  • These brilliant birds have flown all the way from Iceland to spend the winter in the UK. Find out how to tell them apart from the mute swans we see all year round, and Bewick's swans, which also come here for winter.
With the RSPB's Luke Phillips and Ami Kirkbright.

Whooper swans are my favourite bird- I volunteer at Loch Leven and seeing them in large numbers in the winter is such a treat! Ami did a brilliant job chatting about them!

Great to hear Molly and we agree that Ami did a brilliant job of telling us all about these great birds.

We have hundreds of Whooper swans in the fields along the River Lark in Cambridgeshire, out on the Fens..You can hear them from quite far away, especially at dusk.

On my daily walk I repeatedly see approximately fifty swans sitting in an old potatoe field at the Milton / Coaltown of Balgonie in Fife.

Don’t forget there is a very small population of nesting/breeding Whooper Swans of around 22 pairs in the UK and just in Northern Scotland. Mainly an Autumn/Winter visitor in there thousands in the UK, but does have a small Spring /Summer population of around 22 pairs every year in Northern Scotland and I saw a pair of nesting Whooper Swans in Northern Scotland in 2019..

Hi Ian. Yes indeed and it's really exciting have these great birds nesting in the UK. There were quite a few whooper facts that didn't make the final edit but we hope it helps boost this amazing birds profile. Scope for another future video about whooper swans for sure and thanks for getting in touch.

Just to say,Loch Leven RSPB reserve is on the east side of Scotland, not in the west!(The other Loch Leven is near Glencoe!)

I always hear small groups of these noisy swans flying here on the North East Wales/North Shropshire border... Would they be lost on their way to Scotland? Or do they winter in lots of UK locations? 🙂
