    Can someone explain why silicone is expensive rather with other similar plastics?

    • @yasirrakhurrafat1142
      @yasirrakhurrafat1142 6 місяців тому

      For one, it is made of solicon, elemental silicon (a metal).
      Which is.. I'm sure.. more expensive than hydrocarbons i.e raw material that polymers/plastics are usually synthesized from.
      Hydrocarbons are gas/oils.
      Petrol,/gasoline, etc.
      Plus the process of synthesizing silicon may be different, more expensive, more work, than common plastics.

    Is it reuse or recycle ? What to do with waste of silicone rubber? Or dried silicone

    Starting my first-year of chemistry at the University of Helsinki! Thank you for highlighting the field of chemistry!
    Ps. Any opinion on the future of chemists in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry?

    What elements can you mix to make silicone other that dioxide

    one time i was mixing some plant stuff like i think potassium silicate, and maybe citric acid i think? i was just putting the right amounts in a shot glass so i could pour it in the water, and it did this crazy thing where it gelled up and was really interesting but even though i measured it out and wrote it down i couldn't really replicate it... maybe i accidentally added some phosphate on accident and forgot... but it made me wonder how silicone was made...

    Why do solvents, glues polymers seems like such a dark art?
    Hidden behind commercial formulations and patents.
    Pharmaceuticals comparatively seem quite open... Or am I imagining things?
