I'm retired from horticulture & my best tip is ALWAYS get to know your local agriculture extension office. Every state has one and they are run by a college. They offer free advice and MANY low cost classes . I took a potato growing refresher course. 5.00 & I got a sack of potato seed starts. The classes vary. From irrigation , canning , having your well water or soil tested , backyard chicken & beekeeping to name just a few. If you are in Florida contact your local IFAS office.

I took a plant propagation course at vocational night school. The teacher would not let us say dirt for soil. So everytime a you tuber uses dirt instead of soil, i think of him. He said dirt is negative and soil is positive.
I was always taught the soil is for planting plants into and dirt you swept off the floor!
We have never thought of it that way.

😂 I took a plant biology course in high school back in the 70's. My teacher insisted on the term soil, not dirt. It was the correct term and the only one she'd allow.😂

I live in a city but my neighbors and I have a small back yard. My neighbors tend a beautiful garden and I get to admire it. They have it set up where when one plant or flower ends its cycle, another varietal comes up. It is amazing what they did and how they knew how to design it so it would happen this way. Throughout the spring-fall you get to see a few really cool changes occur.

I make soup in my crockpot, and it only cost me approximately $.30 per serving. The crockpot will hold 10 servings at 2 cups per serving. The price will fluctuate bit depending on that weeks prices.

I plant lots of perrineals. Just like your bulbs, I buy from Lowe's, the discounted perineals. After year 2 many can be split and divided, to make even more plants. I trade with friends and neighbors. Developements are popping up all over in my area. The deer are hungry and did a good job of eating most of my flowers and shrubs. Now I include deer resistant plant in every bed. Zinnias, hellebore, rosemary, boxwood, lilly of the valley (the mother lotv came from my mother's garden 47 years ago)...
We have several acres and the bottom acre, along the creek, is planted with berry bushes, and an old apple tree left just for them♡🦌

i am doing a garden again. At 78 I cant do as much in the past but as live with daughter and her sons it will feed us all and they will help. I plan and start seeds inside. then the work is shared

2 years ago I tried a vegetable garden in pots. I did not get much. I took a class at a local botanical garden. It was my soil. I have purchased more pots, fresh soil and fertilizer. Hopefully it will work this time. I'm planting tomatoes, 2 type of cucumbers, 2 kinds of lettuce, Spinach, swiss chard, 2 kinds of squash and green beans. Hopefully something will grow. The time before I only had grape tomatoes the size of marbles.
Thanks for sharing. I too am not too successful with growing vegetables, but I keep trying. I am a little successful with strawberries. And homegrown ones tastes so much better! After I eat it, I stick the little edge in soil and it grows a little plant.

May I suggest trying a DIY Hydroponic system, that can be used and reused after cleaning at the end of each season. If one has Grow-lights, they can also be used in the garage. You can get Food Grade buckets from ice cream stores and other parts from a hardware store, or REstore, where they would be cheaper.
I am changing my menu because a local store has whole chickens for $1 per pond and ground beef for $3 per pound. I live in Pennsylvania and near to the Hanover food outlet. I get there about every 3 months and try to stock up on frozen and canned veggies!

Thanks for the little tutorial on storing the tulip bulbs. I've also been known to take some of the old tulip plants that are in the trash pile at the cemetery, to store for the summer and then plant in the fall. Sounds kind of crazy, but hate to see the bulbs go to waste. Good luck with planting flowers this summer! 🌷

I am living in a condo (in tropical HI) and do not have a garden. But shortly after we moved in about two years ago, I put two papaya trees (only little plants then, not even a foot high) in containers in front of our unit and we already have several fruits and more to come. We also had some last year. Funny that you mentioned wild flowers, because I also put some seeds underneath each papaya tree as well as in an extra pot on the balcony. They are already about 2-3 inches tall. Due to HOA rules I cannot have too many veggie or fruit plants on my lanai (balcony), but I do have several herbs, lettuce and one strawberry plant in addition to decorative green leaf plants.

We have bought our fruit trees and bushes this year and are getting them all planted in. It can take several years to get fruit, so we wanted to make sure to get them in as soon as we could. I am happy to say that we have asparagus this year already too. We planted that last year, knowing we would not get a harvest the first year or two, but already this year, we have very large stalks. I am really looking forward to getting a lot of perennials so that we don't have to work so hard on the garden each year. I was also able to find Egyptian Walking Onions last year and they are doing great this year too. If I do it right, I may not have to even plant any onions next year.

My hubs and I planted a bunch of tomatoes, lettuces and greens, squash, cucumbers, and zinnias to attract the pollinators! He makes the best marinara sauce, so I'm hoping to have enough tomatoes to can!

Great info. Leftovers made a delicious soup. I buy clearance bouquets at Fred Meyer (Kroger) almost every week. I create several vases of blooms. I’ve found that carnations, daisies and zinnias look good for weeks.

Hi! Could you make a video on 'how to save money DOING LAUNDRY'? Laundry detergent is not a food, but can take a big chunk of the grocery budget. New mothers especially might like this video. For instance, do you use cloth diapers or disposables? Do you machine dry your babies blankets and such or line dry? Do you use any soap or brands 'especially made for baby'?
Is it worth it to use laundry pods (children may eat them).

1. Is there a reason you don't write the year on the food you put into the freezer?
2. Do you do a cost per unit determination for the food/cleaning supplies you buy? For example, would it be cheaper to buy a larger size of dishwashing soap?

We don’t put the year on the food we freeze because there would be no way we would keep it for more than a year. We don’t have that big of a stockpile. I always check cost per unit.

My volunteer tomato plants are starting to flower and my longevity spinach is coming back nicely. I'm checking the peach tree twice a day and they are so close! Florida peaches are much smaller but delicious! The ponderosa lemon tree has blooms and some lemons starting to form. My sand dune sunflowers haven't volunteered in my yard but I found them behind my fence so I'm going to cut some to bring to work on Monday. Our county is giving away some fruit trees tomorrow but I don't think I can get home in time to take Dad to have lunch with my niece who's in town just for the weekend.

Please be aware that the outside of the mango (not the fruit itaelf) contains ushriol which is the same chemical in poison ivy. Some people are a little more allergic than other. I love mangos, but need to wear gloves and no longer chew off the fruit from the skin. If I do, I get "clown lips" as it causes my lips to get irritated and swell. Just an FYI 😄 Thank you for all you do to encourage us. :) Big win this Thursday -- I was so tired and had no energy to cook--Thinking of you, I grabbed a bag of frozen pork picatta I made months ago. I thawed it in cold water and put it in a pan. It was delicious a second time. We were soooo close to just ordering take out, but we didn't. We used up leftovers. With fresh noodles, my husband thought I cooked this entire meal again. He hates leftovers the next day, but doesn't mind a month or so later. ❤

I bought a geraniums plant end of season last year. Kept it in my bedroom window. In March I had a bloom on it and today a glorious red flower emerged to make me happy.
Psssst I added a tiny spiral copper wire which keeps bugs out of the soil. Also used urine diluted to water it.

We are planning a humongous garden this year, plus we've added 10 trees, 6 additional blueberry bushes, turmeric, and horseradish (I decided to grow that after Paul showed how to grow it!!). I am stoked!! I plan to preserve as much produce as possible.

We live in the southern Nevada, where it’s tough to keep plants alive during the intense summers. We’ve tried gardens in the past without much luck, but this year our kids are old enough to not get into things and with crazy raising prices, we just had to get this inflation garden going. Spring came early for us and now we have we have strawberries going and potential in our tomato plants. And fingers crossed we’ll get carrots this year!
Also we don’t have a yard, just a 24x12 ft cement patio. So we plant in pots and hang baskets. It’s possible to grow anywhere!
Yes! We plant most of our vegetable plants in containers! Works great!
Save veggie scraps,bones, from meat, chicken skin,make stock or bone broth from it.
Save fruit scraps for fruit smoothie,jams, preserves,jelly,fruit cake, muffins,etc.

As a South Floridian, our regular gardening season already ended, now we are enjoying the limited gardening summer season with only plants that we know can survive our summer heat, sun, humidity and pest pressure.
I'm xurrently growing Seminole pumpkins, Everglades tomatoes, Puerto Rican black beans, several herbs in the shade and of course all our tropical fruit trees are starting to set fruits (mangoes, avocados, cuban limes, etc)

I poke a small hole to release the air out of packaged food and then food saver them. That way the bag is still clean, I rinse, air dry and reuse for the same purpose again. Those food saver bags can get expensive :)

@@FrugalMoneySaver I haven't had a problem with it. I try to use half a bag at a time (the 12 ounce bags) and quickly reseal and put back in the freezer. Then the next time I still have a relatively large food saver bag leftover that I can just rinse out and dry...then I'll use it for something that I will throw it out after. Just trying to get several uses out of it!

I am a gardener who loves to grow fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Every year I learn new ways to do things more economically. The biggest saver for me is saving seeds. There are all kinds of videos on how to collect seeds. It has saved me so much money. I grow my own seedlings instead of buying plant starts. It’s so much cheaper! 😁👍

We are not able to grow a garden this year, but my husband is able to harvest small tree starts from our friend's land, and we've been planting them along the back of our property to create natural privacy between us and an industrial property.

Hi Emmy and Paul, We really do good in our garden with white patty squash, the kind that looks like flying saucers! They are easy and quick to grow and you can make them with any pasta gravy or bake them etc. They are wonderful!!!!!! We also have found giant chard to do well for us. They are good, and they are sturdy greens to grow. You can stir fry them, do soups etc.
Tonight we're doing a soup/light pasta gravy, I'm putting it up on my blog tomorrow! I have a blog up now from a month ago with a shot of four generations of our hands.
It's been crazy here, Emmy My mom has dementia, it's a trial breaks my heart. Our second born was in surgery today and back home but needing another surgery, hubs was in surgery last month.... Oh dear me. I don't know what I would do without the Lord. Thinking of you all, we're out here watching my Italian friends. ; ) Thanks Paul for showing us how to 'dead head' our flowers.

Our Library has started a seed library. You can check out seeds for free. At the end of the season you report back how things went. I've started tomatos, cucumbers, bush beans, snow peas, and New Zealand spinach. I can't plant until after the last frost which in the mountains of Arizona will be around June 1st or so.

I live in Florida so I grow lots in buckets. I just harvested seeds from Tatsoi greens. I have tomato starts, 4 different kinds, 5 different kinds of peppers,onions, potatoes, radishes planted. This weekend I have corn, beans, squash and cucumbers going in. I took today off to do most of it but after 9 inches of rain yesterday it is too wet right now. I buy heirloom seeds and save seeds year to year. I love my garden it is my happy place. It is also a working progress hoping each year gets better improving the soil. Best gardening tip, grow for your climate. Look into library resources for free seeds and resource books or groups to learn from.
This week there was a meat sale at our discount store. I bought 10 pounds of ground beef and have a huge pot of chili on the stove, more cooked ground beef cooked and ready for the freezer. That is the way I shop. Buy all on-sale and eat what we have.

This most recent video was so timely for me. My husband bought me a potted Easter bouquet and the tulips, mini daffodils and hyacinth are finally past their prime. I am going to deadhead the flowers and save the bulbs for fall. Thank you for showing us how to do that. We are growing roma tomatoes, zucchini, green beans and radishes in our garden this year. We also have a wildflower mix that we are going to try for the first time.

Great video-Thanks for the bulb tips. I LOVE to garden here in northern WI. I found that "Sun" is the key to success. I do lots of containers and move in and out of sunshine during the different times of year. One tip- I have been saving geraniums for years by removing plants the fall-place in cardboard boxes and store in the basement. Now in spring, take leaves off and place stems in containers of water and place in a sunny window. They will sprout and leaf out. I plant and love to watch them come to life. I label the boxes in the fall so I know the color of the flowers. Have a great week.

I looked up whether you should cut back the foliage. This is what I found. I'm sure it works either way!
Tulip foliage should not be removed until it has turned brown and died. The length of time it takes the foliage to die back depends on bulb type, weather, and other factors. The foliage of most tulips usually doesn’t die back until late June or early July. The foliage of tulips and other spring-flowering bulbs is performing a vital function. It is manufacturing food for the underground bulbs. Premature removal of the plant foliage reduces plant vigor and bulb size, resulting in fewer flowers next spring. After the foliage has turned brown, it can be safely cut off at ground level and discarded.
Yes, that is what Paul said. The foliage has to die on its own because it gives the bulb nutrients. The only thing he cut was to deadhead the flowers off.
Oh no. I cut my spent tulips plant I got and was planning on just planting the bulbs somewhere. Do u really have to dry them out? Cause in nature the bulbs just stay in the ground year round. I thought they just needed to be exposed to a cold period?

Have planted tulip bulbs but squirrels love to dig them up and rabbits chomp the leaves but the ones that survive look so pretty in the spring and are a welcome sign after a long ❄️ winter .

I grow my produce gardens every year.
I saved my junk mail all year, shred it, and kept it in a very large trash bag. Then, in early spring, I mix part by hand into my raised garden bed and till the rest into the vegetable garden soil. It is the most help my politicians have given me, as often their letters & flyers go into the soil instead of the landfill. Also, I save my egg shells all year, and every month or so, place them on cookie sheets and heat them in a 350 oven for 10 minutes to kill off any bacteria, then I grind them up and sprinkle them on the garden to add calcium to the soil.

We live in Texas and are facing our 3rd year of drought. So we have planted lettuce, onion and garlic. Not much. Our big project instead is building a greenhouse. Hopefully this fall we can plant a big winter garden.

We had some pulled pork my son-in-law gave us, some leftover pineapple and a cup of coconut cream left from another meal and found a great recipe on the internet. I had to make some homemade Chinese 5 spice (recipe from the internet also). It was absolutely delicious 😋

Tomatoes put out suckers that you can root and have new plants...just break them off and put into water - they will root in about a week. All the hairs on the stems of tomatoes will make roots - so to have a stronger plant lay the plant down horizontally and cover it with soil to have more roots pulling nutrients and moisture from the soil.

I'm planting veggies again this year. I'm pretty practical when it comes to my planting. I plant what we eat and I can't buy inexpensively at the many local farmstands in our area. So, paste tomatoes and a type of cherry tomato my husband loves to snack on, peppers, root veggies, green beans, and lots of lettuces. We have sugar snap peas in the ground right now as well as garlic. My space is limited so I grow what we can use and preserve. I plant squashes too.
As to flowers, I love zinnias and perennials of all types. Marigolds are a must as they take me back to my grandmom's house down the shore. Seeds are germinating and growing. It should be a good year.

I love treating myself to flowers as well. Lidl has beautiful bouquets in a great price range. To bulk up those bouquets, i clip some of my hosta leaves and add it to my bouquet. It looks so full and like something that i paid a lot for from a florist. Have a great weekend 🎉

Wow soup is something i decided to do for a meal this week while meal planning before I saw your video. I also have started a flower garden from seeds . I've never done that before. I've already got growth. I hope it works. I have done the bulb planting at other homes i have lived at. Thank you for the reminder. While in Amsterdam went to the flower mart. I found a delft blue shoe. In it was black and dark blue bulbs. A friend bought bags of tulips. She even had the bulbs marked ok for coming into the US. In Alanta they took them saying it wasn’t ok. They took all her bags. She was sad to see them go. When we got home we noticed we had bulbs in the toe of the shoe. My son gave them to her so her mom could look at them and enjoy them. Plan on a small scale. Pie pumpkins for sure, tomatoes spinach, green beans and carrots.

P.S. We are also doing Big Boy tomatoes and a couple of others...the big tomatoes are better to do than the little ones for us. Might as well pick big ones then little ones. lol San Marzano tomatoes would be very neat to grow and make extra special pasta gravies with those although I think the Americani ones should be fine! : ) amelia
