- Der Senkrechtstarter 1969 - die D0-31 E-3 als Lufttransporter. Sie haben ihr Publikum immer fasziniert: senkrecht startende Flugzeuge. Auch deutsche Erfinder haben sich in den 60-ziger Jahren mit der Entwicklung eines solchen Flugzeuges beschäftigt. Auch für das Militär eine damals interessante Entwicklung.

I can't believe it development stopped, what an airplane. Just love it.
It had no electronic stabilization and no fly by wire. It was a full classical stable jet design. The pilots had a lot of trouble to hold it on air. With the current state of the art jet technology it would be a formidable jet.

The entire World were their allies technically, because Communist East Germany/GDR were allied with the East (Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia/The Balkans, USSR, North Vietnam, China, North Korea) and Democratic West Germany/FRG was allied with the West (USA, UK, France, Spain, Portugal etc.). Too expensive and too little loading capacity. ;)
They stopped it because it had a really limited use. It had low payload, low range and excessvie maintenance cost. In a way it served it's purpose. It proved that the concept of VTOL aircraft with multiple liftengines and multiple cruise engines is entirely impractical.
Great example of VTOL fever of 60's. Applause to German engineers and pilots! Who knows; if not a sudden increase of jet fuel price in mid 70's... these birds could become a mainstay type on commuter intercity lines.
Ja hab ich mir damals auch im deutschen Museum angeschaut, großartiges Flugzeug.
Mit Hilfe unsere britischen Freunde hatte man dafür auch die notwendigen Triebwerke.

I saw this experimental aircraft outside the entrance to the Deutsches Museum in Munchen ( Munich ) when i visited
in the early 80's. I was stationed in West Germany when I was in the US Army then.
It can now be visited at the Dornier Museum Friedrichshafen (Bodensee)
@@compfox There are actually still 2 of these in existence. One in the Dornier museum in Friedrichshafen. And one in the Aircraft part of the Deutsche Museum outside of Munich.

This one in the video is the one standing in die Flugwerft Schleißheim (Part of the Deutsches Museum), you can see it by the number on the back, wich is both D-9531
It still stands there.
The best is, the complete program was done without any loss or crash! ALL three prototypes are still there in Museums around germany here. They stopped the program before the normal models were built because Bundeswehr decided not to buy any of them. After that decision the model was overseas in USA making final test flights at NASA in 1970. Neil Armstrong (yes the Moonguy) flew it too! And he said it was a convincingly positive aircraft…. this was the end of the development.

Die deutsche Industrie durfte dieses Flugzeug nicht in Betrieb nehmen, weil es ein zu greoße Konkurrenz für den britischen Harier und die US-Lftfahrtindustrie gewesen wäre! Heute dürfen wir diese deutsche Technik von den USA teuer kaufen. Denn die ist im F-35 und F-22 Retor verbaut. Nach 1990 mußte Deutschland sogar seine gesamte Luft- und Raumfahrt-Industrie an die USA und an Frankreich abgeben.. Dornier wurde an Fairshild verschenkt, und MBB, was Bestandteil der DASA war, wurde in Airbus/EADS einberacht. Was diese EADS heute inj Frankrech baut, sehen wir ja an den Schrott, den die an der Bundeswehr liefern... Bei EADS darf Deutschland heute nur noch bezahlen!

Schade dass es dieses 4:06 "Transport Flugzeug der Zukunft" hier in der Zukunft nicht gibt. Hätten wir doch bestimmt teuer nach Saudi Arabien, libyen, Syrien oder ander Schurkenstaaten verkaufen können.

konnte mich noch sehr gut erinnern, wie dies edle Teil früher im "Vorgarten" des dt. Museums in München stand - sehr sehr lange - dann war´se auf einmal weg - jetzt findet man die DO 31 vor dem Musuem in FH, kam heuer im April zufällig dorten vorbei & knipste ein paar mal zur Erinnerung...-:)

Echt schade um dieses Projekt, wäre ein ziemlich tolles Transportflugzeug gewesen.
Traurig, dass in Deutschland die Ingenieurs Leistungen vorhanden sind, der politische Wille aber fehlt um so etwas auch zu beschaffen.
Wird nur für andere , auf unsere kosten. So spart man sich lästige Entwicklungskosten.
Das Ding ist total ineffektiv. Es hat einen unglaublich hohen Treibstoffverbrauch, geringe Frachtkapazität und sehr hohe Wartungskosten. Es ist weniger der mangelnde politische Wille, sondern viel mehr der wirklich geringe Nutzen des Fliegers. Es gibt bei allen Versuchen, Senkrechtstarter zu bauen nur ein einziges Flugzeug, dass wirklich erfolgreich war, den Harrier. Dieser ist verhältnismäßig langsam, hat auch eine geringe Reichweite und geringe Zuladung. Er ist hilfreich als Unterstützer für amphibische Angriffe.
@@Rubashow Naja, ich gebe dir zwar recht, dass es sehr ineffektiv und nur wenige brauchbare Modelle gibt. Abder den Harrier als einziger ist dann doch untertrieben.
Die F35 können das auch und man sollte die Ospreys nicht vergessen.
@@MrGarzog Die meisten F35 sind nicht in der VTOL Konfiguration und die Ospreys haben eine extrem hohe Unfallrate.
@@IntyMichael Das so wenige F35 VTOL angeschafft liegt vielleicht in dem fehlenden Bedürfniss nach VTOL (ich meine dass die meißten konfigurationen STOL unterstützen) und wenn man sich die UNfallmeldungen der Ospreys anschaut, sind diese selten auf Konstruktions, eher auf Pilotenfehler zurückzuführen und auch nicht so häufig.

Das gesamte Flugprogramm wurde ohne Unfall absolviert. Das ist bemerkenswert, da es bei anderen internationalen Senkrechtstartprojekten zum Teil schwere Unfälle mit Todesfolge gab. Die Do-31 ist auch besser als die Ospray. war damals nicht F.J S Verteidigungsminister ? ;) Vermute Bestechung durch Boeing
Das mit Bestechung kann sehr gut sein, auch gab es denn fall wo die mbb firefly eingestellt wurde, warscheinlich weil die Amerikaner nicht wollten dass die deutschen solch ein Flugzeug haben. Aber bei den VTOL Flugzeugen ist der Grund höchst wahrscheinlich das Ende des kaltenkrieges

Sie behandelt 3 deutsche, sehr ausgereifte Senkrechtstarter. @ Bundeswehr: danke für's hochladen, hoffe ihr habt nicht dagegen, zumindest der Sprecher jener Doku arbeitet ja auch für euch.

The flying prototype (Dornier DO 31 E1) from this video can be seen in the Dornier Museum in Friedrichshafen near lake Constance.
The military decided to use other concepts.

It would have a huge impact in tactical air transport and in aviation. It would have been the only jet transport that could approach to sites where other jet planes and helicopters cannot fly and land safely, whether carrying cargo, in medical evacuation missions and so on.

We invented the Television in the 30, we flew the first jet (HE 178) in 1939, we reached space first in 1944, we invented the automobile and less people in the world like us. That’s german fate.

Amazing plane why this project was discontinued?
It had some minor flaws like the lift engine pods being only dead weight in conventional flight but i guess no one wanted to buy it. To bad for this amazing aircraft.

It's very useful for impaling space emperors.
To all who are wondering why this was cancelled, the answer is a wikipedia search away ;) The entire concept of VTOL aircraft of this type was born out of the fear that West-German airplanes wouldn't be able to operate due to their airfields getting bombed. I don't know why they worried about that so much, since the air defences used at the time made such an event highly unlikely, and in case of an ICBM nuclear strike, it would be all over anyway... On top of that, the thing cost too much, it was inefficient and maintenance-intensive. Just look at the closest thing that actually made it out of the prototype stage, the Navy's V-22 Osprey. It's not even jet powered, yet it's constantly in need of high cost maintenance, the exhaust from its engines can damage the deck of an aircraft carrier, its props can get damaged just by not being used for too long, the project of course went way over budget... Love this kind of stuff, but it's Typical Kraut Space Magic.

Der militärische Nutzen ist ebenso vielfältig wie der im zivilen Bereich, sämtliche Hubschrauber können dadurch ersetzt werden (siehe Probleme der Bergrettungshubschrauber - Steighöhe, Versorgung entlegener Stationen, etc.).

Habt ihr eigentlich auch Archivmaterial über den anderen Senkrechstarter VFW-Fokker VAK 191-B ? Der war ja auch mal für die Bundeswehr in der Entwicklung und war technisch noch viel weiter entwickelt als die DO 31. (Die hatte 1971 sogar schon fly-by-wire ! )

Nein ... wieder wurde alles, trotz solch immenser Kosten, komplett eingestellt und das ganze dann wieder ein Millionengrab zu Lasten aller Bürger ohne irgendein positives Ergebnis.

Lol yeah to get easily shot down. Jet aircraft are a lot more fragile than propeller driven aircraft from ww2 with few exceptions. This subsonic test plane would have got a flak round in one of it's nacelles and flipped over.

Why are we not flying around in large scale passenger versions of these? With 50 or 60 people.
The wingtip pods hold lift engines. Those are just dead weight in conventional flight. The reduced payload and increased fuel consumption means they're not commercially viable.
Lastindependentthinker vertical take-off jets are bloody noisy and they drink fuel faster than Ollie Reed, George Best, etc on a bender after a dry week.

Senkrechtstarter sind sau teuer. Aber guck dir mal den BA-609 an, ein Schwenkrotor flugzeug, und senkrechtstarter, für den Zivil-betrieb.
das do27-video könnte auch nach der hälfte und vor der schlechten animation abgebrochen werden. wo alle (fast) piloten die roten overalls tragen.. und sprechen ist auch ein beruf..

Weshalb wurde er nie in serie produziert?
Nicht alles, was auf den ersten Blick gut aussieht, ist auch wirklich sinnvoll. Ich habe die Maschine in Ludwigshafen selber gesehen, und welch enormer technischer Aufwand nötig ist, um eine relativ geringe Nutzlast so in die Luft zu bekommen.
Das ist aber lange her..... und kommt nie wieder...

Zu aufwendig als Konzept, wenn ich was mit VTOL transportieren will, nehm ich einen Heli. Bereits damals gab es Transporthubschrauber mit doppelt so grosser Nutzlast (MI-6) und bewährter Technik.
Vor der MI-6 gab es die Eisenbahn, die eine hundertfache Nutzlast hatte. Warum also einen aufwändigen Hubschrauber entwickeln, statt auf bewährte Technik (Schiene) zurückzugreifen. Es ist ja nicht so, dass Deutschland gerade deswegen so ein erfolgreicher Industriestaat wurde, weil es neue Wege in der Technik gewagt hat.
@@joemcsilver8098 Kannst ja mal die Amis fragen was die von ihrem Osprey halten. Problemflugzeug ist noch eine harmlose Bezeichnung. Abgesehen vom immensen Wartungsaufwand - Für was genau brauch ich ein VTOL-Transportflugzeug?
Und wenn ich mir die deutschen Rüstungsprojekte der vergangenen Jahre anschaue: "erfolgreicher Industriestaat" und "neue Wege in der Technik" trifft da nur bedingt zu.

Die haben die Briten nicht geklaut sondern für die Do-31 entwickelt.
Gute 40 % der Do-31 wurde von britischen Firmen gebaut. Die Triebwerke kamen beispielsweise von Bristol-Siddeley und wurden später im Harrier verbaut.
