  • Building a budget electric skateboard that’s actually pretty good. Save money and build your board your way!
    Here are the parts I use for this build:
    Dual motor ESC with remote:
    www.ebay.com/i...
    Hub motors - the ones I used aren’t available anymore. Here are the newer 90mm ones I mentioned:
    www.ebay.com/it...
    This is the battery used for this build. It looks like HobbyKing might not stock it anymore:
    hobbyking.com/...
    An alternative is to use two 3S batteries in series - both will fit in the sandwich container.
    hobbyking.com/...
    hobbyking.com/...
    Deck and Griptape:
    www.skateshred....
    skateshred.com also has other skateboard stuff like hardware, risers, and a skate tool.
    B6AC v2 LiPo Balance Charger:
    www.ebay.com/s...
    Parallel Balanced Charging Board:
    www.amazon.com...
    Sandwich containers:
    www.amazon.com...
    Screws and washers can be found at most hardware stores like Homedepot:
    sheet metal screws: #6 x 3/8” (for screwing the container to the deck)
    sheet metal screws: #6 x 1/2” (for mounting ESC)
    flat washers: #8
    Rotary tool:

    Meepo Board:
    meepoboard.com/
    I haven’t bought anything from there yet but it looks like a good place to buy a complete board or just components. The battery with case especially looks good.

    Hey, incredible video! Small tip that comes from flying rc planes, they make eBay lipo battery voltages that go up to 6 or 8s and have beepers on that you can set low voltage alarms, I generally try to not dip below 3.6 per cell they will last longer than going to 3.3-3.4

    Nice video, lots of good info. Would be interesting to know how well the PCBs hold up to mechanical stress over time and whether there is any stuff one could do to reduce the impact of that. Similarly I wonder if anyone can think of a source of skinny IP65ish rated enclosures that could be repurposed for housing the components.

    I did a charge n ride with extra battery packs to extend my range on my electric unibike and EUC through the charging port. I’m wondering if I can do the same for my electric skateboard as the charger goes directly into the battery with a DC power plug? My electric board supposed goes up to 12 miles but I want to extend it to 20 miles.

    Hubmotors with flange and 3 screws may not be as durable as hubmotor with shaft.
    The truck may break easier.

      I just put together my new build using the same 90mm motors as the Meepoboard. They are very nice! The 83mm motors I used in the video have been holding up well, but I agree the 90mm motors with the shaft are better.

    You can get those same hub motors significantly cheaper from Meepo boards. The shippping is high like it is for the ebay ones but the motors are only $40 a piece and the truck is dirt cheap too. They have the same speed control with remote for about the same price. I imagine you'll save $30-50 bucks going through Meepo.

    • @orensprojects7250
      @orensprojects7250  7 років тому

      Buying from Meepo is a good option. The price will probably be close to the same as eBay if you also include the front truck and wheels ($40 for each motor, probably around $20 for rear truck, maybe around $30 for the front wheels, truck, and hardware). That'll probably add up to around $130, like eBay. The shipping used by "eboard-shop" on eBay is a bit expensive at $43, but arrived at my door around 4 or 5 days after I placed the order. It's great there are multiple options for buying these components at such a good price!

    Have you heard of Mellowdrive; where the power system is there and you can put it on most if not all boards? I'm building my own, it's going to be an over engineered project with four 6374 motors and 12s4p battery and four VESC's....

    • @orensprojects7250
      @orensprojects7250  6 років тому

      Thanks for kind words! That's awesome you built your board! If you want longer range I think the 5S/5Ah batteries are the biggest I've commonly seen (and will fit well under the board). I was getting around 8 miles using two 5S/3Ah batteries - so the 5Ah should be a big improvement. Also, push starting and trying to find the smoothest parts of the road helps. That is a wicked build for the price my friend! You mentioned the braking was a little lacking. In regards to esc's and braking did you prefer the VESC or the ESC? Great work, I think I may build a new board now, haha.
    - Neil

    • @orensprojects7250
      @orensprojects7250  7 років тому +2

      Thanks! Yeah, I think building is the best way to go. I definitely like the braking better on the VESC, mainly because I can configure it to whatever I like. The VESC is VERY configurable and higher quality, but more than 4x the price (you need 2 VESC + remote). The VESC is a good choice if you like tuning your board and want to experiment with different voltages and setups. The dual ESC I'm using in this video is actually an older revision. I think the braking is a bit stronger on the newer ones. Also, I think different motors will brake differently, so it's difficult to predict exactly what the braking will be like. I'm working on a build now with a newer version of the dual ESC and the 90mm motors I showed in the video. Once that's done I'll be able to compare.

    • @BigKidsOfficial
      @BigKidsOfficial 7 років тому

      I'm riding on an ESC and VESC on 2 boards I currently have. I'm not a big fan of the breaking on the ESC but like you mentioned the flexibility of the VESC is so choice! Building is such a better experience then out of the box for sure. DIY isn't for everyone but it's really so rewarding. I compare DIY to Full builds like a modified Camero vs a one size fits all Toyota Camry. Please keep posting videos. I'm a big fan of the medium as it takes work to go that extra step to get behind a camera (in addition to building your own board). Let's stay in touch!

      @orensprojects7250  7 років тому +1

      Nice! I think most people that build boards end up with more than one because they get so into it :). I just started testing a new build with the 90mm motors and a newer version of the ESC. The braking is definitely better now!

      @BigKidsOfficial 7 років тому +1

      90mm motors! That is huger 🤓 I would love to give those motors a go. Please update us when you get there. Yeah, I love the DIY perspective as variety makes for a better world! Even if you don't build a whole new board you can update the one you have. Again, great video and hope to see more from you soon!

    I had to come back with a question. Can that ESC use any number of 18650 cells or does it have a voltage limit? I hope that question is understandable. I'm not an EE. Thanks.

    • @orensprojects7250
      @orensprojects7250  7 років тому

      The ESC can be configured to 6, 7, or 10 cells in series (max voltage of 25.2V, 29.4V, or 42V). Changing the voltage requires a bit of tricky soldering so you can request it in the voltage you need when you order. I talk about it around 11:14. Hope this helps.

    11:09 What brand/make is that receiver you have connected to your VESC? I'm building a single VESC-equiped belt-driven board and wanted to re-use a spare remote (same as what you have) from my diyeboard kit. Thanks!

    • @orensprojects7250
      @orensprojects7250  6 років тому +1

      The remote I use with the VESCs is different than the one that comes with the dual ESC. The receiver is built into the board of the dual ESC and it comes with its own remote. The remote I'm using with the VESC is made by a company called Winning. Similar to this one:

    • @orensprojects7250
      @orensprojects7250  7 років тому

      Yes, there is only 1 battery connector on the ESC. If you use 2 batteries then you'll also need a xt-60 series connector (the link is in the description for the connector). You can charge them using a parallel charging board. I show this in my newer video at around 8:43 ua-cam.com/video/qdylrv1iSHI/v-deo.html. You can search for videos on how to parallel charge - like this ua-cam.com/video/7wj-EB4-71M/v-deo.html. You can also use 10S (2 5S) batteries if you want more power and speed. The only difference is you need to specify 10S when you order the ESC and you'll have to mount the batteries differently (like in my longboard build).

      The price difference between the orange 83mm motors I use in this video and the newer black 90mm motors isn't that big. The 83mm are $130, but don't include the front trucks and wheels. The 90mm are $173 (incl. shipping) and include the front trucks and wheels. Also, the 90mm motors are definitely higher quality and support 10S voltage. • @orensprojects7250
      @orensprojects7250  6 років тому

      This build only has 1 battery, so I just plug it in directly to the ESC. When there are 2 batteries, like in the longboard build, I use a series connector. hobbyking.com/en_us/xt60-series-adaptor-2pcs-per-bag.html

    • @orensprojects7250
      @orensprojects7250  6 років тому

      One reason the ESC beeps is when the battery voltage is too low, and the battery needs to be recharged

  • @carlsonabel5526
    @carlsonabel5526 6 років тому

    Does the esc have a xt60 or xt90 connector?

    what charger should i use with this setup?

    • @orensprojects7250
      @orensprojects7250  7 років тому

      I added links in the description to what I use. The balance charging board is only needed if you use multiple batteries.

    meepo board is cheaper or is this somehow better ?

    • @orensprojects7250
      @orensprojects7250  7 років тому +2

      The meepoboard is about the same price when you include shipping. What I like about custom builds is you can choose parts you like. I prefer the drop-through deck and non-abrasive grip tape in this build. Also, the battery setup I used is easier to interchange for long rides. If you prefer something already built, I think meepo is a great option. Meepo also sells the motors, ESC, and battery at a good price if you want a custom board.

      @orensprojects7250  7 років тому

      Yes, black would be cool :). I should at least take the sandwich labels off. One nice thing about leaving the case clear is I can easily see the lights to check if the board is on.

    Isn't dickyho actually Jason Volans from diyeboard.com?

    • @orensprojects7250
      @orensprojects7250  7 років тому

      I don't know. If he speaks fluent English than probably not. I've emailed back and forth with Dicky Ho and Engligh is definitely not his first language. It looks like diyeboard.com sells parts similar to Dicky Ho, Meepoboard, and others. I wonder who's the source manufacture for those ESCs and motors.

    Is it waterproof tho

    • @orensprojects7250
      @orensprojects7250  6 років тому

      If the openings in the battery and ESC containers are sealed better it should be waterproof. Right now I'd say it's splash resistant.

      Ordered the same esc and wheels with this shop. Went through 3 esc already. One becasue of shortcut by power button touching the esc, stupid i know, and an other one because i did something wrong soldering the wire of power button which came loose. Now the esc is dead again even when i got a new power button. Have a 2x5s battery with it and top speed is about 40 km/h. Board rides smooth and can't wait till i can ride it again. So frustrating. ....

    • @orensprojects7250
      @orensprojects7250  7 років тому

      Those 90mm motors are fast at 10S! One of the wires on the power button of my ESC got disconnected too. I was able to solder it back on and it's working fine now. I think those wires are kind of fragile so it helps to make sure the motor wires are out of the way and not hitting the back of the switch when the board bounces around while riding. I've burned out a motor once so I know how frustrating it is waiting for replacement parts!

      @orensprojects7250  6 років тому

      It can't be configured to go any faster using 6S. It might be a bit faster if I reconfigure to 10S. I'm not sure if the motors on this board can handle that through. Checkout my longboard build for a faster board.
