Why I Left YouTube At 100K Subscribers In Order To Come Back Permanently

I recommend treating this video more like a podcast if you're not interested in the visuals. Also, there is a Discord link below if you'd like to join one for the channel.
This video is a long-overdue 100K subscribers special. It's a story not about any issue with UA-cam itself, rather a story about setting the right example for being a representative in the EDU community. It had to be pushed back for reason covered in the video.
/ discord Link the the channels Discord if you would like join.
I decided against putting all that much music in the video after the beginning, it just constantly sounded like I wanted to make everything overly emotional. Some parts of the story are not happy, but I didn't want to just have music in the background just to keep people from getting bored and I didn't want to force anything. It is what it is.
Beyond that, the idea of making UA-cam a financial endeavor is very foreign to me. I have never used a lot of services like patreon and stuff, I have an account I never used. But that might be something to look into.

This was a very compelling story. You're in the right place, Dale. UA-cam is an ocean, but the EDU community is here and supports your work.
Side note: the deeper I get into making videos, the more I have to fight to ensure my ego isn't a prisoner of the platform. A large part of avoiding that trap was to develop a mission. It sounds like you have one, so hold on to it tight! It will pull you through ups and downs better than any sub count or paycheck.
Can't wait to see what you'll do next. You know where to find me if you ever need a chat.

Hey Will, it's nice to see you here! I definitely care about the EDU community a lot, which has contributed to some of my decisions. I hope it pays off.
I completely agree about developing a mission. It's easier to stay on a path when you plan out where exactly or at least roughly where you want to go. Over the years I have found that many large UA-camrs almost treat there fame as a constant in the moment experience, and it can lead to disastrous instances in order to improve your "in the moment" situation for gaining fame and attention. Always thinking about the content that you make, and what kind of long term impact it may have is a wise move. *cough suicide forest video*
All that said, it's been wonderful to see people rise up in the EDU community. New faces, new ideas, new approaches, and it all keeps the platform in community growing and fresh. And they, people like yourself, motivate me to keep up!
Thanks for the comment and I'll catch you around.
      -Dale

That makes me happy, and I think that contributes to it. Thank you for the comment and I hope to keep seeing you around! Take care!

Now that I plan on taking UA-cam more seriously, I will start to look into ways to help raise funds to keep things afloat. At the moment, I am only about $600 short a month from being able to do this full time, so I may look into just a part-time job or even set up something with a few perks if people would not mind helping me out. There is a lot to think about. If you would like to be more involved with what I plan on doing, feel free to join the channels discord and/or follow my twitter (@DaleWinslow). Take care.

Dale, I just wanted to say that you've always been such a positive figure in this community. The way that you interact with your audience indicates such a great level of care that frankly seems uncommon among content creators nowadays. You've always pushed the discussion further in the comments, which I've always appreciated. Not only have I always enjoyed your content, but I've also always enjoyed interacting with you. If I didn't do that I would not have really had the opportunity to get to know people like you. That's the only thing that's bothered me the most about having this become a big UA-cam channel, losing contact with people. Dont be embarrassed by using Patreon. Small contributions help and you are providing a product. It's free as well and donations is something many subscribers would love to do. I'm sure you have really impacted many and a 2 or 3 bucks a month is a small price to pay for knowledge that people yearn for.

    • @thinkfact

For me, UA-cam has never been about money so it's weird to get in that mindset. It's mostly been gas money, but that won't be a financial necessity for a while, lol. I've always felt a bit embarrassed to ask for money, I don't do it in my personal life, and I've never done it here. That said, I really want this to work and I realize if I can get some help I can actually make this work. I'm going to have to think about perks and such, I created a discord, link in the description, and I might have extra perks in there as well. What I plan on doing is anybody who donates will be placed on my channels banner, and after a certain point, I will put them in the credits of the video. Still just a bunch of ideas. I subscribed way back in the Vsauce days and was excited to see where you were going. Hearing that you left to focus on school really made me start thinking about what I'd do in college myself. Back then I had just dropped out of 7th grade, meaning I had an elementary level education and no desire to go back to school. Your dedication to learning meant a lot to me, and now, I'm in my second year of college with all As so far. Its hard for sure, but hearing your story, I know its possible. I think you're probably the one who introduced me to the idea of being an anthropologist, and now that's my major that I plan on taking to PhD. Welcome back to the edu side of UA-cam, I cant wait to see what you'll do next!

Wow! I had no idea I had that impact on you and I'm really thankful you shared that! It takes a lot of determination to go back to school after something like that and push forward! But I'm thankful my story has given you something to strive for! I wish you luck in your studies! You could go on to teach yourself! Or even work on projects from archaeological works all the way to research pertaining to understanding people and our impact on things! Go all the way for that PhD! I wish you luck, and if you were able to get this far don't let anything hold you back! I'm rooting for you!
Take care, and I wish you the best! Hope to see you around too. :)

Thank you for the comment. I felt that in the case of this video sometimes it's more helpful to understand where a person is coming from in order to contextualize the intent behind what they do. I love talking about deep questions and such, but I also like to be optimistic and show people that misfortune doesn't have to dictate our life. Sometimes being able to here another person story can even motivate us on a personal level.

Was very happy to see your videos pop up again, this is one of my favorite channels. I love science and philosophy. Told my girlfriend about you and how much I respect the channel. I started watching when I was single but now am engaged. She agrees with me, you look and sound like Bo Burnham!
Your story will surely resonate with many of your viewers including me. I've always been pretty good with English but after the death of my parents and struggling social life and alienation that likely related much to your own, I couldn't mentally handle advanced courses, but I did well later on after highschool.
Thanks for sharing your story. It's an inspiring story of triumph.

Dale... great back story and as a father and a son and a brother and a husband I want you to know I subscribed to your channel as I too value learning. Your past struggles define you as you have learned and are learning still that what sets you apart is not what sets you back. have faith that your life is making a sound that others enjoy listening to. Since you are an English Minor I know that reading this makes you cringe as my grammar is terrible.... Keep doing what your doing. You are making a difference, at least in one person's life.

And no worries about your grammar, this isn't some report. Haha. As an anthropologist first and foremost, I find language fascinating as a tool to convey ideas. If one does that effectively, which you have, I don't really get bothered at all. haha

I haven't gone through the comments, but I'm sure there are several that have suggested Patrion, and I do as well. It has helped so many UA-camrs since the ad-pocalypse. And we, the viewers, get so much satisfaction helping creators that would otherwise have to drop their passion just because they can't support themselves with that alone.

    • @thinkfact
      @thinkfact  5 років тому

I'm actually in the process of creating one in response to some of the comments other people have made. I never made one before because I felt awkward wanting to ask for money for a hobby. But now that I want to see if I can treat this like an actual job, it doesn't feel as awkward. I'm a little bit new to the interface and what is expected, so I'll put a day or so into it and submit it for review. No idea how long it will take though. That being said, once I can get myself to a point where I'm completely self sustainable, I will be quite relieved! Thank you very much for the recommendation and the comment! Take care!

I started watching your videos when I was small - too young for my own good, admittedly - & you're still one of the few channels I do return to after all these years. I have a bad habit of letting go of interests in very fast succession; certain games, entertainers, etc. I drop frequent, but besides a few life-long interests your work is probably one of the most permanent things I've always returned to. My fondest memories are watching the Confactsci streams & setting up the Potato Cult subreddit & the sister thinkfact subreddit which I'll have to relaunch & refurbish. It was just so amazing to have that connection with you & the others, & I always loved how responsive you were in the comments. When we had that very brief chat on Skype - that you might very well not remember - that blew my mind that I could be in contact with you. Something I remembered a few weeks past is that I'd send some of your videos to my teacher at the time, & he'd actually put it up for the entire class. Everyone else was totally confused by the content of it, but me, my teacher, & a couple others did appreciate & understand it.
So just, thank you for everything. You're a fantastic creator & I wish you the best of luck in the future.

Ah Mauro, I was hoping you would show up. It's been really nice to hear from you over the years, you have been one of the channel's few constants. I think one of the saddest parts about coming back after all this time is that many of my UA-cam content creator friends have moved on. I'll have to look into doing a lot more networking again, but it'll never be quite the same. That said, I'm not sad that it's over, I'm happy that happened. Maybe one day I'll be able to do a video with those guys again, something special. ;)
Also, I always find it surreal when I hear about my content being shown in schools. But, it's always an amazing feeling too. Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words and the comment, thank you for your own contributions to our wonderful community! If you use Discord, I created a channel for the community. It's been quite lively over the past few hours, feel free to join! Catch you around.

@@thinkfact I just want to say your reply really put a smile on my face; & I'm sorta blown away that someone has remembered my presence for such a while. Since me finding your content was benign, just one of those moments of internet serendipity, where the algorithms had happened to should one of your videos, & I watched. And when you finished your videos with that open-invite to discuss, I took advantage of it, & here I am some 4? years on. And yeah, I understand that pain of losing someone that was once close to you, or at least you enjoyed their company. There's many friends who I've lost most contact with, & when we try to spark it back up again it always goes out - as you said, it'll never be quite the same again. But like you said, it's better just to smile upon the good times & move on. Alas, both of us are young (I just realized your as old as my oldest brother, & he has just essentially started his life with his new job in a new town) so not like it's gonna be too too hard. :p

Hello Dale, i'm Alejandro from Colombia and just wanted to say 2 things: 1. i´ve been your susbcriber for a long time and missed your videos, now that you are back, can´t wait to see how a different mindset may take you to new horizons, i'll support you, man. 2. The problem with decisions is that you always think about what you could be if ...
Do not worry about that, every person has the right to make mistakes if they make a bad decision and can live with the consequences of that, but nothing will make up for making a decision that your heart does not want, if you have peace of mind you can face any challenge.

Thank you Alejandro for the comment! I appreciate you sticking around with me all this time. I been able to think a lot about different topics and such, and I hope to incorporate that into future videos.
And I think that's great advice, sometimes we just have to keep looking forward. If we constantly ask ourselves what if, we can fail to appreciate what could come next. I will always make mistakes, I think it's important to accept that and become a wiser person from it.
My heart is in my work, and that makes it all worth it! Thank you so much! Take care of yourself and I hope to keep seeing you around!

I should say the same to you. You have been here for quite a while. I sometimes found it easy to forget the ultimate goal while being in school and just having things passing by. But it's really an awesome opportunity, and often a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be in an environment like that. So always say try to take full advantage of it, both the good times and hard times because we can learn from both. Take care and I wish you the best of luck with your studies! Love to hear it when people are in Maine! Hope to catch you around again. ;)

It's always so good to see your smiling face...and I hope you will always smile when you learn and educate others. I've never been to college I only have high school diploma... both institutions and other negative people in my life have always made me feel like I was stupid and never smart enough. And it really scared me... but I still wanted to learn, especially psychology, history, philosophy, anything that would engage both either one-on-one conversation or with an entire group of people. You are a man I would love to engage with and discuss philosophy and other topics effecting the world... Because of you and your channel, I still have the desire to continue learning even if my research and efforts don't get me a degree... I've got you a lot of pain suffering and Misfortune over the last few years and in many cases it's only because of my willingness to continue to learn and educate myself that keeps me moving forward and in many cases living. You are a remarkable example of what a good person should be like being both truthful to yourself and to others while still showing love consideration to those whose lives you affected and I want to say that you have affected mine in a very good way. I hope that one day despite our busy schedules and struggles that we get a chance to talk and discuss philosophies of life and just have fun learning from each other. Thank you for your long attention and thank you for being you.

Aw, thank you so much! I've been very fortunate that I've been able to stay so optimistic in spite of my own troubles. I was able to do that because I had keep people in my own life who encouraged me to take that hurt, to take the disappointment, and use that to become wiser and to push harder for my dreams. If I in anyway can help encourage people to also hold on and keep doing something that makes their days better, that makes all the work that goes into this 100% worth it. I was also told growing up that I wouldn't be smart enough to do certain things, and that lowered my own self-esteem. But once I found this community, I found that sometimes it's better to ignore the critics and at least try for the sake of people you personally care about and even yourself.
There's a lot of great content online, and that has helped me enrich my own life in a manner I'm sure it's been helping you. Maybe one of these days, you can do some night classes at a University. You might like it. My own stepfather started to take classes in his 50s, just one or two a semester, but he found it extremely enriching and I'm proud of him. Never feel like you're out of time, because if that was the case I wouldn't have come back to this channel after I graduated.
Take care Sean, I wish you a lifetime of happiness and learning! :)

Thank you for the comment! I did not know how the video would be received, but I felt it was important to make before I moved on. I'm very thankful and fortunate to have had a wonderful community like this develop around my work. As for bullying, I found that sometimes the hurt we feel can become something that consumes us, and grows more painful. I have tried to take the hurt, and turn it into something to learn from and improve my own life. Empathize with people, and relate to them.
Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and I hope to catch you around!

I never comment but i just subscribed and have been watching your older videos all night. just wanna say i really appreciate you sharing your story because it honestly inspires me so much. not just because of the success youre having and been having but because you seem like such an authentic and good-natured person who refuses to let the world bring them down. i may be projecting some of that because idk maybe i need a hero right now, but still, its awesome to hear how you started your youtube career and have pursued it at all times in some way shape or form, just out of a sheer determination to accomplish what you set out to do in the beginning. ive made music for almost ten years now and have taught myself everything i know. its such an uphill battle doing anything worth while. you start out so small and it seems like youll never be as good as you actually want to be, but the work keeps you going and you slowly learn skills that separate you from the pack, then, you just keep going. so thanks for the inspiration man and thanks for making me a smarter person with your well researched videos.

You are an incredible smart complex and very mature individual, paradoxically something of a hard to find in this information age. And that has been accomplished by sticking to your values and being sincere with yourself. This can be hard but at the end it can yield a result that you can be more identified with in any and all aspects of your life. Keep it up, you are more of an example than you think and the kind of person we need in the world.

Thank you very much for the kind words! I find that a lot of big UA-camrs nowadays, or at least the ones constantly making the news, just live in the moment, they don't think about the long-term consequences of their actions. I'm very thankful I've had people around me and instances in my life that made me very self-aware of long-term consequences of one's actions. I try to think in the long term constantly, I think that's helped me as a person. And hopefully, it can help other people to!
I appreciate you sharing your thoughts, and I hope if I do become successful I can jumpstart a positive chain reaction in other content creators, or even potential ones.
Take care and I hope to keep seeing you around! Have a good one!

I am an English education major at the University I've been going to for the past two years. I have been through a lot in the last 2 years including having my own house and getting a job. But I have also had extreme hardships, including going through a horrendous relationship that left me almost feeling unlovable and forgotten, becoming homeless for a few weeks, and even going through some very rough semi relationships that ended up hurting me more than I ever thought I could. I have been single for over a year and have lived alone which has caused me even more issues. I work at a job that makes me almost feel meaningless as I am just another number and another person that fulfills their duties. For me the last few months and years have just been a struggle. But watching your videos have always been a little bit of a highlight and giving me a little bit of Hope, you always have things that make me laugh or things that catch my attention. Sitting here watching this video it warms my heart, as in the last few weeks and month I've been talkin to an individual who has started to show me kindness and compassion in ways that I have not had in a long time. Is that what this time in my life I don't believe in something called love, watching your video has giving me hope that if I keep working hard and push myself, there are things in life that I can reach, and it is worth going for. Your video you have just made has been an inspiration to me, and you truly have touched not only my heart but you have also helped me feel and know that I am not alone. You will always have a subscriber in me, and you will also have a person that will stand with you just like you were videos have stood with me.
    Thank you,
    K.

Thank you so much for the lovely comment! I have always found that the hurt in our lives doesn't have to be simply a wound, but instead can become a battle scar. Being able to use the hurt we feel, the problems we've gone through to help us sympathize with others is very beautiful and human thing. Sometimes I wish I never had to go through what I have, but I'm also thankful that in some way it helps me relate to people who really need someone to talk to when I'm in a better place. I can just lift my sleeve and show them, I've been there too. I don't quite know the entirety of your situation, but I will say you come across as a very strong person yourself. If I can do it, you can do it, and maybe one day you'll be able to show someone else that they can do it too. Chain reactions, positive feedback loops, and things of that sort.
I wish you luck with your time in university, I hope you find a lifetime of happiness with that special someone! There may be more battles in your future, I'm sure I'll have plenty too, but I hope in the end I've become a better person because of it. And I hope you do too!
      Take care!
