    P.S. Casual users, 256GB might just be enough for you honestly. The cool thing is that no matter what, you have the alternative to go get yourself some more storage. (& Avoid voiding your warranty)

      It should definitely be enough (as long as you get an external drive)! I’m still editing videos on my base model M1 MacBook Air. I eventually want a M4 Pro but you are tempting me to get this thing instead and save the money.
      Hopefully my other comments didn’t post cause it was loading and they just say the same thing😅

    people in youtube videos saying "mac mini base model isnt really for heavy tasks like editing just simple browsing emails..." brother i edit in a 200 dollar laptop 8gb ram, intel i3, cant even handle a messaging app open plus a yt video playing. My point is yea the mac mini might not be the best to edit on but for the price its amazing even if you arent getting a pro experience

      I have a MacBook Air M1 and I regret it. Got freezes for a second every day in the browser or finder. That’s weird 1000$ laptop has that. I will never buy MacOS device. I also plan switch to Windows and get Pixel. I watch this brand through years and they all the time make scam products with low value. 256GB is a circus for base products where cheap laptops have 512GB. Generally I don’t care about pendrive or disks, I want my things inside the MacMini hard drive. Next year they’ll add 16 gigs to MacBook Airs.. revolution.

      @damianwojcikiewicz3623 Thats not normal in a mac, theres something wrong with, go get it fixed if its still under warranty. Plus, the macbook airs already have 16gb of ram... and i understand 256gb is dumb for this computer, but youre still getting a good value

    Hi! In DaVinci Resolve, it's possible to set up path mapping between Mac and PC. Just last week, I configured it on our work computers, and everything works perfectly. You can do this in the Preferences > Media Storage > Mapped Mounts menu. On the PC, you set the Mac path (e.g., /Volumes/Project_Files, and on the Mac, you specify the PC path (D:\Project_Files).

      Andres, hi! I want to share another recommendation regarding setting up DaVinci for working on a project across multiple PCs. Maybe you already know this, or maybe not. If you set the Working Folders (proxy, cache, gallery) on a server instead of locally, settings like Magic Mask should be preserved when opening the project on different computers.

    I would recommend 24 GB ram for any semi-professional user. For example if you are a software developer and you want to run virtualization or heavy docker usage and have allot of multitasking going on with lots of tabs open and applications open at the same time. Otherwise 16 GB will be enough. I went for 512 GB ssd option and not 256 GB as many recommend. Whatever options you choose it will be a good value I believe. This configuration that I choose was about 100 euros cheaper then my previous computer I bought about 5 years ago and had 16 GB ram and 256 ssd storage. So I feel I got more for my money this time around with the Apple Mac mini M4.
    The small computer variants with windows are not much cheaper these days unfortunately.

      Boot off that external 2TB drive and you'll be able to use the entire thing for virtual memory! You won't run into any hard memory limits while abusing the poor thing like OP did :)

  • @chuckaeronut
    @chuckaeronut День тому +1

    I would recommend booting your entire macOS off your external storage. It's slightly faster, but importantly, it's much bigger, and as macOS will only swap to the startup volume, you'll have massively more free space to use as virtual memory to be able to abuse the machine as you have been. I'm quite convinced that you won't have any hard limits to what you can get away with RAM-wise while running like this. Obviously it's not as fast as real RAM, but it should get the job done. I'm considering booting my M4 mini off of a RAID0 of two external NVMe drives each on their own USB4/TB4 bus, which should make swap performance excellent.

    • @jazzaugustin7479
      @jazzaugustin7479 9 годин тому

      does this mean you want to use the 256gb as ram?

    • @chuckaeronut
      @chuckaeronut 6 годин тому

      @@jazzaugustin7479 OP's problem is that he filled up his small 256 GB boot drive so it had very little free space left, and then maxed out his RAM and forced his mini to use that tiny bit of free space as virtual memory. It wasn't enough! If he had booted off of the larger external storage, it would have a lot more free space, allowing him to get away with his abusive usage with only some performance costs instead of any failures. Thing is, macOS can only use the startup volume for virtual memory (swap space), so the more, the merrier. It's stuck using whatever you booted from as a substitute for extra RAM, so no, the 256 GB internal SSD would be pretty useless, while everything happens off the external.

    Much respect to you @andresvidosa this was a superb video. As a programmer myself I very much appreciate reviewing the m4 mini with software engineering in mind instead of video editing and photography. I am sick to death of watching reviews that talk about how efficient Final Cut Pro is and video export times are and timeline scrubbing. I don’t care about this. I do care however about the performance of docker containers, LLMs, VMs and other developer tools presented in your video. This is the first video I’ve seen so far with this perspective. The rest of it to me is irrelevant noise that is not worth sitting through.

    Today, I got a Mac Mini M4, but I went for the version with 24GB RAM, and I don’t think I made a mistake. The truth is, I was initially planning to get the base model, but after watching your video, I decided to spend a bit more on the RAM.

  • @prodigiart
    @prodigiart 2 дні тому

    Man, the M4 Mac Mini is such an attractive value proposition, but there are some hard realities about the compromises with the base model. Your video does a great job highlighting the limitations of the puny 256GB SSD, even with the seemingly straightforward external workaround. It also shows how the 16GB RAM configuration is much more susceptible to memory pressure, especially as more Apple Intelligence features make their way into macOS.
    That said, I’d love to see you do a video pushing the base model Mac Mini Pro to its limits. There aren’t nearly as many videos on the Mac Mini Pro, and the base model offers a very compelling price point for those looking for a smoother, more capable future-proof system without jumping to the M4 Max level.

    Nice vid. As cool as I think the Minis are... I can't shake that I just prefer self-built PCs for desktops lol. It's held up for me for like a decade plus - MacBook Pro + gaming PC is just the ultimate combo, letting each platform do what it does best.
    As for benchmarks... personally, I think good, well-established, well-documented benchmarks (ie. Geekbench) have their place. They aren't meaningless at all, but, I also think one shouldn't over-interpret the results either. The real-world tests are where you actually add value as a tech reviewer.

    Wow, this is impressive! Watching this without relying on benchmarks and firsthand experience with the base model really helps us as consumers decide which configuration to choose. The M4 Mac Mini base model is truly a tiny powerhouse. It’s great to see this kind of stress test instead of just benchmarks. I’m considering the 24GB RAM with 512GB SSD option for a tighter budget. For users with heavy workloads, the M4 Pro might be the better choice.

    I think Sequoia has an option to auto-install each app that takes more than 1 GB to the external drive. Also, just moving an app folder to another drive may (or may not) cause system integrity issues like broken links and dependencies, permissions issues, loss of data, or update and upgrade errors.

    I think 512GB should be standard in 2024.
    256GB is the Base for Smartphones nowadays.
    It is the shilling in these small things that draws so much ire and hate against Apple.
    I mean, just imagine if the Mac Mini came with 512GB Base.
    There would've been literally nothing for people to complain about or make a mockery of Apple.
    Even 'Casual Users' fill up 256GB quickly. You need space for Docs, Photos, Videos [especially if they Sync with iPhones], & Apps, and BOOM.
    Suddenly you're full.

      still its not acceptable, apple should make the storage upgradable in the first place. We all know what kind of game apple is playing.🤷‍♂️

      256gb wasn’t enough even 12 years ago when I had a 256gb SSD. Since then I always at minimum get 512gb for my pc’s. So when ordering the Mac mini the idea of getting 256gb was nauseating.
      What sealed the deal was hearing the speeds of the 512gb was faster. So I upgraded to the 512gb drive. The reality is that the 256gb drive is really two gimped 128gb drives.

    I dont understand people complaining about 256GB, yes in 2024 it should be more but for many people is just enought. I have been using 256GB for years and still have around 90GB free! People that love to collect files just Order more SSD of use an external Drive. And that thing about normalizing Not powering off the Computer is just the worst Habit one can have. Imagine Millions o people worldwide setting the Mac to sleep, they all still consume a tiny Portion of Energy but multiples my millions is just insane 👎🏻

    I have the base macbook pro storage, its enough if you are aware of DR eating your storage with render/cache. If you edit multiple videos at a time it might be an issue but if your editing one project at a time and clear your cache its not a problem.

    I cannot understand why every US/Canada guy say that if you need additional or more storage you can go on this way like you.
    For EU people is just - NO. Here everything is way more expensive like in euros and more taxes.
    So finally Apple should upgrade their politics starting with at least 1TB/2TB storage if not to give you an opportunity to put whatever you like inside.
    I will set Samsung 990 PRO 4TB right now without second thoughts.
    This is one of the weakest spots and every reasonable guy know it.
    I am looking to get Mac Studio with M4 when arrived. That will more reasonable buying.

Also another base M4 Pro Mac Mini is on its way, not sure if it worth for 4k video editiing(more for action camera, 360, Drone footage etc) as a hobby but nothing professional. Oh I have that same ugreen nvme ssd enclosure, its beautifully made and rock solid in data trasnfering but that fan noise really annoys me(not the volumn but the whining pitch).

    If I am a student and also a developer on the side (especially software et blockchain development) and I might start video editing for UA-cam in the near future. Should I get the 16gb of ram Mac mini or 24gb ?

    • @impurgal9544
      @impurgal9544 4 дні тому

      Hello, For your activities in software and blockchain development, as well as video editing for UA-cam, the Mac mini with 16 GB of RAM should perfectly meet your needs. This amount of RAM provides smooth performance for managing modern development environments and common video editing software, while allowing you to multitask effectively. Additionally, opting for 16 GB lets you save money without compromising the quality of your work, unless you plan to work on particularly demanding or very high-resolution projects. Therefore, choosing the 24 GB of RAM is not necessary at this time.

    • @impurgal9544
      @impurgal9544 4 дні тому

      However, a Windows PC might better suit your needs by offering more powerful components for the same price and greater customization options. It provides better upgradeability and supports a wide range of software and hardware, enhancing both your development and video editing workflows. This flexibility can offer better value and adaptability for your projects.

      I’d get 24gb. A few days ago I was just using my web browser and that took up almost 12 GB of memory (!) then I decided to test running a photo editing program and open a few other things just to see what would happen and then I found myself swapping at 3gb. This obviously is not ideal if you value the long-term health of your hard drive as SSD’s have a limited lifetime.

    Man, I love the new form factor. If only I had waited last year on it 😭
    That UGREEN enclosure works great between Mac and PC btw. I popped in a Lexar NM750 for my enclosure and no hiccups between gaming and graphic design on it.
