So what you're saying is: I need subtitles for this movie
Hope it's available online.
definitely! i was concentrating so hard and still missed a lot of the dialogue
Honestly yes, I was considering walking out half way through because, as much as the movie is a spectacle, If i can't understand what's going on my interest in the movie completely dissipates.
Sounds convoluted and tiresome but still willing to watch
I came out of the cinema thinking that I need to watch it again with subs
"no more trailers, i'm done" he says after having admitted to watching the new batman trailer over and over again
well the batman *is* only a quarter filmed,, so maybe it’s an exception
Who hasn't watched that trailer over and over?! Haha I watch batman trailer daily. I waited my whole life for this batman I'm 31
Last one!
@@thestarsturn the trailer is from a 25 minute portion of the movie, right?

I DON'T CARE ABOUT HER SON SO STOP TELLING ME HOW IMPORTANT HER SON IS!
I hope this is clear enough for you Mr. Nolan
What are you talking about?
Jesus metaphor innit
The son is definitely Neil
@@JackHowardDelete Channel.
The fact that you asked why the sailing scene was there and I went "oh yeah! The sailing scene was a thing!" is exactly why it didn't need to be in there.
I felt the sailing scene was there to show he was ready to take his own life and the wife cutting it was okay with the villain
^ Yeah, and also a chance to explain that he cannot be killed yet. It was also nice to get a chance to process what happened in the previous scenes.
"I liked it, I'd just like to see Nolan give it another go."
Couldn't agree more with that statement.
hair’s looking lovely
Can always count on you to pick up on the important stuff Reb Day
@@JackHoward the long hair does suit you tho jack.
I'm totally neutral in this hair debate.. but I have to agree. 👌
Jack after watching Spider-man: Homecoming: “I’m gonna stop watching trailers”
Jack after watching Tenet: “I’m gonna stop watching trailers”
Spider-Man was different cus I got to go on set for Far From Home
JackHoward this is why i shouldn’t argue without having all the facts
@@JackHowardDELETE NOW!
FINALLY someone says Tenet and not Tenent.
I haven't heard anyone say Tenent
@@deffonotluke chris stuckman
David Tenent wasn't in this movie.
@@dharshanramaprabhu8679 Thanks for the heads up. That would drive me batty to hear 'tenent' in a 'Tenet' review. I'll pass on his video. Thanks!
Speaking of David Tenant, the concept of this movie reminded me of a certain story arc in Doctor Who
Woh woh woh I’m sorry, just casually sitting behind Edgar Wright 😱
"no more trailers" seems to be an increasingly common sentiment nowadays. literally just watched a gaming vid where a commentator expressed this.
There's something to be said for watching a trailer *once* versus watching it several times. I watched it one time, said "Okay I'd like to see that," never saw it again. No in depth overview, no deep dive examination in an attempt to guess Nolan's "master plan," I couldn't even describe it to anyone today other than, "Some things happen in reverse, and look cool." You do a great service, suffering through over exposure for our benefit.
I would say it is his most complex. The narrative itself isn’t, but how the pieces come together when you start to question how did Neil (Robert Patterson) get to the time where he meets The Protagonist for the first time on screen?
Along with many others, you’ll need a timeline to figure out which version of a character is where and how they got from A-B.
Yes, I've been trying to justify Neal being reversed in the Opera and yet somehow being... you know who in the last "room", and since the film tells you that "the technology hasn't been invented yet" and then blithely shows you that it has, but is entirely controlled by Sator up until a point, you wonder just how Neil got forward in time in order to go and do that last thing. Turnstiles aren't even meant to exist then, right? Like cripers it makes zero sense. Not to mention the bad guy's motivation were cheesy as shit, none of the character had backstory or depth, and the film didn't even try to pass the Bechdel test. Sad days.
Yeah, after the reveal trailer (that really just has "inverted", the Mumbai tower f l i n g and stuff going backwards) I thought I'll wanna see this and avoided the other trailers. Which I'm grateful for.
I'm curious what you thought about sound mixing, because that felt very odd, and it felt like it was hiding dialogue almost deliberately so audiences would just shrug and go along with the story. Like "I didn't catch what he said, so I guess I'll just watch and see what happens"
Definitely agree with this, especially when they were wearing masks I found it quite difficult to hear what was being said
yep the score and sound effects really drowned out the dialogue. the whole time i was wishing for subtitles.
JackHoward: "Tenet is the first movie to be released in cinemas in 5 months."
New Mutants: **Cries silently**
Was anyone else having issues with the volume of the score behind the dialogue, jack says here that he missed some info and I had that issue a few times in the film where it was just too loud to understand the words characters were saying never mind what that actually meant
The audio mix was awful. I've seen this pop up over and over all over the Internet now
Yes. It's a Nolan issue. The sound mix is abysmal. The catamaran scene was the killer for me. Just terrible.
I've seen a lot of people saying this and I think it depends on the cinema. I didn't have any issues with the sound where I saw it. Nor did the people with whom I watched it
I thought it was just the cinema I watched it at, glad it wasn't just me.
The experience of watching this film was genuinely painful at times when I had to cover my ears to avoid how painfully loud it was.
And, I mean, if I literally have to shut off my sensory organs to enjoy a film, then I can’t say I completely enjoyed it.
I had trouble hearing most of the dialogue, so being able to actually process what is being said is pretty much impossible.
We don't care about the main character because he never really fails. We know he is going to pull through whatever troubles come his way. We care so little about him that they didn't even bother naming him.
My biggest downside of the film was that I couldn't hear about half the dialogue, so I was clueless to what was going on. Even the big finale sequence, I didn't quite know why it was happening. I never even caught the main character's name.
How much of that was down to poor acoustics in the individual cinema screen, and how much is down to the mixing, I'm not entirely sure. I'll definitely watch it again at some point, albeit with the subtitles on.
The main character is called the protagonist we never hear his actual name, but yea the film is insanely loud at points
Thanks, Nolan didn't use Hans Zimmer.
im pretty sure if everyone complains about the sound mixing its not your cinema...
Agreed.
Dialogue was fast, garbled, and just plain ol' mumbled. Especially, with the accents and trying to explain a new concept, dialogue needs to be clear.
Please do a spoiler discussion because I think there's a lot to chew on, particularly the implications of the ending.
And I'd say I had a similar reaction to you, I think where Inception has the character arc of Cobb dealing with his grief and to an extent Fisher's emotional dynamic with his late father, Tenet sort of doesn't. It attempts to for sure, and I won't get into specifics, but it does not land the same way. I do think though that this is the best action Nolan has directed, that's for sure. The fight choreography, in particular, is fantastic, as is Ludwig's score that really never lets up.
I'd definitely love if Nolan did a sequel because the hints at the wider world of the film are quite interesting.
I've heard that Christopher Nolan prefers to do more practical things over green-screened stuff and I thought, "huh cool", then I heard that he ....crashed an actual plane in a flight terminal and I was like...."Ohhhhhh so he doesn't use special effects...at all" (also I wish I could've seen the looks on the faces of the producers when that idea was brought up heh)
Really enjoyed this spoiler free review and would very much like to see another video about Tenet:)
Can't wait to watch the film
Don’t want to be a dick, but I think you meant visual effects not special effects. (Side note, I definitely wanted to be a dick about this, that’s why I brought it up)
@@isaacmumby3624 yes that's what I meant :)
As for wanting to be a dick.. you do you man 😌

Hehe nice
I was thinking of seeing this to support a local community cinema that needs business...... this video was a godsend, thank you!
Go ahead and support them pls. They need you.
See it with subtitles if possible!
I'd love to see a spoiler review/discussion for this film. There's so much to talk about regarding the film that a spoiler free video can't do it justice
If you're lucky, Wright went home and told his family "Hey, I sat in front of that Dean Howard guy from the Tim H channel"
Fingers crossed!
yes please for the spoiler included discussion 👏🏻 i watched it yesterday and would love to hear your thoughts on the more specifics of the film!
Yesss please do a more in-depth discussion! I couldn't wait to hear your thoughts after having seen it, you always have such great takes on Nolan and cinema in general!
Ever since Avengers civil war I've actively done my best to avoid trailers for movies I am excited for. I did the exact same for TENET and when I saw it I was absolutely blown away by all the spectacle because I hadn't seen it before. My jaw was literally gaping in the second car chase.
I would absolutely watch the sequel...esp one from Rob Pattinsons pov... also great review! Would love a detailed vid in the future!
Having seen it, I'd really love a more in-depth review (with spoilers) - but of course, understand you wanting to wait a while. Loved this review as well though! Agree with all your sentiments (nice to have someone to agree with lol).
Yes! it’s here I’m here, I’ve watched already and now I’m watching backwards to watch again.
Yes part two please!!! (For the Film and your review!)
Agreed, some of it was spectacle for spectacles sake.... and the dialogue (particularly when masked) was hard to catch. But it entertained me far more than a Bond film for sure, and I enjoyed it. :)
Was waiting for this! Totally agree about the part where you said you missed a piece of dialogue and didn't really know what was happening for the next ten minutes - that happened to me way too many times for my liking. Often, I found that the music covered up the dialogue so I had to really strain to hear, but maybe that was just my screening (or my hearing) . I think I will watch it a second time, because I did enjoy myself and I want to understand it better
Ahhhh I love your film reviews so so much !! Its just so lovely seeing someone so passionate about something, even when i haven't watched/don't intend to watch the film (though sometimes you do persuade me to). I know from your Instagram stories that u were v hyped to see tenet so I hope it did still fulfil your expectations even if it didn't completely and utterly blow you away :)
I could listen to you talk about film for hours! I feel like I learn so much just from hearing your thoughts.
I thought of the Protagonists' character as very much like Clint Eastwood's Man with no name. He comes into the picture where there's a problem and it's the character's around him that get more backstory as it's how he sees them. Elizabeth Debecki's character reminded me of Lee Van Cleef's colonel in For a Few Dollars more.
I couldn't hear a word of dialogue in that sailing scene 🙃 It’s nice to have a bit of validation. I've seen the film twice and I really want to enjoy it but the more I think about it, the more frustrated with the story I get. It's a very cool film but it didn't make me care about anyone. Spoiler discussion and nit pick please!
i have been SO excited for this review! so interesting!
Spoiler:
Can't believe your prediction was right tho. Knew once the hallway scene happened that it was him fighting himself
damn I thought this was gonna be a joke and now I'm actually spoiled
I was thinking the same thing
@@kittybunny231 He said it was a spoiler.
@@kittybunny231 not worth the risk
See I didn’t see it coming but I’m unsure as to why he would try and shoot himself, since it was the inverted version of himself who shot the gun. Did he purposely miss? Because that seems like a huge risk
Agree with you 100%. I felt a bit lost in the first half, but it wasn’t that I couldn’t grasp the plot, I couldn’t quite grasp the characters and their relationships to each other
Waited until after I saw the movie to watch ur review... definitely make a breakdown incl spoilers in future!! Would love to watch
I knew it. You called it! I was completely in agreement with your prediction video.
I can't watch it yet though, which is very sad 😔
I’ve been waiting for this for so long
Watched it last night xx It was fine, can’t wait to go back to the cinema again though!
Very fitting shirt choice
Love your insight! Please do have a spoiler discussion about the movie, would love to hear what more you have to say!
Yes, no more trailers, good choice, I some times find myself waiting for moments or even locations from the trailer to show up :)
I would love to hear more of a deep dive into the story and the characters from your point of view :D
I love that you say "it didn't ask" to be the saviour of cinema and yet if you asked Chris Nolan aka Mr This WILL Be The First Film Released In Cinemas Screw Drive-Ins he'd probably shrug and say "meh, it was nothing"
Looking forward to watching this one
this summed it up perfectly for me. so often i knew (or half knew) what the grander stakes were but i just didn't care enough about the characters. i never got behind john david washington and elizabeth debicki. so often i found myself thinking 'i don't know what's going on' and 'i'm so confused' and having to remind myself to just enjoy the spectacle, but as you said, if the spectacle has no weight to it, then it's not going to be as experiential. i almost felt guilty for not coming out of the cinema raving about it cause it's the-new-chris-nolan-film™ but i was a little disappointed. definitely feel like i need to see it again to appreciate it more. absolutely loved robert pattinson's character though -- oddly i trusted him the most the whole way through, and loved the mischievous mystery he had about him.
Caitlin Andrews i know what you mean! and agree that it was too loud to the point where i couldn’t hear the dialogue at times (which didn’t help the general confusion). completely agree about the female characters - a consistent flaw in nolan’s movies. debicki was supposed to be this complex, contradictory female character but in the end it all boiled down to the fact that she was a mother. ostensibly she did everything for her son but it seemed to me she did a lot for herself and her own freedom - not a problem, an interesting character trait if she’s trying to justify her actions by her love for her son, but this idea is not explored enough for me to be sure it’s deliberate. not sure where i stand on that and would like to see it again to watch that dichotomy more closely, but i still think nolan needs to expand his understanding of female characters and what they can achieve in film
Caitlin Andrews yes! it feels like character development was sacrificed for action/exposition (that still did not add clarity).
not too much at all, it’s a joy to ramble about movies with other people who care :) x
No Spoilers comment: I have two or three things i didnt like but loved it overall. I agree on pacing, i think the first 20 minutes or so felt a bit all over the place, and this first opening half hour was probably hardest to make sense of some plot points. Audio wise, not sure if it was my cinema but it was overwhelmingly loud to the point I couldnt understand any dialogue in the Opera House at the start whilst characters had masks on. Loved the fact the action set pieces were done for real, and the overall concept was brilliant. Happy with how it ended but on reflection I do agree with your point about the film feeling like it was in a rush. Still a long film though but very enjoyable.
What an interesting review, thank you!
Hmm. Interesting review. I think i'll go see it.
Funny thing.. I was shown an ad for Tenet immediately following your video.
Okay I rewatched your video after finally seing the movie yesterday night and wow yes I agree with you on everything.
The action sequences were AMAZING and definitely worth waiting going to the cinema for, but other than that I agree on the lack of emotional connection with the story and the characters. Also, my brain kinda left the chat during the double room scene so after that I wasn't really following the story lol I feel like I should re-watch it to understand it a little bit better but at the same time I kinda don't want to?? idk
And yes please I'd love a spoiler discussion from you!!
good review man
You look so handsome!! Love the hair :) and a great video as always
spoilers kinda
can someone explain what that whole first 10 minutes was about cause i couldn’t make out a lot of dialogue
I had to lol at this comment because I felt exactly the same
SPOILERS
there was a mission??? to save a guy from being killed??? but we never know who the guy is or who the protagonist works for.
and then a bomb explodes and the protagonist almost dies,,,, i think
they never really explain it lmao but yeah that's kind of it tbh
celia they said it was test to see who was capable to take part in all of this but it turns out that him from the future set it all up as a excuse to have his younger self fight since he was too old
I'd really like a miniseries (maybe 3 or 4 episodes) of a couple of characters within this universe having their own adventures and using the inversion technique but with john david washington's character as the mastermind orchestrating it all
Totally agree with this
"It's a time-traveling James Bond" F*cking nailed it.
I think this could work well as a TV series combined with a videogame as a combined product like Qauntum Break. Your main protagonist has to stop the antagonist through uses of time travel with different gameplay mechanics, the antagonist has to make the choices which affect the episodes.
Please do a film review Jack! Always love to hear your opinion on Nolan’s latest work
YES YES YES. Have been eagerly waiting for this video. I agree with pretty much everything you said
Never Clicked into a Video so quickly. I've been refreshing my UA-cam everytime to hear Jacks opinion.
Great video! Video suggestion? : Top Korean films! There are some goodies in there and with Parasite winning Best Picture, this would be a great way to keep those introduced to foreign film to stay with foreign film!
Pretty much the same thoughts here. My biggest criticism wasn't even with the film per se, more the cinema I watched it in. Incredibly bass-boosted and the music/SFX often trumped the dialogue which made understanding what they were saying especially difficult when they were wearing masks or talking through a walkie-talkie (sailing scene, opera scene, etc.).
I had the exact same problem and I’ve seen a bunch of other people with the same complaint. By the time the film ended I decided I liked it, but for a lot of the movie I found it really hard to follow because I couldn’t hear the dialogue. I still have no clue what that opera scene was about
Great review by the way Jack, would actually love a TV Series based in this Universe to be fair, I think the format would work well! (Netflix where you at?)
HOW HOW HOW, have I not found your channel before Jack?
Not only do I agree with your review down to a tee, but the way in which you give it is just funnier and more entertaining than other critics.
I said similar things in my first review and have now actually done a SECOND one just to cover my thoughts on the second viewing. Personally I thought it was a very very different experience the second time around, because of precisely the thing you mentioned at the beginning about it having so much pressure on it. It was so much pressure that even we couldn't fully enjoy it, because we felt that pressure too.
(Also not to brag but I saw Interstellar TWICE on the biggest IMAX in the WORLD... I'm pretty sure the screen is bigger than the UK... that's a standard backyard here in Australia. ;-) / cheers man, loved this video!
100% agree with all your points here and really like the way you form and present your opinions, earned a sub from me!
would love a spoiler discussion!!
Completely with you about not watching trailers!
I have big hopes for seeing this.

so excited
I know the show is kinda old now but I'd love to hear your opinion on the show fleabag (if you haven't seen it please watch it because It has been crafted so carefully and yet it's so chaotic and I love it)
I like this review very much. I agree with everything you said. Still enjoyed it A LOT! Have you reviewed Netflix’s The King? (I will look on your channel, no worries).
yeah, for the past few years now ive stopped watching trailers for movies that im really excited to see, or i watch it once to see if i want to be excited for it.
Would love to see a spoiler version, just saw it this evening in IMAX and really enjoyed seeing it. It got me excited about storytelling again having spent so long not being able to go to the theatre or cinema.
Although one thing that bothered me is the clarity of dialogue. I don’t know if it was the bass heavy music or poor sound balancing or even if it was on purpose but I would say that I lost about 10-20% of the lines.
I could get through this and didn’t mind working out as I went along but some of the people I went to see it with felt that it ruined it.
Thoughts?
I can confirm I feel the same way even though I did not watch the trailer in the past few months..
I’m looking forward to watching it in 70mm tonight...
The hype for this film is unreal, I’m sure it’s great fun regardless.
I'm gonna watch Tenet tomorrow and was planning on watching the trailer right after this video. I'm not going to now.
I totally agree with your point about stop watching trailers, but the problem that I find with some trailers there's stuff that's made just for the trailers and not used in the film.
For example: in a Rogue One trailer there's a shot of Jyn Erso on the platform going to the switch when a tie fighter hovers in front of her. That shot is not in the film, which would've been cool if it was and the tie fighter was shot by a passing resistance ship.
There's also the bar scene from the Suicide Squad trailers, I know it's a bad film already, but when I went to see it in the cinema and was waiting to see that scene play out on the big screen only to see that it had been cut brought me right out of the experience.
Pretty much spot on I think. Whilst I think it was very complex I think if you do miss one line through slightly difficult to hear audio it can make it very difficult to follow, especially in the first half. It does pay off at the end but it felt slightly rushed and lacked something that inception and interstellar have where it doesn't quite bring it to a round finish
The most memorable part of my TENET screening? The DUNE trailer!
I nearly cried
You and Mark Kermode need to do a ranking of Taratinto works
Savoir of cinemas, that's deep
Just liked and subscribed your video sir..
I shut my eyes and ears for every trailer for a movie that I think I'd like so no surprises will be ruined
I have literally never been this early for a video. Also very excited for this review!
Same lol
What if you're only allowed to watch trailers once and if you suspected a scene in it is going to blow you away you have to pause and not finish the trailer? Sometimes trailers do give too much away, even if it's not the whole plot, but I remember seeing the trailer for Fury Road in the cinema and I was thrilled! I couldn't tell what it was going to be about and I carried that suspense until the film was released and I went to watch it.
do you reckon it'll get best picture nom still?
Really liked the movie. Really liked the review. Just saw it i need to sit on it but hearing you talk about it its delightful. Hope you can go deeper into it.
I'd like to hear your review of Nolan's "The Prestige"
