  • Defense is critical in boxing. Protecting yourself is equally - if not more - important than knocking out your opponent. #FightCamp Trainers, Tommy Duquette & Aaron Swenson, show you four (4) great #DEFENSIVEDRILLS FOR #BOXING to level up your blocking skills.
    The best way to improve your defensive techniques is with defensive drills, which incorporate both punch blocking and evasive footwork. We’ll take a closer look at punch blocking as a key component of defensive boxing, and run through some defensive boxing drills for you to try with a partner.
    How Do You Block Punches?
    Everyone may block punches a little differently so you will learn a lot of techniques from different trainers. With practice, you’ll start to take what you like best to use in your own fighting style. A great place to start is with these boxing defense basics.
    HOW TO BLOCK A PUNCH
    Jab
    1. Put slightly more weight on your rear leg to absorb shock
    2. Lift your rear hand up to protect your face
    3. Open your hand in your glove with your palm facing your opponent
    4. Meet your opponent’s jab with slight resistance
    *Don’t use too much resistance or you’ll end up pushing your hand down, leaving yourself open
    Cross
    1. Raise your lead arm so that your hand is almost behind your head
    2. Use your forearm to block the cross
    *If you use your glove to protect your face, you’ll still end up getting some shock to your head
    Hook
    1. Bend the knees slightly
    2. Pivot on your feet as you bend your torso and drop your elbow to your hip
    3. Use your elbow to block the hook
    How Do You Practice Blocking Punches?
    You practice blocking punches by doing defense drills. Start slowly so you can train your muscle memory and allow your brain to memorize the patterns in blocking each punch.
    DEFENSIVE BLOCKING DRILLS
    Try these four (4) boxing defense drills with a partner:
    Jab
    1. Both partners face each other in a fighting stance
    2. Partner 1 raises their rear hand to protect their face
    3. Partner 2 throws a jab as Partner 1 blocks with their rear hand
    4. Both partners return to starting position
    5. Repeat 5 times and switch
    Jab - Cross
    1. Both partners face each other in a fighting stance
    2. Repeat blocking pattern for the jab once
    3. Partner 1 raises lead arm with elbow in front, hand behind their head
    4. Partner 2 throws a cross as Partner 1 blocks with their forearm
    5. Both partners return to starting position
    6. Repeat 5 times and switch
    Jab - Cross - Lead Hook
    1. Both partners face each other in a fighting stance
    2. Repeat block pattern for jab-cross once
    3. Partner 1 bends their knees slightly, pivoting their feet to turn towards Partner 2’s lead hand
    4. Partner 1 drops their elbow to their hip
    5. Partner 2 throws a lead hook as Partner 1 blocks with their elbow
    6. Both partners return to starting position
    7. Repeat 5 times and switch
    Jab - Cross - Hook - Hook Body - Hook Body
    1. Both partners face each other in a fighting stance
    2. Repeat block pattern for jab - cross - hook
    3. Partner 2 follows the lead hook with a body hook to each side of Partner 1
    4. Partner 1 adjusts the same hook blocking technique to counter both body shots
    5. Both partners return to starting position
    6. Repeat 5 times and switch
    How Can I Practice Defense By Myself?
    Defensive blocking drills are an important aspect of boxing training, and it’s ideal to have a partner when practicing punches, but you can practice defense by yourself. Since effective defensive boxing moves develop largely from muscle memory, going through some of these patterns on your own can help you find your own rhythm as you move. Boxing defense can make or break a professional fight. An integral part of defensive training is learning how to block each incoming punch. Remember to start slow and use minimal impact force as you’re learning - the speed will come!

    Thank you so much .
    As a beginner I underestimated defence but I will strive to train on it everyday , as much as I do with offence.

      @@FightCamp Maybe some dietary videos that go well with training-like when and what to eat/drink before/after a workout.. why it’s best to do it at that time, etc. Or continuing to post more real-life drills to build stamina and strength.

    What’s the term used when you’re performing a choreographed fight and the actor is preemptively blocking? It’s on the tip of my tongue, but I can’t remember what it’s called

    that cross block can get you a injury in the elbow in open up the body so you cn take body punches

      It's boxing. There is not perfectly safe way, only compromises.

  • @CoachMario.Official

    That hook block upstairs is opening you up for a hard body shot, doesn't it?

    • @tommyduquette265
      @tommyduquette265 Рік тому +5

      Yes, but that's boxing. There's no way to be 100% safe in the ring. Throwing punches can open you up to counter punches.

      Train your body to be ready for any body shot. Please check Gabriel Varga explaining this in one of his videos.

    • @CoachMario.Official
      @CoachMario.Official 10 місяців тому

      @tinoborst7263 You can get away with it once or twice, but once your opponent sees that opening, he's going for it. There are so many body shots you can take even after training your body to take some of them. You definitely can't train the liver.

    • @tinoborst7263
      @tinoborst7263 10 місяців тому

      Sure, you can’t train the liver.
      But training yourself and your body to be ready for hard body shots might be a good thing to implement in your training.

    • @CoachMario.Official
      @CoachMario.Official 10 місяців тому +3

      @tinoborst7263 Have you ever heard the phrase "The goal in Boxing is to hit and not get hit"? That's what I teach my fighters, along with great conditioning. It's a fools errand to believe you can neglect defense based on your ability to take a punch. There's no way I would recommend to any of my young fighters to block a hook the way it's described in this video. Better be safe than sorry...but to each their own I guess.

    The comment section is ridiculous, yes you have to compromise and something will be open but you’re blocking what you’re trying to block which is the goal.
