This is what the aviation industry needs , for people to see, it’s not just how quick you can get there , it’s about the journey, thanks for sharing your beautiful memories!!
I hope Pete can access these videos when he’s Juan’s age and appreciate the life he had as a kid. I had a great childhood also, but only have a few old black and white photos to remember it by. What a lucky pair you are!
@@osakarose5612 me too but I'm not letting my father to ruin the rest of my life. Just let it go and make what time you have left on earth a happy one. Took me years to learn that. Much happier and healthier now. Peace be with you always!
I have spent countless hours riding all the roads in the Mendocino National forest on my Africa Twin. It was sad to see it all go up in flame these recent years. I've camped many times by that lake and it is always fun seeing people fly in. Another great video Juan. Glad you both could enjoy some airplane camping out under the stars.
I’ve been watching your channel since the Oroville spillway incident. Your coverage from start to finish was by far the best hands down. I have to say this segment is some of the best content you have produced since then. Great job Juan and co-pilot Pete.
Being a pilot is not only the best job but it’s the most rewarding job because you can teach your son or daughter to fly and the feeling of your son looking up to you as a hero is just beyond spectacular
This is, by far, my most favorite of all your videos so far! These truly are the best of times.... Both of you will remember adventures like this forever.
The first 2 minutes brought back SO Many memories of flying with my Grandfather when I was Pete's age in the 1980s. Thank you for the happy tears. Pete is a lucky kid!
Man, I just love this. Pete is a great kid, and watching you two together just brings a smile to my face. I have great memories of flying with my dad, although we started together when I was a teenager.
These videos with you and Pete enjoying Husky time are just pure gold. Seeing unique sights, learning loads, making memories, very special memories. We viewers are just very privileged to be along for the ride. DJ in the U.K.
My dad was just like Juan. He taught me how to launch our boat, drive the boat and even pull the trailer out of the water and up the boat ramp to the lot while he drove the boat around to our slip at the resort...all before I was 10. He taught me everything. This is so touching to see, and makes me think of my dad. Thank you Juan.
I have been "through" Gravelly Valley many times, mostly driving a milk truck delivering to the resorts on Lake Pillsbury in the late 70's. I remember the stop sign and "low flying aircraft" sign, since the (gravel) road bisected the airstrip. My dad flew in a few times, but I never got the opportunity. At least one time he made a milk delivery using a rented Cessna or Piper in the early 70's, dropping off a few cases of something that was short the day before. Just called the resort owner to let him know about what time he would be there. Took off from Ukiah and made the 20 minute flight, made a low pass over the resort to let the owner know to go down to the airstrip to head over and pick it up. It sure beat the hour or so drive over very rutted, gravel logging roads. This brings back a lot of memories. Thanks, Juan! Pete, you don't know how lucky you are yet, but someday you will!
Beautiful! Reminds me of flying in 1969 with my dad, 1946 Ercoupe. An engineer, he drilled me through the flight. Learned a lot. Loved every minute. Enjoy those times with Pete, Juan!
Brings back memories of flying into Gravelly Valley several times, not camping but just day trips with friends. Mooney, 210, Bonanza. No problem with that one-way-in opposite-way-out strip, as long as you keep it rolling so you don't need a blast of power on the gravel.
Precious father & son adventure! Thanks for sharing - still smiling... Pete has all the right instincts to be a great & safe aviator. All credit to his dad🤗
Pete is one lucky kid and will soon be a fine man, he has a great head start in aviation, and a father who spends time with him. You sir seem to be a great father and role model for him!
What an unforgettable memory for Pete!! A real father son adventure!! You only get these opportunities once in a life time. You can't go back and re-do your childhood once you have grown up, but you will always have those wonderful memories that you both can share over and over again!!!
That is so cool, Ol'man hanging out w th his kid, doing fun stuff. Love it. Reminds me of my Dad, doing stuff like that with me. Treasure every minute, I miss him so much.
Juan, I hope you are grateful for how lucky you are. You probably are living proof of the saying, "the harder you work, the luckier you get" Peace and Love, j
Great video, Juan. Velcro the Stratus and wipe the condensation off the top of the wing next time. You are the best for feeling like we are all flying with you and Pete. He is a lucky guy to have a dad like you. Having lived in Grae Eagle for many years while with Pan Am, it brings back some beautiful memories along the Feather River motorcycling and Polarising. Keep on dadding.
I suspect you had these adventures with Pete in mind when you got the Husky. Building his character, knowledge and experience for the future -- and having an absolute blast in the process!! An outstanding plan, Sir. Thanks for letting us tag along with you aviators! As I recall Pete was reciting "Aviate - Navigate - Communicate" - probably before learning multiplication tables. I'm thinking he'll be an outstanding pilot!
It's a small world. My daughter Amy was the campground host at Navy Camp (Gravelly Valley Airstrip) from 2014-2019. We flew commercial from NC to visit her for a week in 2018. It was a little too far for a quick trip in my Cherokee 150. The runway was in about the same condition then. We saw a much larger herd of elk though. Probably 150 elk came to the airstrip and lake each afternoon. It is a beautiful place. Thanks for refreshing my memories.
Great video, Juan! As a native of Ukiah (UKI), I've flown a Cessna 150 (N22585) up to Gravely Valley several times. Wow! Lake Pillsbury is sure low! California needs water!!!!! Awesome time with your son. Thanks again!
Juan, you've got to be one proud papa. Don't know how old Pete is, but I'm betting he's flying before he's driving. You are making memories with him that he will remember forever. Very impressive young man.
Your going to hear about some of the pictures in a few years LOL. So great to see Pete happy back in the plane after. I'm 69 and max out at an hour between relief stops !!. Those trips are going to be priceless memories. My trips with the kids are mine All the best, stay safe.
Your trips with Pedro have become my favorite videos. My 5 yr old son is balking at camping (we’ve done some test runs sleeping in a tent in the backyard) and I used this video as motivation
Lake Pillsbury was a fabulous place to camp. We have camped there many many times. It was once a hot bed for people with hang gliders to fly and camp down at Oak flat camp ground. That whole area has changed a lot over the last 10 plus years with multiple wild fires with the first big burn happening in 1995, the Mendenhall complex. Great place to ride dirt bikes and quads. Many people fly in to camp and the hang gliding has mostly stopped because of the USFS rules and bureaucratic non sense! It was one of my favorite places to camp and now it is the last place I want to camp. Hope you and Pete had a good time. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Pete is going to have SOOO many good memories of being with you flying, I had a much older father, that did nothing with me, he is so lucky your involved with his growing up.
That's the way to do it, showing Pete the ropes & teaching him about nature at the same time Juan. Couldn't agree more on those dumba...ses tearing up the runway, frustrating as hell.
This takes me back 60+ years. Weekends with my dad. We didn't do the camping, but we made many Saturday and Sunday pancake fly is to local airports in Nebraska. First trips were in his Taylorcraft then later in his version of the Mighty Luscombe Silvaire. So much fun and I remember doing the roller coaster too!
Hey Juan! What a father! I also used to take my son up to cruise with me ! Unforgettable times for Good Old Pete to treasure for ever! Well done ! I just hope to see more GA Pilots doing this and expending quality time together!
The one thing I do miss about flying is airplane camping. My wife and I spent many summers flying eastern Washington/Idaho flying and camping the back country
Enjoyable vid Juan...Excellent to have your Pete along on for the fun trip....I probably saw you on the approach to NC...we're down on Greenhorn Rd...haha, never heard of a sphincter altimeter.
I was older than Pete, I was about 15. My dad was left seat, me flying from right seat. We would start from Petaluma, land every airport going to Ukiah and back in a Commanche 250. I was a student pilot. Loved the right seat for practice and radio work.
Great video! Reminds me of when my dad was first teaching me about airplanes when I was a kid back in the 60's and I still remember him letting me take the controls of his Cherokee 180. Now I'm much older and several years retired from my own aviation career, but I now get to teach my grand kids about flying in my Bonanza.
I'm not so old I can't remember being that young feller in the back seat, flying in and outta the strip on Savary Island BC in a 150. I went on to navigate my way around much of the SW BC coastline, a couple times in a DHC-2 float-plane, of course when the wings were supplied only for the price of gas. I sure miss it... Thanks for bringing back such happy memories long since stowed.
Forgot to mention- 2 gallons of water, 2 first aid kits (kids often get banged up playing outdoors), Inreach Delorme tracker with progress sent to Jeni's PC back home.
Hey Juan, is that a backup AHRS system sitting on your dash? If so, what model is that? I am in the market.
Found it I think, looks like a Stratus 3

I like how you included Pete in your talk. He'll pick up all the nuances of flying almost by osmosis. Well done Juan !
To this day I will never forget my time with my Pop cutting wood, farming and just hanging out.
Glad to see this. Pete is very fortunate.
Hearing Pete call "Trim, trim, trim" made me laugh out loud.
