Hey everybody, its your good buddy Uncle Ben Eller back again with a full lesson on how to survive the HARDEST John Petrucci licks featured in Overture 1928 by Dream Theater! If you're trying to get into learning DT tunes, this is a GREAT song to start with, but there's still a handful of parts that can be brutally hard to play. In this lesson video, i'm going to break down the toughest bits of the song, that way you can nail them and dominate this tune!
Gear:
Suhr Modern Satin
Dunlop T3 .88
Suhr Woodshed Compressor
REVV Generator 120
What John Petrucci song do you need help with next? Let me know in the comments!!!
Thanks for learning all my survival tips for Overture 1928! What Dream Theater song should be break down next?
Can you go over Metropolis Part 1? There is some deceptively funky runs in that song or the solo Arrival of Love by Circus Maximus. That solo has me totally criss crossed constantly.
Not a Dream Theater song but it is a progressive masterpiece. Can you break down the solo to Steven Wilson’s Ancestral. A Guthrie Govan classic.
Hero 🤘🏽 Cheers Uncle Ben. Maybe Innocence faded or solo to Under a glass moon. Thanks again
In the Name of God
I believe in you
Maybe Erotomania, Learning to Live, or The test that stumped them all?
Finally...my step-mom was asking whole day "Hasn't that handsome ponytail guy uploaded a video yet?"...
Tell her I said hi!!!
I bet she's hot
This is why I call him UNCY BANG! For hot step-mom milfs everywhere!
Hahahahah fuckin Ben Eller, my girlfriend likes him too. Everytime I'm watching and she comes in she stares for a second and every now and then she goes "I like this guy", and I just go "I know you do baby"....
@@mediumtalented9250 it's really the guitar playing
I probably listened to this song like 400x in the past month
Get a life then.
And please, change that profile picture.
@@Kevin-gb8gb you find me sexy?
WE NEED MORE "STUFF BLANK DOES" VIDEOS UNCLE BEN!!! Im not even a guitar player, im a drummer. And I can't play the drums without the neighbors below me freaking out! I watch your videos because of your ridiculous personality and boyish good looks!
You sir, are a drummer.
@@lueymeteora1410 guilty! What tipped you off? Was it when I said I was a drummer?
@@Blindashitmetalasfuck Cor! You got me! Lol
I always love a good slow blues. Thank you, Uncle Ben.
Love the nailed it face when you finish a killer lick
i just noticed the screws on the neck pickup at least are in perfect alignment. i am so dang satisfied right now, even my step dad couldn't ruin my mood!
Best lesson digest this masterpiece...I gave up learning this song a few months back. Thanks Ben for making we want to reattempt it.
And if possible can you make a similar video for the Under the Glass moon solo..I think it might be great
I was planning on learning this song fully when my RG1570 comes in the mail next week. Thanks Uncle Ben!
If anyone wants accurate dream theater tabs for the classic albums (image and words all the way through metropolis part 2, and the latest album, and john petruccis solo album) go to Evan Bradley's channel and email him.
if you can, donate to him because he emails these tabs for free, and has a transcription company.
great video as always!
This combined with strange de ja vu is such an incredible piece of music
4th favourite dream theater song!!
Thank you Ben! I’ve been playing this song for years, and just now realized I’ve had a few notes wrong in the unison section. Time to grab the guitar and go to work!
Your patented “Step Dad Speed” really helps work out those sections easily. Thank you so much for always posting stellar guitar instructional videos🤘🏼🎸
Gracias uncle Ben! I'll be working on this one over the weekend.
I’m always on the lookout for the self congratulatory smile when you nail a tricky solo. Love it!
Dang this was a very fun and hard for me 15 years ago. I wish I had this back then. Well done!
You're the bestest best step dad on the interwebs with arm hands. Seriously, awesome lessons. You're definitely one of the best teachers on UA-cam. Quality content bro
We used this song as a benchmark to prove ourselves back when we were 16 in 2006.
Just to get the initial downward scale half right could crown you local guitar God of your town.
Greetings from Italy.
So real talk... ever since i found your "this is why your hand sync sucks at guitar" video i've been like... that's the key.... i can finally play overture 1928 once i do like 6 months of metronome work. that was 5 months ago, and it's almost there. I think this lesson will push me over the goal line.
the tab i had for the fastest sextuplet part was just wrong. I think it'll be a lot easier with what you showed here.
The cross picking thing is really cool. I was trying to do this section with sweeps and it wasn't really working out. I was ready to be like "well... this part will just sound like shit and i'm ok with that", but i'll see if i can work out the cross picking thing.
Once again, thanks for all the lessons! I'll work out some way of giving you money once my step dad give me my allowance.
This is perfect timing holy shit thank you!
Thanks for sharing, probably eleventeen in practice years away for me but still really enjoyed it. Cheers
I LITERALLY just finished learning this song yesterday and was trying to improve my execution of these sections!!! Thanks a lot Uncle Ben!
Hello Ben,
Thank you very much.
Also my absolute favorite DT song ever. Haven't played this tune for a while.
I am currently practicing it again after watching your video.
These are excactly the parts I was struggling with.!! :-)
I love you ben! Your lessons make me play better every day! Greetings from Chile 🇨🇱
Best lessons on UA-cam. Per usual, thank you for uploading.
thank god you mentioned pick slanting for the first fast scale, it helped me a lot!
That album is just sooo damn cool... love it
Dude I’m literally putting the final touches (midi keyboards parts etc) to a guitar cover of this song. Where the F was this video like 2 months ago! Hahah awesome work. I was learning this song from my old tab book, and the timing on the “picking purgatory” section took longer to nail than the rest of the song combined.
I never have listen to dream theater read his articles but your lesson breaks down what a great guitarist he is and you for teaching us this you are very skilled thankyou
I just needed some Uncle Ben in my life
As usual, a stellar effort! Love this! Shanksh!
Ben, you're a beast! Gonna have to try this one this weekend.
Great breakdown! This song is a challenge we should all accept!
Thaaaank Yooooou! For a friend of mine, that may or may not happen to be attempting this one for like the 4th time..
Bought my first ever guitar 3 months ago (Harley Benton CST24 Deluxe), and desided Overture to be THE song I want to learn.
I'm way over my head here 🙆
Haha that’s a STEEEEEP learning curve for sure. Peruvian Skies isn’t too bad, take a swing at that one.
Ben, love you vidoes, man!
Just signed up on Patreon. I love your channel Ben!
great video Uncle Ben
Awesome song. Really glad you did this one.
Fantastic, only just started learning this recently
OMG dude I've had so many teachers try to teach the swiping out of my playing. You are awesome.
It’s great for certain things!!!
@@BenEller I'm too much of an alternate picker - I see the value in swiping but alternate picking works for me
This is the first dream theater guitar solos I learned. It was so fun making my guitar sound like John's i didnt play anything else for atleast a month lol
and just so covered every problem area that I had with this song... great job, thank you uncle Ben!
That technique of going through the bottom string instead of going around for odd number picking really helped with faster playing. Thanks for the tip!
Hey Ben. Yes. Us Britishers got a mench! Cheer mate !,
haha cheers man!!
So my Google Pixel's news feed recommended this video to me. Odd, right, but I'm glad it did, because I love it!
That cross picking section has been haunting me for the last 15-16 years!! Argh - time to get it DOWN!
JP song next? The glass prison intro(You know which part..)
Awesome video;)
Best explanation I’ve seen ever! (Still way to hard for me, but let’s practice).
That's so weird! That's the DT clip I was watching just 15 minutes prior to getting notification for this tutelage.
Finally!!!!!!, Thx Uncle
Great job! And to think you broke all that down and didn't once ask why John left Ibanez or why MP left DT? Amazing clarity and focus! :)
Finally, Step-Dad Ben is touching me in a way I never thought possible. More of this please.
The best guitar tips in UA-cam! Super Uncle Ben🙌🏻🎸🔥
Your technique is insane Ben!
I have been learning this for a couple weeks now. Impeccable timing, Unc
I've been waiting for this video since 1999
Ben Eller is the man!!!
You Sir are a great teacher as well as a fine player.
Loving the tutorial and always love the humor.
It's probably the Dream Theater instrumental that I know best though there are bits that I definitely never learned properly and still fudge my way through even after 20+ years of playing it. It's also one of my favorite DT songs overall.
I've finally learned this properly in its entirety along with strange deja vu after it. It only took 2 years of playing it every time I pick up a guitar. I'll probably forget it after a month of not playing it.
Great vid , such a killer song.
First comment! Great vid, as usual. One of the best UA-cam shredders is Uncle Ben!
Thanks Unc!
great vid ! that upstroke trick helped a lot. my fingers trip up on the riff just before the riff that includes the unison section. maybe i'm missing something simple? I didn't see it covered in this vid.
Heck yeah!
Hey Ben!!!
Ok that Revv is a beautiful thing.
That swipe technique gets a swipe right.
good explanation.... thank you!
You rule man. Thx
Uncle Ben beasting as usual.
2:25 laughed out loud. Your personality never gets old Uncle Ben
This song rocks! Do Erotomania next!
Awesome content. Subscribed!
Awesome video as always dude! Any insight into John's picking technique with regards to pick slanting and such? I've wanted him to show up on Cracking The Code for sooo long.
The stems are from Jammit, if you're handy you'll find them on google.
The perfect place to START!? 😲 I'm screwed lol
Endless Sacrifice!
Can you do Erotomania solo's ? nice vid btw
Okay I love this song and the video but the thumbnail led me to believe that John Petrucci would be making an appearance 😡
11:15 imo its a chromatic run on D string (14 15 16) after that everything is correct (14 16 17), that sounds a little better and still playable :D that kinda makes this lick Gb blues
Woah! hair looking nice
Haha thank you!!!
11:40 - yup
This was great. All the tabs out there for this song are wrong and I resorted, like you, to slowing down some videos to learn the trickier portions a couple years ago. I doubt it was 100%, but I gave it the old college try. Or, a "step dad try."
You should absolutely do In the Presence of Enemies Pt 1 for those insane unison parts that I can't even physically move my fingers fast enough to play (damn you pinky!), or Stream of Consciousness/In the Name of God. Another good idea would be a seven string song with some very tricky riffs like The Enemy Inside.
✋ *Uncle Ben! Step-Dad Luey here!*
Can you make it even more slow-li-er ? Tha-anks ! 🤗
*UNCLE BEN!*
HELLO!
Bro what timing. I was literally listening to overture a couple months back and I was like, I wanna learn this song. Then finally 3 weeks of struggling I was able to get all the parts down except the part after the second solo so I gave up. But I just revisited it again to see if I can play it and I still can't play some of the parts with 100 percent speed and accuracy.
Ima upload a cover to youtube when I can do it. I'll post it here
Benjamin: “YOU’RE GONNA HIT THAT GODDAMN CAT!!”
OH MY GOD!!!
@@BenEller I love you still
Great video, Uncle Ben!
Beautiful Suhr there.
Can someone explain how can one use a very high-wattage amp at home and still get a good tone at non-earth-shattering volumes?
I did a lot of digging but nobody seems to have an actual concrete answer.
Dude, the REVV has a built-in Two Notes Torpedo, so you can run it straight into your interface and monitors at any volume. It’s also switchable to 10 watt mode!!!!
7:31 See this is why my fingers hate you Ben!!!
DUDE YOU NAILED IT! Oh btw Satan called he's burning up 🔥👹
Riddupp- Riddupp Froggy.
ROCK ON BEN ! 👊 🎸
Have u checked out the band, THE HU? MONGOLIAN METAL \m/
My goodness uncle Ben, your effortless picking technique frustrates me.
Awesome stuff!
Challenge accepted - can you do the main solo on "Voices" all the way to the end.
This was fantastic Ben. That being said, your accent has given me the desire to order BBQ tonight.
You’re welcome! Raise a rib for me!
@@BenEller I mean it'll have to be Canadian-Texan BBQ, so might turn your nose up at it, but I know no better. :)
Also, I just ordered a Revv Generator 120 MK3. Yours was one of the videos that helped make my mind up. I was considering a 5153, but I think this will do what I want without all the hiss.
This is probably a bit controversial, but I always preferred this as an instrumental over dance of eternity
Me too. This one sounds like a little narrative, Dance sounds like an anthology of complex riffs.
This is my favorite DT song by far.
I think one complements the other perfectly. Overture is a perfect album opener, the arrangements of the main themes you're going to listen on the album are just amazing, and it is a very satisfying composition to listen to. The Dance is the opposite: dark, chaotic, but still incredibly well written, each part flows into the next one seemlessly, which is one of the achievements of Overture as well
Where were you last year when I had to learn this ungodly mess of a song ON MY OWN, Uncle Ben?!?! WHERE WERE YOU?!?!
Tighter than a frogs asshole! Holy crap you had me dying. But seriously this is awesome! Thank you! This will be my next dream theater song to learn now. Definitely a great song. Just never thought to try it.
16:43 still in my nightmares lol
I thought I had it but then she turned me into a newt!
I must say I like those Rubik's cubes my fellow nerd. You have the fast fingers, what's you best solve time bro?
Nice lesson uncle Ben!
Need to learn some DT? you guys should check out Mr Evan Bradley.
2:52 I got a straight 6 watching this video
