I like how Mondale got absolutely roasted by Reagan and still laughed at the joke. Politicians, even if their views didn’t line up with yours, had class and common decency. They certainly don’t now.
Great moment. Even Mondale loved that response. Ronald Reagan was just waiting for that question. I'm sure he would have been disappointed if he hadn't got it with a response planned like that! I wonder if Ronald Reagan came up with that line himself or someone told him that one. It was a great response and had a perfect delivery. You could tell the questionnaire (and maybe even Walter Mondale) wanted to say "that was a great response" (they would have been thinking that) but they couldn't lol
That age zinger alone solidified Reagan's second term. Notice the 5 second pause after Reagan's remark. Mondale had an opportunity to make a comeback. He made a terrible mistake for not doing so.
The ability to tell a joke with such perfect timing also eased the nation's concerns, even though he did wind up with Alzheimer's likely first displayed in that debate.
This was the death blow. Mondale had pulled within eight points after the first debate, and we actually had hope....then this. I was at Mondale HQ in NYC watching this and it was just horrible.
In the early 1980's, my grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. At first he seemed normal and nothing much changed. But gradually, he began to start stumbling over his words, losing his short term memory and getting confused easily. By 1987, he was bedridden and talking to ghosts before finally passing away in 1988. When Ronald Reagan was running for reelection, his normally smooth delivery was gone in unscripted moments such as these debates or during his post reelection press conference. It looked all too familiar to me and I began to wonder whether it was just old age or something worse like Alzheimer's, There were times where he was okay and other times where he seemed totally out of it. But it was during his second term where the amount of press conferences and one on one interviews dropped noticeably. It seemed at times like his staff was very subtlety trying to hide something. Then in the early 1990's, there came the announcement. I wasn't surprised. If anything, I was saddened.

Where is this wit between opponents now? That response was classy and charming. Neither party has that savvy these days. It's all obnoxiously contrived. Bullying, name calling, mudslinging. I'll be naive, but has politics ever been about honor and intellect. Are we such savages that we can't agree to disagree and compromise. Why is it always my way or the highway.
