"This is your pilot, Juan Browne. Welcome aboard Mighty Luscombe Airlines! We have a short flight today departing Nevada County Airport and arriving at Nevada County Airport in about an hour. We should have a pretty uneventful flight today: we will be simulating an engine failure on takeoff, perform a couple of stalls, and land repeatedly at our destination before finally deplaning. So sit back and relax while I work on my requalification during the flight. We know you have many air carrier options at Nevada County Airport so thanks for choosing MLA!"
Loved taking a ride with you and the Mighty Luscombe this morning ! Even more so we all loved seeing you in the air once again where you belong !Congratulations !!
“ undercarriage down and welded”. I thought I was the only one who talks to myself on the intercom. Really wonderful to see you in the air again. Thanks for sharing the moment.
First time I heard that expression I was PAX on a UH1-N coming into Ramstein AB - typical rainy day in the Rheinland and RAPCON was talkin' us in... When we got to the point where she reminded: "Spar Seven Zero, by this time your landing gear should be down and locked," one pilot looked at the other and said; "Yeah, down and welded..." - waw -
It's a good idea to always do the "from memory " checks out loud. It helps to focus on actually performing the checks, means you are less likely to accidentally skip an item, and also ensures that when you go for a check ride the instructor/examiner knows you actually did the checks instead of accidentally doing them all in your head and him/her thinking you didn't do them.
@@TheAverageDutchman I did similar in my driving test. I failed the first time, because of "undue hesitation" (those bastards marked me down for being cautious, on a blind junction, over a humped-back bridge, after almost being wiped out by a madman coming the other way), touching the kerb on the reversing around the corner (my confidence had gone & I was panicky), and most annoyingly, "not using my mirrors", which was BS, but I had them set up perfectly, so I could glance with my eyeballs, rather than exaggerated head movements. I was salty about that when my 2nd test came around, so I told the tester that I was unfairly judged to have not used my mirrors in the previous test, because I had adjusted them perfectly & precicely, and to prevent further injustice, I would be announcing the word "MIRROR", whenever I used the mirrors - it was hilarious!
You didn't just get your medical back, you got happiness! Love your luscombe videos more than anything! Happy for you Juan, I appreciate what you have done for the aviation community, a true American!
Beautiful! My Dad (RIP) learned to fly in a Luscombe just like yours (at Bill Gibbs in San Diego… earned flight time by washing airplanes and whatever else Bill asked him to do)! It all led to him getting his Pilots License at 14 and his stint with SAC, and the National Air Guard after his initial commitment. It also led him to buy a Cessna 206 later in life that proved to be much joy for all of us. I would love to get my hands on a Luscombe one day. Great to see you’re back up where you belong!
Wonderful to see you flying again and the big grin on your face at the end. You really do love flying. I appreciated the full length landing video and the running comments.
Glad to see you flying as PIC solo! Missed seeing you fly the Mighty Luscombe! By the way you were one of the reasons about 3 years ago when I discovered your channel that I got hooked back on to my childhood dream of becoming a pilot. I’m 16 hours into my PPL training and soon going to be soloing! Stay safe Juan!
My heart soared with you! It's been over thirty years since I've flown but this was a wonderful flashback....until you I never knew flying could be a vicarious experience. Thank you for sharing! Journey mercies.
The sheer joy of seeing you back in the Luscombe. I was grinning ear to ear through the whole video. I'm so glad you're coming through the prostate mess, I started out last year with that, and the biopsy came back clean. That was good until the biopsy on my leg turned out to be a sarcoma. Three weeks at Stanford, three at VA nursing facility ih Reno. and a total of six surgeries this year and six weeks of radiation. All due to agent orange. It's beautiful to see you overcome the trials that have been put before you this past year, and your attitude has been really inspirational. Hope to see you flying the triple seven soon.
Congrats on getting back to flying, Juan. Also, glad to hear you have recovered with your health concern. Thanks for all that you do for the UA-cam community. All the best!
I enjoy watching you fly the Luscombe. Brings back a lot of memories. My dad soloed in 1937, sold farm animal feed and flew a Cub into farmer’s fields around NY and New England to service their cows as a vet. Then he graduated into 150s and 172s. Finally he got a 2 window 1948 Bonanza, which ended the grass fields. He was always a VFR pilot. He and I flew to a lot of places. Enjoy your return to flying.
Love the intro...the mighty Luscombe back where it belongs...in the air, great to see both of you back up and soaring the skies once again...congrats Juan. Cheers from Aus!!!!
Hey Juan, nice to see you flying the Mighty Luscombe again. My dad had one when I was a kid back in the 60's. He started teaching me the basics of flying in good ol' 2272K. Unfortunately that airframe doesn't exist anymore. I think it was damaged beyond repair in a ground loop accident after my dad sold it. I sure enjoyed the sights and sounds from your cockpit cam. Your landings were awesome! Glad you're going to be flying the big iron again. Take care and fly safe.
Your return to solo flight was a reminder of the utter joy I felt returning to flying after a 9 month grounding due to cataract surgery. How blessed we are to experience what those in past history could only dream of.
Juan I am so friggin happy for you! You've had a tough fight and came out a winner. The smile on your face at the end of this video told me everything! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE more video in the Mighty Luscombe!!!!!!!!
The Mighty Luscombe! I have a few hours, flown in 1952. I love their looks. I bounced a couple times b4 good landings. Great to see you flying again, Juan.
Gotta love flying light aircraft. While on an "Air Experience Flight", with the UK ATC (Air Training Corps), in the late 80's, my very first AEF was in an RAF Chipmunk & it featured a pretty awesome aerobatic session, including loop-the-loops, barrel-rolls, a stall-turn (which was bloody awesome) & basically whatever the pilot felt like doing (except inverted, as the RAF's Chipmunk fuel system didn't support extended inversion).
I'm sure it felt great to be back in the Mighty Luscombe solo, big congrats Juan! Enjoy!! Thanks for sharing this flight with us, we've all been waiting for it!! There's a happy face!!
Great to see you out in the Mighty Luscombe. What I particularly liked, unlike many pilots on UA-cam flying single engine aircraft, you did not have to add power on the first landing. Rather you knew you were high and side-slipped to perfection. A real pleasure to watch.
Started watching this channel back when you were providing excellent updates on Oroville dam. If I could like this video a thousand times, I would. Really happy you are back in the seat. One positive out of 2020!
Great stuff, JB. I especially appreciate the commentary as you are doing things during the flight. It lets a wannabe pilot get a better idea of your thought processes as you haul the Mighty Luscombe around the patch.
At 2:50, you said "It's like putting on a well-worn pair of shoes" and you'd only been out for less than 2 years. A few years ago, I had the opportunity to fly the same Aeronca Champ that I had from 1970 to 1974 and it was that exact same feeling. Other than the door threshold being a lot higher than it was 40 years earlier, it felt like I'd only been away a week. Turns still came out on heading and on altitude and big slips were just as fun. Some things you just don't forget.
Great to see you flying again !!! Please, Don't quit playing that upright bass to that great bluegrass music now that your wings are back. We share those two things in common.
Wow, you are an excellent pilot! That was so smooth, you made it look easy (but I know it's not as easy as it looks). It's great to see you back in the pilot seat again.
