WALKS IN DORSET at EVERSHOT & MELBURY OSMOND (TWO OF THE PRETTIEST VILLAGES IN DORSET) (4K)

  • In this episode of my series “Walks in Dorset”, I take a 6.5 mile circular walk from the village of Evershot which is located 13 miles West of Dorchester. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
    I parked my car in Evershot and started my walk at the Western end of the village at St John's Well which is considered to be the source of the River Frome.
    After visiting the Church at Evershot, I wandered down through the main street in the village, past the Summer Lodge Country House Hotel & the Village Hall.
    At the Eastern end of the village, near an ancient seat made of three standing stones on a small triangle of grass, I joined the Hardy Way through Melbury Park.
    The footpath took me Northwards through the park & past the magnificent Melbury House and on to the delightful village of Melbury Osmond.
    Sir Frederick Treves, in his 1906 book “Highways & Byways in Dorset” described the village as “the most charming village in these Western backwoods”. After visiting the church, I headed Westwards and on to Lewcombe.
    At this point, I headed South, joining a section of the Macmillan Way, past Girt Farm and back to Evershot.
    This walk has to be one of the prettiest that I have experienced in my series of “Dorset walks” so far!

    What a beautiful place Dave. The views are so pretty and and the church looked so magnificent . These churches you visit are so interesting and their history. The village is so pretty with its cottages which are so quaint and I can hear the birds which really brings to mind spring. So gorgeous Dave. Hugs to Logan. Thanks so much for taking us along☀️

    Not only a joy to follow your walks but an education. I really appreciate that you have done some research into the places, churches that you visit and who doesn't love a walk with a dog! Lovely Logan. I love the Highways and Byways books. I use extensively the volumes covering Surrey and Sussex! Robert Fripp is someone I have tremendous admiration for. Always a real pleasure to see Dorset through your eyes, Dave, thank you.

      Thank you Andrew. The notes of these Dorset villages by Sir Frederick Treves is always an interesting read although he is never afraid to give his honest opinion (good or bad!).

    Dave, another pleasant romp with you in Dorset. I'm presently at my Montana cabin surrounded by an eruption of new life in the springtime Rockies. We still have grizzly bears, wolves, pronghorn, bison, and similar species long departed from the UK. There is an element of risk when traveling in the forests. And an element of excitement knowing one might encounter a creature that would eat you! For all its splendor, there is a little something missing--history. Your walks and commentary complement my experience out west. Thanks!

    We’ve walked a similar walk twice, once last autumn and again probably the week after you and Logan, although we took a slightly different route as we took the path to the right as you first head from Evershot towards Melbury Sampford, passing a boating lake. Beautiful walk and lovely to back agin. Thanks again Dave and Logan 🥰

    So enjoyable to see again an area I knew so well back in the day, thank you both. I might be biased as a West Country lover, but Dorset seems to change more slowly than other parts of the country. Long may it continue. Got to say Logan looked crestfallen at the lack of an open pub on that walk, you’ll have to make up for that next time!

    The timeless treasure of Melbury Osmond and a plethora of marvellous meadows - what a beautiful walk!! Worth the effort of tackling that ravine, though Logan seemed to emerge unscathed!! Does Logan mind being on the lead for long stretches? He seems very good about it.

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  2 місяці тому +2

      Logan is great on or off lead. The lead I use is fairly long so it gives him a bit of freedom but basically, as long as it is safe, he is usually off lead most of the time - often not straying too far from me.

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  2 місяці тому +1

      He seems to chop and change. Sometimes he prefers the grass, sometimes he prefers the road. A lot depends on the type of grass I think - some types of grass are "softer" than others!

    Very nice as always Dave. I've been going to Frome shopping every month for quite a long time now, and I can assure you that it is pronounced as Froome. Every local i've spoken to says it that way, as do my local BBC Points West on tv, and even in many teaching videos about the quirks of the English language, where Frome comes up a lot! Robert Fripp and Toyah now live in a haunted old manor house in Pershore, Worcestershire, on the edge of the Cotswolds, and their garden slopes down to the River Avon, lucky them. 😊

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  2 місяці тому +1

      Thank you. I think that is two houses now that I have included in films that were once lived in by Toyah! The Old Manor House at Evershot & Reddish House at Broad Chalke.

      @@DaveFord They both seem to move around quite a bit those 2, and always end up living in nice places. The actress Rula Lenska visited their current home and she saw dead children! It sure is haunted! When I was younger growing up living behind Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire, they both lived in a house in Hendon, North London, a few miles from me. There were such beautiful villages you visited in this video, really stunning! Thanks for such a beautiful journey Dave, and shame the pub was not open too! How we suffer for our art! Have a nice weekend! 😊
