I am a novice; I just bought my first DSLR camera. It seemed complicated, but after watching these videos I am beginning to understand. You simply give the information without going overboard on the tech jargon, and your presentations are well organized with the perfect amount of info. I can only comprehend so much at once. I have already learned so much, thank you.
I can't express how great these tips are! I learned so much about my camera and tips I know I can use daily. You explain and demonstrated so well too. Thank you!
DUDE! I have seen a lot of online teaching, and each one has their style. I cannot express how much I appreciate yours. Direct, to the point, and easy. Thank you!
The best photography tutor I know, never cease to surprise me and I always, always learn something from you, Phil. Please keep the tutorials coming, will always support you!
One of the best videos i have seen. The panning technique to find focus and the auto to manual focus technique a must know for these digital cameras. Thank you for your time.
I'm ecstatic!!! I jumped up and down in pure joy after finding out about the focus points on my canon! I never knew that feature existed and this will truly be a game changer!
Thank you. I used the center focus point on my older slrs, but switched to multi-point with my new dslr. I'm going back to center point and will remember you tips for camera focus. Thanks, again.
Love the tip about using auto focus initially on a spot you know the subject will occupy, then switching to manual focus so you can concentrate on composition when the subject arrives. Thanks!
I like your videos a lot more than most people on youtube, because you don't edit the damn thing every 2 seconds. You actually know what you're talking about and have full confidence at it makes for a much more reliable source to get information and tips from. I cannot stand people that make a 10 minute video, and they literally edit it after saying 4 to 5 words. It does my head in and just sounds annoying. your videos just flow so much better. Cheers.
I watched this video last September, and its helped the sharpness of my images immeasurably! My biggest problem was always getting night time landscape shots focused properly, and the live view technique at the end was a revelation! Thank you!
Brilliant, that focus and recompose is an awesome tip, I had never realised you could do that. Great videos and thanks for your time spent preparing them. John - NZ
Some really great tips, especially Auto to Manual for sports and different autofocus edge techniques. Loved the optical zoom in live view with manual setting. I did wonder about the latter so thanks for the confirmation. Excellent work!
Focus and recompose I shoot most often at f/4.0. At f/2.8 I get some soft shots but all depends on the cameras as well. Newer DLSRs have vastly improved focusing.
How can express my feelings? A lot of thanks is not enough. This is undoubtedly the best ever post on DSLR focus I have come across. Plz keep it up. Expecting a lot more such tutorials to come from you in near future. Thank you again for such wonderful post.
Excellent.. As a novice I was glad to hear about difficulties with focus. I have moved to a beautiful part of Victoria in the Yarra Ranges with prolific bird life. However as I walk along the Lilydale to Warrandyte trail not only can I have light extremes, shade to sun but the birds don't exactly strike a pose so as they flit in and out and around, I am trying to hang in there on manual figuring out how to settle into a combination of shutter speed etc that works. And yes, I have times when my camera is desperate to focus as a bird is playing hide and seek in a bush. Have I mentioned the Eastern Rosellas that will then dart across in front of you when you least expect it?
Great video Phil, I've purchased two of your online courses in the past week. "How to Shoot Professional-Looking Portraits on a Budget With Small Flashes" and "Lightroom Made Easy" so these UA-cam videos are a great supplement to those courses. I love reading but the instructional videos are so much better than reading a book or instruction manual. Nice work!
1978 bought it new with my grass-cutting money. Cost about $400 back then! My gods were Geddy Lee and Chris Squire, so I had to have the Rick. Now it's an art object more than a musical instrument in my life.
This is excellent. Best I've heard it explain and loved that you showed it through your camera's viewfinder to help better see it and understand it. Thank you so much!
Excellent video. So far I didn't use the central focus point a lot, had no idea it was the most sensitive. I will lock focus and recompose more often from now on.
awesome information Phil. I thought a new how to use "focus and recompose" but now i understand more about how it works and why it doesn't always work!
Thank you very much informative video. This is the first one which has explained the difference between the focus & recompose method and focus using the multi selector method.
Fantastic video. This is why I laugh when people talk about having 50-100 focus points. I always (9 out of 10 times) use the center and recompose. I really like your videos, you're always on the subject, clear and you never lose focus of what you're talking about.
I've been into photography for a number of years and not many video tutorials WOW me anymore. But your very well-presented video have done just that. Wow. I've learned some very, very helpful tips for improving my photography. Thank you!
Fantastic tutorial. You are in my mind a top class tutor. You seem to find the way of making people understand complicated issues much easier. Great quality video, the best i've seen on a tutorial. Well done Phil. Dave Croft 30 years a pro. photographer.
Thank you Mr.Phil, you are my teacher now. And you can expect an obedient student in your class room. I love your class, not at all boring very good presentation all the time, i love yoour slang and the way you are using your language. All are plus points. Thank you very much.
Super useful and practical tips... Thank you!!! You are making a better photographer out of me every time I watch your videos... Best wishes from another UA-camr!!!
Also you can turn off the feature, and use the rear focus button exclusively. That way you wont mess up your pre-set focus when you are ready to take the shot.
Your the best , great education on focus. I'm learning . If I lived in your location I would willingly pay for lessons. Very clever tutorial . Thanks .
Excellent! Your tutorials make it much easier for a beginner like me to understand how to take better pictures. I just bought a Cannon T4i and I'd like to know more about how to use it to it's maximum effectiveness.
You just solved one of my most vexing focus problems. Shooting birds that are moving around in a tree, there is no time for focusing, and auto focus is useless as it wants to focus on branches feet out of plane. If I find a plane of focus I expect to see the bird enter, I can use your focus, press shutter half way, then turn off the autofocus method.

I've been O.D.-ing on digital photography tutorials lately, and this one, by far, is the best! Thank you so much.
Thank you! I clicked on one video and now here I am 3 hrs later, learning so much! thank you for taking the time to make all these videos!
DUDE! I have seen a lot of online teaching, and each one has their style. I cannot express how much I appreciate yours. Direct, to the point, and easy. Thank you!
Man that was one of the most comprehensive guideline on DSLR focusing...Keep up the great work mate....
Coming from another photographer, this guy is rock solid. Great work Mr Steele.
The manual focus advice is the best thing ever heard.Great tip
The best photography tutor I know, never cease to surprise me and I always, always learn something from you, Phil. Please keep the tutorials coming, will always support you!
Wow! I love the idea of using the "auto focus" to set your lens and then switching to manual. Thanks for the great tips!

Wow, a great collection of details about focusing - even in 2020. Haven't seen a lot of these tips anywhere else.

You have a great gift for teaching in an easily understood manner and it's obvious you know the subject. Thank you for an excellent tutorial.
absolutely Loved this video.. Helps me leaps and bounds. The more I watch it, the easier it is to understand what you are explaining. Thanks!!
Thanks Waxy!
8 years later this is still invaluable info.
Thanks for getting to the point and cover so much in short time. I hate it when people talking and not getting to the point. Thanks again
It's 2021 and this is still really useful!! Thank you so much!!
That part about pre-autofocus then lock by going in manual is so awesome, 9 years after.
Thanks Sebastien, glad you found it helpful!
that camera on corner of table was making my palms sweat.
Buck Weet my knees were weak
Is there vomit on your sweater already, mom's spaghetti?
He probably has insurance?
As a beginner it was so helpful for me thanx a lot..
Thank you. I used the center focus point on my older slrs, but switched to multi-point with my new dslr. I'm going back to center point and will remember you tips for camera focus. Thanks, again.

Great photographic knowledge but a great teacher to boot. Have taken two of his tutorials and they are worth the money.
Brilliant, that focus and recompose is an awesome tip, I had never realised you could do that. Great videos and thanks for your time spent preparing them. John - NZ

Well this video explains what those red dots are for on my Canon EOS 50d. Great video now I'm subscribing!❤❤❤
Phil, great tips in such a short video. I tried something this morning on the manual pre sets on my cats and it works magic.
So refreshing to see a teacher who is not trying to be cute. He is straightforward and great to watch and listen to.
Thank you. Very helpful and instructive. Teaching is something not everyone can do, but really have the gift. Thanks a lot!

Found it VERY helpful - I use manual focus nearly all the time now but still learnt more from this video - thanks again.
I found this extremely helpful. Thank you for being so clear and concise.
Mid 70's Fireglo, very nice. I have a 77 Fireglo with Bartolini pups, absolute classic mate.
Andrew Jackson I was so focused on that Ric ... he he. A real keeper. 👍

Short and efficient tutorial - I loved it. Great work
Great tutorial.. The last tip is the one I've been searching for, for a long time..
You are a great communicator with great photographic knowledge.
The last tip JUST ROCKS!
Willing to buy your flash photography course!
best tutorial, easy to understand specially for beginners. great job!
This is EXCELLENT!!!! I really loved all your tips... usually I use lock-recompose, but as you said, it doesn't work 100% of the time....
wonderful tips! Liked your tip on focus & recompose by moving parallel when focused at wide aperture..
Great video with good tips, man. And I love that bass guitar!
One of the best explanations of this skill set I've heard. Keep up the great work!
