Which of these meals have you tried, and which ones would you like to try?
In this video, we discuss 10 typical Swedish “husmanskost.” These are the most common meals in Sweden that Swede’s like to eat both at home and at the restaurant. So if you’re looking to get the REAL Swedish experience, then this list is a great place to start!
The list:
Köttbullar - the most famous Swedish dish… meatballs!
Wallenbergare - basically a giant meatball made popular by the famous Wallenberg family
Pyttipanna - leftovers chopped up and mixed together
Ärtsoppa och pannkakor - Pea soup and pancakes. This can ONLY be eaten on Thursdays. No exceptions.
Renskavsgryta - reindeer stew
Stektströmming - no, not SURströmming! This is herring cooked in a frying pan.
Toast skagen - toast with a mixture of shrimp, mayo, and spices
Lax med dillstuvad potatis - salmon with dill-stewed potatoes
Västerbottenpaj - this is not a dessert pie. It’s a cheese pie made with Västerbottenost.
Kött med pommes och BEA - meat with french fries and bearnaise sauce
Which of these meals have you tried, and which ones would you like to try?
Pyttipanna, köttbullar med lingonsylt, blödplatt, gravlax, ren,,, 😀♡ Jag äter Svenska mät på Finland.
Well, I’ve tried everything on this list cause…
I am Swedish🇸🇪
And let me correct one thing: we don’t eat pea soup that often anymore. And basically never in school. I’ve only got it once or twice in school, and in my opinion, it’s kinda disgusting. But that could be cause I hate peas lol😅
well, as a half-german growing up in Munich Germany, köttbullar were always my favourite food! My mother always said that I am more swedish than her because of that 🤣
@@AlterSchwede73There is a popular song about a half german swedish boy who keeps putting meatballs in his nose. Search för "köttbullar i näsan". They sing with a pretend german accent.
Now you know 😂
The Swedes' obsession with putting lingon jam and potatoes in about everything is me obsessing over having sesame oil and soy sauce with everything
Haha, I can understand your obsession for sesame oil and soy sauce - it is delicious!
@@FunSwedish My mom calls it an unhealthy pleasure😶 No idea what she's talking about 😌
Lingonberries (or rårörda lingon as it's called, which means stirred raw lingonberries) is the best thing. And it's so easy and much more tasty to make yourself! Just stir raw lingonberries with sugar until the juices and the sugar mix together and let it sit for a few hours. Delicious!
I’ve been to Sweden twice and tried köttbullar, gravadlax and herring. And we brought home some älg products such as pâté and sausage. Our cat tasted it first, lol. Everything was delicious and surprisingly affordable.
Hehe, love your reasoning: 'If it's good enough for the cat it's good enough for me!'
I'm the granddaughter of 2 Swedish grandfathers living in Canada and I've had Swedish Meatballs and lingonberry sauce etc and the peas soup meal...I LOVE your videos!!!
Tack! Hope you enjoyed the lingoberry with the meatballs 😊
I never get tired of plain boiled potatoes!! I can eat them at every meal.
Definitely all of them excerpt for Lamb... (Which I don' t like at all)!!!!!!!
You forgot the best Swedish Dish,Ann Margaret!😍
Very helpful video. I was wondering what else Swedes are eating than what is served in IKEA. I am making a Swedish Christmas this year. I am living in the UK and I was born in The Netherlands and just don't like the traditional English Christmas Dinner. So I was looking to Sweden. I think my kids and myself will enjoy it.❤💕
Glad it was helpful!
Fortunately I love potatis och lingon. ♥️
Then you will like Sweden a lot!
I would love to visit Sweden and try Swedish food even though the dishes look plain! I love your royal family!
Don't there NOTHING there to eat and without flavor 🤮
I guess they are sort of plain compared to food from warmer countries, but some of them are truly delicious. Granted, I'm swedish. :)
I didn't know many interestings information about swedish meals. Thank you. 👍🏆
You gave a lot of information. Thanks. A great video thanks. Very nicely explained.
I love Stockholm …..please…..I do want to learn sweedish…….I have been in Stockholm many times……to me it is the best city in the World.
Oh! I am glad you think so :) As a Stockholmer myself I get extra proud of hearing this even though there are SO many other beautiful cities in the world.
Swedish food is quite sweet without all the additives.
Tack så mycket! Vad fint!
Tack!
In my Swedish holidays I ate köttbullar, lax, sill, ren...and even älg! Of course, lyngon and potatis everywhere!!
In my next trip in Sverige, I must trie all the rest of these food :-)
Amazing! You have already tried so much!
Cubing meat and potatoes, pan fried, we usually call "hash". Often includes onion.
So good
i had toast skagen in Lund and it was so so so delicious :)) can't wait to travel there again
Have tried everything on that list thanks to dagenslunch! I find that there's always some sort of sauce and definitely potatoes! Great video!
Haha, I agree with you :)
Du glömde flygande jakob!
😱😱
Jo du den är speciell
@@ThePapaja1996 och god
I love your channel
😍
Tack sa mycket :)
😊
Det heter bearnaisesås. Inte "bea". Det är så sjukt när folk använder den fula förkortningen av ordet.
I've never tried these berries, must give them a go.
I won a little literature competition with a poem about potatoes, but in my country the tomatoes are more popular... that was weird
Oh! That most have been an amazing potato poem. What country are you from?
@@FunSwedish I'm from Spain
Lax med dillstuvad potatis! - that was my crush food when I visited Sweden first time 😋
So good!
I am American but my parents were both Swedish as well as all my relatives and a month wouldn't go by without kroppkaka or during XMass kula korv being served. Have you heard off these Swedish meals ? I make my own Kuttbullar from my mother's recipe and they are damm good. Especially with the gravy.
Those are definetly well known Swedish meals 😊. In the example of Kroppkaka... I am going to dare say it is dying out 🙈.
Not that people won't eat it anymore for any particular reason... but it is just not as popular as it once was. So it is not eaten that ofter anymore. Or not that widespread.
But of course, every family has it's own traditions. You can leave grandma's favourite out of the Xmas table 😁.
@@FunSwedish It's not dying out at all, ppl eat it all the time. Vetefan vart du fick det ifrån. Kolla bara hela norrland o halva skåne. för o inte tala om alla i sthlm som äter det.
if both ur parents were from sweden then ur swedish too my friend, american is just ur birth nationality and doesn’t really exist ethnically
Lovely it
Hej hej, Jag är Frensk och lära Svenska att resa dit. Thank you very much for your videos, they are awesome ! Merci beaucoup !
Merci beaucoup for your comment!
nice vid
Tack!
I want to try the Reindeer stew. I'll bet it's yummy.
😂😂😂 poor Rudolph! That's hilarious!
Yeah, I agree. Poor Rudolph!
Good
Love from India mam
:)
When they have too much month at the end of the money... One more reason to love swedish people 😂
I've eaten all. I was born in Nacka. Now living Canada.
I love swedes and their food
Happy to hear!
3:30 Särskrivning REEEEEEEEEE. *Wallenberg-familjen / Wallenbergfamiljen.
Vad sägs om kräftor? I augusti?
Mmmmm the Food looks delicious true my dear
Maybe that’s why my Swedish ancestors moved to Idaho, they wanted their taters. LoL
😂😂
Would love to try some of these dishes especially on Thursday. Wonder why sushi is so popular in Sweden as it is not local? Nice video tack FS
I'm not sure why, maybe because we are such a small country, but we are very much outward facing in many ways. We consume a lot of foreign media and not least of all food. Many of the most popular swedish dishes are inspired by, or are, foreign dishes. Sushi, thai, mediterranean and middleeastern are all very popular in Sweden. And let's not forget the "mexican" food, takos/tacos.
But many of the dishes presented in this video are also very popular, tasty, and acutally swedish.
@ersia87 Thanks for reply😊
I don't eat much even here at home (very picky eater). It looks like I'll be living at Max Burgers and Subway if I ever do move there. I'm heading over in February for my third visit in 10 months. It's good that I'm now learning the language!
"too much month left at the end of the money" had me 💀
På östkusten - stekt strömming. På västkusten - stekt sill. I mittersta Småland säger vi bägge alternativen.
You were just reacted to by McJibbin, that's how I found you! 👍 Subscribed
Loved his reaction video! Thanks for subbing!
Kalops kokt potatis och lingonsylt
dillkött är gott
Absolut Svenskt. Även kalops med rödbetor
When I visited my niece in Stockholm, we had reindeer pizza. I enjoyed it for the first slice, but it was too rich for me. I don't eat a lot of meat, so I think it was too much. I can't eat beef, but I hear IKEA has veggie meatballs. My Swedish grandmother used to make kötbullar when I was a kid (she died in 1975, so I only have the memory of the meatballs). I can't wait to get back to Sweden and try some more food... EAT ALL THE POTATIS!!!!
Oh, and thank you for the videos... I really like your teaching style!!
Oh wow! I think you ate something very exotic here, reindeer pizza. I have actually never tried it myself (just heard about it) but totally understand what you mean about the taste.
Hope you can come back soon to try more food and all the potatis! haha
PS. Thanks for all your comments and positivity!
Swedish pizza is different
what about krupkakor or krupkaka?
Actually all of them
Sometimes German and Swedish are really close... "husmanskost" means "Hausmannskost" in German ;)
There is a lot of similarities! Specially because Swedish went through a phase of "loaning" german words 😊
10:01
Is it terragon or tarragon
Which type of potatoes does swedish eat new potatoes or old potato
That is a great question. I have now idea to be honest. I didn't even know it was a thing with new vs old potatoes. I hope someone else can can answer this question? :) Sorry!
@@FunSwedish ❤️
Mest under julen.
Haaaa!!! I don't eat pork and am allergic to potato 😋😋 I'll be on the Ost then! 👌🤣🤣
This is only for the typical food. But Sweden has a lot more variation than just these 😊.
Den strålande videon har du gjort! Tusen tack! Du har väl glömt bort den 11:e husmanskosten, kebab. :)
12:e Korv?
Haha, du har rätt! Kebabpizzan är super svenskt! Tack för komplimangen. Kul att du gillade videon!
Take
🌺🌺
Yuck! Meat balls with ketchup!? No way! I make my own meat balls, though not very often. They are a must on the Christmas table, though.
Toast Skagen is really more fancy food than "husmanskost". I would say that the same goes for Västerbottenspaj. Falukorv (not served in my house) is missing from the list, meatloaf too.
Meatballs with pasta = ketchup
Meatballs with potatoes = lingonberry and/or brownsauce
What a hell for Vegetarians, even the Quiche was probably made with rennet cheese
Husmanskost is definetly not vegetarian friendly. But Sweden has embraced many other kinds of food nowadays.
And there are always plenty of vegetarian and even vegan alternatives everywhere you go!
kroppkakor and saffron pancakes is only food i know of that are vegetarian.
An that is not allways the case either.
I would say that a bit simpler husmanskost is very friendly with vegetarians. In older times all farmers rather sell their pigs, geese, calves and steers for cash. Current husmanskost looks like feast which old swedes ate one time in year, not like daily basis. They ate a lot of surkål, rödbetor, kålrot etc, hard bread, some greens from garden from backend of their house, honey instead of sugar and eggs instead of meat. But everything edible is always good, I'm not Picky. I eat everything and it's possible to see it on me,,what a pity.
I think there are vegan eateries in Sweden.
Wow..even sweden cannot run away from potatoes...
I ate all of them as a swede except the västerbotten paj.
You totally forgot plankstek. What is more swedish than that?
Nummer fem tack!
😊
Very Meat and Potatoes..My kind of thing.
Is it true that Swedes eat tacos on Fridays?
It is very true! Part of fredagsmys.
(Not EVERYONE of course... but A LOT)
Razin ninja 🇲🇾 🇸🇪
Where is the steaks? Porter-steak etc...
My Swedish boyfriend told my friends he ate Rudolph. They were not happy
😂😅 we can imagine!
But it's so good
If you get to a Swedish home you won't get food 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
😂😅
That depends on when you come, and how long you will stay. But you will always become coffee and cakes, "Fika".
I don't eat meats. Limited choices there for other dishes.
In Husmanskost there if for sure very limited choices. But Sweden has embraced a lot of new food cultures and there are often lots of vegetarian and vegan alternatives everywhere you go!
Excellent...Thank you!
In the States they eat lots of meat. Large burgers
@@erikandersson6145 Look beyond generalisations. In a highly diverse country of 300+ million, you'll find plenty of people in the US who only eat veggie burgers or no burgers at all! 💚
Swedes dont eat rice at all?
Seems Swedish eat a lot less fish than the Danes
Erik XIV lär aldrig ha kommit till pannkakorna. Och om han gjort det så hade det antagligen varit pangkakor.
Makes me wonder what you all were eating before potatoes were brought over from the Americas, if potatoes and peas are all you can grow. Was it turnips? Could that be why the Brits call them 'swedes'?
Yes, you are correct👍. Before we ate potatoes it was common with turnips in Sweden.
Fun Swedish you was saying that we eat pancakes and ärtsoppa every thursday it is not true and we can eat international food in school. We can eat food from all around the globe in our Schools 🇸🇪❤️🇸🇪 even on thursdays it can be it but not every today in 2023 it is no longer true.
I live here in Sweden and is true booth we don’t eat international ore the thursday thing!
💚🤍💙💙💛
Wtf is "ettchoppa"?
Lingon... Yuck! I'm as Swedish as can be, but I hate it. I don't even eat it with blodpudding - I eat that with strawberry jam or nothing at all instead. Sometimes I feel like the only Swede who dislikes lingonberry jam though. :) Sometimes I also wonder what on Earth everyone sees in it.
Have eaten everything on this list - without lingonberries, of course. :P
Swedish eat Rudolf 😞😱🤭🤭
Don't listen to everything she says. Not everything is true.😆
Meatball came from turks during ottaman empire. It is definitely not swedish.
Maybe thats true theres is also probely people that did it even before that
If you don't like lingonberries that's fine but if you replace it with KETCHUP????... That just means you are pure evil and must be purged
I had way too much fun watching this jeez
I read that Finns eat a dish made out of reindeer near the holidays. It has a long name though. I remember that. Maybe best not to tell the kids.
Swedes dont eat rice at all?
Yes, we do it rice. A lot but it is not included so much in the traditional Swedish food.
