- WOW, this is one special radio ?
A Stromberg Carlson 70T11 Portable Transistor Radio to restore.
This is one of mine, straight to the Pool Room when finished.
Lets see Why !
I remember Stromberg Carlson from my grade school days in the 60's from the intercom/PA system. During class they broadcast the assassination report of JFK though the classroom speakers. I thought this was all they made. But an episode of the Twilight Zone (S1.E28 ∙ A Nice Place to Visit) featured a Stromberg Carlson stereo console and gave me a whole new impression of the brand. Further research on this revealed this was a very high end audiophile grade system with a Garrard turntable, Shure magnetic cartridge and separately enclosed 3 way speakers that could be removed from the cabinet for better separation. Tuner and amplifier were separates as with a component system. Large power and output transformers in the amplifier. I figured it for a 35 watt (true RMS) per channel output!!! A lot for the day. The tuner had an AM/FM simulcast mode for stereo before the days of FM Multiplex. Model number info: Stromberg-Carlson SP-965-C "Integrity Series" stereo system.
Hi Douglas, thank you so much for this info. I'm sure a lot of us relate to this.
Thanks for the comment & for watching
Cheers
Mr. Carlson's Lab commonly works on these Stromberg Carlson radios 📻. He replaces out-of-tolerance capacitors, changes burned out vacuum tubes, and aligns each radio 📻. Dial cords and dial lights are also in the equation, such as if the dial cord is broken, or the dial light bulb 💡 is burned out. Just came across your UA-cam channel and subscribed!! Your friend, Jeff!!
Thank you for subscribing. Yes, I too have followed Paul for many years. He's certainly got a great channel.
Hoping you find mine interesting as well although not quite Carlson standard 😃
I also have a pretty small recreation channel called travelseedo1
if your into that stuff. Cheers, Baz
Hi Baz don't rush your self. Keep it going and I know you will have this thing up and running again.
Hope so Mate !
Another great radio adventure!
Glad you enjoy it!
22:15 I'm glad you tried it, I was hoping you would. Cheers!
Darren, I was so curious as to weather it still had any ooomph left in it.
Just incredible that it did anything !
Cheers
@techobaz55 I'm just as surprised as you Baz, but so pleased it did work, can't wait to see if it powers the radio! I'm hoping! Cheers mate!
Hi Baz. Gee this one looks like a bit of a challenge! But I'm willing to bet you'll have it singing away in part 2. I reckon you'll probably get those solar cells sorted. It'll take a bit of work to get it looking like new again though, and good luck with that dial cord! 😂 Cheeers.
Don, the sun melted case is a challenge for sure, might not get it much better. The terrifiying part is that dial cord. Geez I hate them & this one is just waiting to test my ability to stay sane !
Cheers
Thanks
@ford1falcon Thank you so much for your Super.
This is the first one I've received, so exciting & well with running a channel every cent helps.
Muchly appreciated
Cheers
Bazz, It works out to be about £51/9 s (shillings) which today would be around $1800.
Out of my league mate!!!
Cheers Eric
Wow, next level. Way beyond me too !
The type face used is so familiar. The printing of the States makes that part Australian at least. Google says the average weekly wage in 1964 was 30 pounds. So thats a 2024 $2000 radio.
Certainly is an all Aussie dial. Wow, this was so expensive in its day for sure. Imagine paying that now for a radio !
Never have seen this model in the USA.
Looks like an Aussie only !
It is shaping up nice so far too !
Cheers
A little bit of Baz magic and this will sing again :)
Ya reckon Frank ?
Not going as planned so far 🥴
Re: 3D printer - I always tell my wife I've bought something expensive after I've bought it. Swiftly followed by "don't you remember me mentioning I was going to buy it?" shortly after her negative response. It doesn't work, but I've already bought it by then 😄 edit: That variable resistor is probably for setting the quiescent current or bias of that output pair of transistors.
I like your approach on the 3D printer for sure. Not sure I want to try it before Christmas though.
Early next year for sure !
I do cover that resistor in Part 2
Cheers
I think that one ran on too much sunlight 🙃
Yes, for sure !
