    i also think that the act of rewatching Tenet is like a subtle interactive / participatory experience within the context of time inversion. watching it the second time made me feel like i went through the time inversion machine as well, now armed with new knowledge... understanding that what has happened, happened. that's just me, maybe :) i just liked the movie

    Really nice explanation, the diagrams are very helpful. But I just realized something I haven't seen addressed yet, which is a consequence of this time inversion physic model: if we aren't inverted we can't kill anyone inverted!
    The reason is that the inverted person must always exist up to the point they reversed their time. So anyone you see moving in reverse cannot die! By the same logic, if you see the reversed person heading to a sliding door, you also can't kill the non-reversed similar person that's simultaneously heading to the other sliding door.
    The only thing that can happen (as showed in the film) is to unkill an inverted person - ie: you see a dead body on the ground, he rises as you shoot a bullet that goes through him, and then he carries on his inverted live. Once he raises back to life, he can't be killed, it doesn't matter how hard you try. Obviously, the reverse also happens - an inverted person can never kill a non inverted person, in their perspective they can only unkill them.
    The irony here is, in a fight between you and an inverted person, even though you know you can't kill the other person, you can be killed! This is because each person sees their own time going forward (and you may die in your future) but you see the other person's time going backwards (and it's impossible for them to die at a time previous than now).
    So while you're fighting, you know you may die, and you know you can't kill the other guy. Unless the other guy is you, and you haven't experienced the other side of the fight yet - in that case you know you can't die, because you still have to fight on the other side. Really weird logic that comes out of this!

    • @davidkelly0
      @davidkelly0 3 роки тому +19

      I had to read that about three times before it clicked in my head, but you're absolutely right. I'd never thought about that before.

      Neil died when he was inverted so this reasoning is flawed. I know what you mean, launching a lethal attack on an inverted person would just heal them for your perspective but that doesn’t mean they’re actually okay.

    • @ruimeireles1695
      @ruimeireles1695 3 роки тому +20

      @Wesley The man that killed Neal wasn't fighting Neal. In his perspective he shot a bullet, but that bullet "unkilled" the dead body that was lying on the ground. Had he started fighting Neal after Neal got up, he would be unable to kill him. This logic isn't flawed, it is a direct consequence of the way time inversion works.

    • @colinmcmahon3051
      @colinmcmahon3051 3 роки тому +6

      but remember that the "inverted" entropy/events are flowing against the more powerful current of entropy, so they get overpowered by that stronger flow and essentially "corrected" in the past. that's why inverted bullet holes, or an inverted injury, seem to manifest out of nowhere right before they are "undone". but also remember that when you invert, you are still traveling into "your" future. its all relative. Neal died while inverted, but he is still dead, because from his perspective he is still traveling to his "relative" future.

    Best explanation I have seen! On a side note, it seems to me that time inversion is best for short hops or for a younger traveler. The *speed* of time never changes, either forwards or backwards. So if you spend DECADES formulating a great friendship, you'll have to spend DECADES getting back to its point of origin. That's years of avoiding inverted air and living in containers. You would have to re-invert to resupply, but that only makes the journey even longer.

    • @Gadget-Walkmen
      @Gadget-Walkmen 3 роки тому +1

      Thank goodness that's not what actually happens in the film because They only use the time inversion machine for short distances for the missions, trying to re-supply all those resources that you make journey unbearable to do but thank goodness none of the characters in the film have to do that.

    FINALLY, someone with a really good way of breaking it down. You are the only one giving the explanation I have seen that has made the clear distinction that when inverted you are not getting younger [which for some reason other people think]. It is an inversion of perspective and your "forward arrow" when contrasted to the rest of the world. Thank you so much for this. I am gonna be using this to help explain it to friends in the future.

    Wow. This helped me unlock a key to the principle of Tenet: AT ANY ONE TIME, THERE IS ONLY ONE COPY OF YOU AND YOUR INVERTED DOUBLE.
    Your timeline starts when you are born until you walk through an inversion machine. Simultaneously, your double's timeline starts by walking backwards out of the machine and living your whole life backwards upto the day you are born.
    When you walk out the other end of an inversion machine, to anyone that watched you, you basically entered and vanished. They have no sight of the inverted world. To them, the world is going on without you. In reality, you did not vanish, you walked out the other end and are now existing in a world that is moving backwards towards the moment you were born. In this world, you live alongside your inverted double who has no choice but to re-live your whole life backwards from the date you entered the machine, to the moment of your birth. You on the other hand, can affect things in the inverted world.
    You can for instance lie low in the inverted world long enough to watch it move backwards to a point when you want to change something e.g. stop a bomb from going off. You can for instance wait to the time ten days before the bomb went off to then walk through an inversion machine in the inverted world. When you walk out the other end, the world starts moving forward again from that point. You can use your knowledge of all the events that will happen up until the bomb detonates, to change those events so the bomb never goes off. You cannot tell these events to others as you may risk them acting differently to change these events, which may mean the bomb still goes off, just through different series of events. Your double is no longer visible to you in forward moving time but infact exists and simultaneously walked backward out of the second machine. He will also simultaneously relive your life walks backwards including walking back through the first inversion machine, all the way to the day you were born.
    Hope this helps those that are still confused 🙃

If you know about a bomb going off when you are non inverted and want to stop it by going inverted for a few days, go uninverted again days before the bomb to stop it or change how it happens, it will still happen the way it allways happend, it going off while you do all these things trying to stop it. What happend, happens.

      There is no free will in this movie (whether that applies to in real life is another debate). Before one gets inverted, the actions of your old (regular time) self can be manipulated by your future inverted self (such as being set up to meet certain people). However once you get to be inverted, you realize that the only reason why you exist in the inverted world is because of the sequence of events that happened pre-inversion, which means your future self must set up your old self in order for your current (inverted) self to exist. So while you are preinverted, your old regular time self has the illusion of free will, but you can realize that you need to do specific tasks in order to put your old self in the correct trajectory that makes your current self possible.
      In other words, cause and effect still holds true since the cause happens (while inverted) before the effect was felt (non-inverted) on the time line. However the tricky bit is that the cause only takes place because the effect was felt, so you need to make sure the cause happens so your old self feels the effect. The reasoning is circular, but the chronology and application works out

    i was planning to watch the movie tomorrow. now, after watching this frigging awesome explanation, i wont be able to sleep. shit dude!
    before i watch it ill make some speculations and come back tomorrow to see if they match.
    1) the friend knew about his own death from the very beginning( from the first trip since they occur in parallel). so he must be doing or setting up the stage for something important.
    2) towards the middle of his life, the friend has undergone time inversion several times, that too to relive a certain period many times( sometimes as inverted-self and sometimes as non-inverted self) so the important thing/incident must have occurred during that time.
    3)the friend's disappearance at the end of his life was also presumably preplanned so that his inverted self can go into past and meet the man( first meeting according to the man). this presumably indicates that his ultimate death in the arms of the man is an important cue to trigger future events.
    now lets wait till tomorrow. maybe I again overthinked the thing out of sheer excitement. Good lord! Gnar merechhe bara!

    Great explanation. One of the questions that has stayed with me is how does Sator talk to the Protagonist in reverse? Because time is moving in reverse direction to each other.
    If Sator asks a question at 8:00 and ends the question at 8:02, in the Protagonist world, the time has moved from 8:02 to 8:00. And let us say when protagonist answers the question, it will be 8:03 from Sator's perspective. But in Protagonst perspective, it is 7:59. That means he answered the question first and heard the question later???

    • @phdeng3827
      @phdeng3827  3 роки тому

      No exactly. For the answerer, he will always hear question first, then answer. But for the questioner, he will hear the answer first then ask the question. Let's use and only use the world's time as reference. You are inverted, I am not. At 8:00, I asked a question. Assuming recording and playing reverse takes no time, or if I wrote down my question on a piece of paper, you will hear/see my question at 8:00. You answer the question at 7:59 (because you are inverted). And I will have your answer at the same time (7:59). For me (not inverted), answers (7:59) came before question (8:00). For you (inverted), questions (8:00) came before answers (7:59).

    I am now beginning to understand Tenet, the only thing that makes me question the whole time Inversion thing is this situation that I have developed in my mind :-
    So, imagine you are standing in an open field and on the ground, there is a soccer ball. The soccer ball is inverted (flowing backwards in time).
    Now I have two options :-
    1) I can pick up the soccer ball with my hands by grabbing it.
    2) I can pull it towards me from far away because from the soccer ball's perspective, I would be throwing it.
    The thing that confuses me is that if I make the decision to catch it, I have the choice of catching it really hard or really slow.
    But we are imagining the situation where the soccer ball is kept on the ground near us.
    Wouldn't catching the ball really hard change its position and then come to my hand?
    Because from the ball's perspective we would be throwing it really hard, hence it would go far off in the distance.
    Sorry for this long question and sorry if its confusing, I hope you get what I'm trying to say.

      It is really messy when it comes to the interaction between inverted and uninverted objects. A lot still need to be discussed.

    • @dontworryaboutit3840
      @dontworryaboutit3840 3 роки тому

      You wouldn't catch the ball really hard, you'd catch it like how you threw it. There was no force acting upon you when you threw it, so it'd be the same as when it comes back to you. It's like rewinding a video, how you threw it will be played in reverse and that will be how you catch it.

    This is a good start, but it doesn't explain how inverted objects and people interact with the regular world. What happens if you get shot by an inverted bullet or are shot while you are inverted? Those are the really complicated things.

      @johnnymittle 3 роки тому

      @@radioheadnyc I should have added that it depends on what the red person saw before the gun was held up.
      If there's no glass and Blue you even made it to the Blue area then he cannot shoot Red you. Because Blue you is future Red you and has not been shot.
      Red you could shoot Blue you and that's fine.
      For the 1000 men if they make it to the Blue area (you will see this through the glass) without being stabbed there is nothing you could possibly do to stab them on the Red side.

    • @alexanderwill2847

      I think the answer is yes. For example, the guy that sacrificed himself in the cave at the end - I think the molecules that made up his body were around since the beginning of the universe, until his body "undecomposed". Other things really don't hold up if you think about them (like why would anyone design buildings with pre-made bullet holes?), but it's a fun idea.
