Fr. Behr has been lecturer on a couple of my theology courses at Aberdeen. Nothing better than listening and learning to this intelligent man!

Wonderful discussion by a great panel of cerebral, knowledgeable and quite humble men of Orthodoxy. Of course very well navigated with great questions by you Sr. Vassa. You can see the humility in all these men which is quite the antithesis when you hear Evangelical discussions by men like Benny Hinn and company.

Thanks Sr. Vassa and Frs. for engaging the troubles the Church faces, addressing the pitiful lack of understanding of the nature of Church and its global administration in our day. For over a century we’ve seen a battle between Moscow and Constantinople for dominance in a zero-sum conflict that actually causes shrinkage of the church and mass cynicism. Also, our obsession with borders of the confession has completely shut out any efforts toward reconciliation between Eastern and Oriental Orthodox and the Church of the East. It’s so common to hear clergy of middling intellect and education condemn the followers of traditional churches outside the ‘Byzantine commonwealth’ as rank heretics, when they are our closest brothers and sisters.
The sacramental hierarchical traditional liturgical churches have so much in common and by all rights ought to be recognizing each others’ validity and orthodoxy and so working together in a diverse yet complimentary witness in their respective fields of mission, yet we remain by and large strangers and even competitors.

Fr. John says that as church became universal geographically, it became more inward theologically and the church became all about territory and hierarchy. In other words, it became more and more worldly. As it attached its fate to the state, to the nation, it took on more and more the nation's spirit, the spirit of the world, the spirit of the fallen principalities and powers. And if we must be blunt, which we must, the spirit of worldly power, the spirit of violence and coercion, is not and cannot be the spirit of Christ and his gospel.

Great talk! I especially like Sister Vassa's comment about needing hierarchs & fathers to help us navigate the flood of Grace. This, and Fr. Cyril's relaying Aphrahat's metaphor were really helpful in thinking about ecclesiology.

Скоріш за все так, бо отець Бер та отець Лаут - обидва британці.

Sister Vassa, thank you for the English subtitles! As a non-British listener, sometimes the British accent is super enigmatic and causes a "spot of bother" to the untrained ear! 😊
