    I don’t know WHAT they were thinking spending all that time modelling such a strange, innovative and quirky aircraft. What we punters REALLY want is yet another A320, identical to the other 8 A320s on offer except for a slightly weathered flight deck!
    ITBS though has missed a trick here as this aircraft more than any other deserved an introduction to the Thunderbirds theme. That would have absolutely set the review off perfectly.
    Great review though, thank you! I’ll be getting this simply for the novelty value!

    • @JacksonTyler

      Haha! Not to worry Andy, I gather we’re expecting another A320, any day now! : P
      You’re 100% correct; whilst it did occur to me that the Do31 could easily be Thunderbird 6, I rather missed a trick by not including the music XD
      I’m glad you otherwise enjoyed the video though and I do hope you had some fun with the Dornier also. “Thunderbirds are go!”

    Hello sir! Great video as always.
    I have a funny story about this airplane. When I lived in Southern Oregon, I met the test pilot Dornier hired to fly this beast.
    His name was Drury Wood and he was from the golden age of American test pilots, WW2 Navy vet flying corsairs then post war civilian test pilot.
    We hit it off as I am a long time aviation guy and chatting further it was evident he was very proud of working for Dornier on this project. I believe he flew it at the Paris and Farnborough air shows around 1969 1970 ish
    He was in his late 80s when I met him and one day he showed at my work and gave me a bunch of photos and a video dvd all taken during the project.
    After seeing this AC for the sim I need to dig them out of storage and have a look again at them
    Small , small world

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Місяць тому +1

      Haha well, that’s very cool indeed, Andy!
      I did a little reading ahead of this review and was surprised to find out that it was an American test pilot, flying on behalf of Dornier (amazing how much can change in just a few short years!). Amazing that you got a chance to talk with him and share some of his stories etc.
      I’m glad you enjoyed the video however, much cooler hearing stories from the guy that actually flew it haha!
      Many thanks and all the best : )

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations funny additional story: after meeting him, I asked Mr Wood what got him started loving aviation and he told me in late 1920s early 1930s Georgia, where he grew up, the local airfield had an aviation day and his dad bought him a ride on a Ford Trimotor. He was hooked !

      Haha! That might be the most apt description yet, Roland. For such a unique looking aircraft, it’s amazing how it somehow manages to look like so many other things at the same time. . . XD
      I did wonder about an engine-out scenario; presumably, one of the reasons there are 4 engines on each side, it to offer a little bit of redundancy however, I don’t think it would be hard for one engine to take out the others around it. It then occurred to me, what a precarious position a Harrier pilot is in during the hover although, at least he can punch out - not a luxury afforded to those down the back of a DO31 : /
      I’m 100% with you; by and large, Asobo has played a blinder with their “Local Legends” / “Famous Flyer” series : )

    OH GAWD DARNIT, I promised myself to not get any new aircraft this month!!! Then they go and bring out this amazingly odd and wild machine. That nicely done an most likely very accurate flight deck is likely due to the fact the actual machine still exists. They do need to soften up that landing gear as there appeared no compression at all. The visual model though is really well done. • @SACR3DBAC0N
    @SACR3DBAC0N 2 місяці тому

    The aircraft probably pitches during the transition from vertical to horizontal flight because of the vectoring nozzles on the main engines. Obviously, it depends on the relationship between center of thrust (CoT) and center of gravity (CG), but generally speaking almost any tilt-jet is going to have this tendecy. Basically, any angle between vertical and horizontal on the thrust vectoring is going to cause some sort of pitching moment because of a misallignment between the CoT and CG vectors that ideally? should be mitigated with thrust differential and PID control if possible. Not sure if the Do 31 has this complete ability. As for the rolling right tendency I have no idea. Anyways cool demonstration video!

    I may be wrong but i do not think the vertical engines are modelled in the sim. The nose wheel should not lift. The elevators are responsible for nose wheel lift when the air flow is sufficient.
    my guess is that the aircraft has a heavy headwind modelled into it or its treated as a 10kg aircraft meaning the forward speed you see on heavy brakes is sufficient to lift it into the air.
    Try takeoff with the B747 with a 160kt headwind.

      Actually, it pitches down (which I could maaaybe understand) and rolls to the right, when main engine thrust is added in / to exit the hover. I can’t really think why that would be (unless it’s some hangover from iniBuilds using a helicopter flight model, perhaps?). . . Any ideas, sir? : )

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 місяці тому +1

      Hi Streaky,
      I assume that noise is supposed to emulate the avionics fans (or something to that effect). Quite a nice sound effect although, rather loud, as you say. Aircraft fans can be pretty noisy but, they aren't generally louder than a Rolls Royce Pegasus at full chat (which seemed to be the case here) XD
      All the best! : )

    • @Streaky100001
      @Streaky100001 2 місяці тому +1

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations Yeah, I did wonder if it was the avionics, and maybe gyros spinning up, but seemed too loud for that. After having watched the rest though, I wonder if it's the vertical lift engines we're hearing? You mentioned when you went to start them that the throttle for them was already in start, and they were already spinning? I wonder if that throttle is meant to be out of the start position before you put the batteries on?

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Місяць тому

      It could well be that also. I had my (3rd) throttle axis all the way back and that seems to be as far back as the lift engine levers will go. That being said, the lift engines do seem to immediately spool up to some degree, as you say. I did wonder whether that’s by design (perhaps they are always partially spooled, to allow for a quick start-up etc) but, to be frank, I have no idea haha.
      Sorry I can’t be of more help on that one. All the best!

      I can see where you’re coming from João however, the development of the DO31 was contracted out to iniBuilds so, I don’t think the addon cost anything in terms of MSFS’ development. A truly wonderful aircraft that just doesn’t cut it. Inibuilds ego is too unhealthy, and falsely resembles authenticity through their undercooked work.

      That’s fair, Zaelu. I find the DO31 to be fun for what it is and to be fair to iniBuilds, they probably just built what they were contracted to make (Asobo probably wasn’t looking for a “study level” rendition of the aircraft). That being said, I have been somewhat surprised by the quality of iniBuilds’ products within MSFS, given their reputation in X-Plane; other than their A310 / A300 (which are still not without fault), I’ve found most of their offerings in MSFS to be a little mediocre thus far. . .
