrovesry and liked announced the cancellation of the S line and say sorry for the wait but here is something new... and introduce this new FX "3" line..Yes people would have been like what?!..But they didn't do this and hence causing themselves issues with consumers..it is messed up!..Sony had this ready and waiting probably at the same time the S3 released..and yet they let people buy the S3 of course..then months later..oh wait we have this the FX3.basically the same thing..with a different form factor..and justifiably some people were pissed after they just had bought the S3..But really they shouldn't have released the S3 and just cancelled it..consumers would have accepted the FX3..with no question and could move on and be like ok..in my opinion the FX3 is better body and form factor for concentrating on video..its definitely a good starter for consumers who are gong into the FX line..
marketing stretching too much
I cannot wait for DCI 4K in firmware update on both a7siii and fx3.
I realize that the Sony's autofocus can't be beat but what about the image?
s1h more cinema camera than sony "cinema camera"
Yup... calling it cinema, doesn’t make it cinema
Good video. What I think it’s that the give those feature as an actual cinema camera so the FX6 would have no reason to exist.
The FX3 has just few aspects that make it better than A7S III in terms of material and the fan.
But overall it’s not so an improvement to the mirrorless model.
The A1 sensor is the V2 of this entire FX line, all this refinements would be fixed by then.
Thank you so much for watching. Really happy it helped you understand it better. I like the mustang car analogy 😉
Nice try Sony. Right when you think you have the industry fooled, guys like this make a review that tank your sales. Do better and innovate.
You forgot "built-in ND filters" in "missed opportunities". Most cinema cameras have built-in ND, but not the fx3 :)
well, lots of cinema camera doesn't have built-in ND (like RED). NDs are find mostly in ENG cameras and lots of camcorders. For me, built-in ND is not a "cinema" feature like True 24p, DCI 4K, shutter angle and timecode.
Beside the fact that I totally agree with you, I must say that your graphics and animations are top notch! Keep it up.

Same image as a7siii IMO. Have both. Also, is the pro res raw white balance and iso confirmed?
@@jasonnowwhat5041 My bad. I think it was the a1 that had more magenta skin tones, not the FX3. Atomos writes: Users will benefit from the full flexibility offered by the ProRes RAW format as Atomos ensures that all the camera White Balance and ISO/ Exposure Offset adjustments will be available within Final Cut Pro to the user. So yeah, it's confirmed. But like I said, if you're serious about color, you'd be better off using Resolve.

Great video and 100% agree, although having used both I did prefer the shooting experience on the FX3 and it’s made me difficult to go back to A7S iii. Thank you so much for the kind words. I’m trying to simplify the complex technical things about DP’ing. And I’m glad people find it informative. Even though I suck as an audio guy. I’m honestly used to have audio recordist on set and never cared about how to record it till I started my channel. So thanks for your patience
It's kinda annoying how expensive it is. Well, everything's expensive. But this? Almost 4000 USD? Damn.
Yeah, they’re forcing you to buy the audio module. That should’ve been an optional accessory
@@THEDPJOURNEY The XLR module should be detachable from the handle.. :/
I have not used SONY cinema cameras before, but I think the features that FX3 lacks are a firmware away, like shutter angle, time code and waveform false color etc.
God I hope so
Happy you're back DP Journey! Absolutely love your videos! The FX3 doesn't make any sense at all to me. Even that top handle they made should have had a nice spot for a monitor but it's so awkwardly placed directly on top of the lens. Seems like Sony just got lazy with this one.
I agree 100% Thanks again for watching. I was away for some back to back commercial work. Hard to balance YT and work actually
This was a great break down, love your content man👏, I learn quite a lot, will follow on Instagram 👌
Best cmara plz
Tell me
A7s3
Or
Fx3
Great question
no such thing as best camera... it all depends on what you need it for.... I hope this video will help you find the answer that suits your needs :)
@@THEDPJOURNEY I think the better question is, “I trust your opinion, which camera would you personally rather spend money on?”
The thing is, what works for me might not work for you. that’s why I have this episode to kind of help you find the answer that works for YOU. But to answer your question still, I would buy the FX3 if I didn’t already have the 7S3. But that’s me
You mean the Sigm fp is the progressive company with the built in ports for mounting accessories.
You nailed it. Actually the A7S3 is a great camera which basically offers the same features than the FX3. The only thing that I really miss is the fan for Wildlife filmmaking in hot environments.
yes man! you are a masterpiece. I love my s1h, is the best mirrorless cinema camera!
Thanks David! Appreciate your awesome comment. Yes the S1H is a great camera. I wish it took the AF and 4K 120 from the SONY though
@@THEDPJOURNEY yes, it is not perfect. Good review, like always.
@@THEDPJOURNEY Any rumours of a Mark 2 of the S1H (S2H)?
@@tubeman1983 I think before it will appear the gh6 or similar micro 4/3
@@THEDPJOURNEY what do you think is the best travel filmmaker camera out on the market?
Awesome explanation. It seems that Lumix is still ahead. Thank you so much for sharing.
You bet!
missed opportunity here by sony for sure... anyways thanks for a great breakdown as always!
Thanks for watching!
Hi, Thanks for your videos. I´ve got the FX3 and I am looking for a monitor now. I do want a 7" monitor, so the ninja V is no option. The blackmagic video assist 12 G 7" would be my option. Will I be able to record ProRess Raw in the best possible way?
Yeah the BM is a great option. And no, it doesn’t record ProRes RAW unfortunately. Will never happen.
@@THEDPJOURNEY Thank you for your immediate answer.
Hi!!! Loving your videos, will you please do a review/breakdown of the new BMPCC 6K Pro please?
Working on it already ;)
Thank you for this very candid and clear opinion, and well-made, concise review. I so agree with you, though I am going to buy the Sony fx3 with a heavy heart, especially for the lack of time code (I use it a lot). As a self-shooting director I need some of these features, and am leaving out the A7sIII only because of the cooling fan (I work in super hot areas, and often have long hours of continuous shooting). I was considering BMPCC 6K pro, but because of the many run and gun situations and hand held shooting I do, dropped it in favour of the FX3.
Thanks for the kind words. And yeah… not sure what we’re they thinking taking out TC
if you want the handle, the fx3 is a no brainer (over a a7s3+ k3m) . However, the massive disappointment of no ND. (not mentioned on this video??) I would easily pay an extra 1000 if it came with a built in ND
Built in ND is not a typical Cinema Camera feature though. But I still mentioned in the every beginning at 00:22
@@THEDPJOURNEY true, just surprised that didnt pick on it further. I would take ND over shutter angle and better display everyday
I absolutely agree with you on this video. Calling it a “cinema camera” - does not make it a cinema camera. Very informative video! Tbh I’m waiting for your bmpcc6k pro review... cheers!
That’s coming next
Great observations !!
Cheers thanks
Who does your motion graphics? Need that on my channel!
I do them myself 😉
I just bought the a7siii after your review and save more money for better lenses instead of fx3
Happy I helped you make that choice
I WAS WAITING FOR THIS :)
It's finally here... more to come
I kinda need ND, EVF and shutter angle......
if BMPC had a good autofocus system i would have definitly gone with it
Yeah, we all wish for that. I have a feeling it’s not gonna happen
Hoping for a ZCAM Review. Great vid as always
Nice content. Very informative from a DP point of view.
Happy you liked it
Great video!
